Guys,

I am considering getting a Leupold VX-3 CDS scope for my .243 I use for coyote hunting. Does the scope function as advertised as along as you provide all the correct info? Thanks.

The CDS is a very nice feature to have. We have gotten very good feedback on the CDS.

If we can be of help feel free to let me know.

Yes it's a great feature. I've used the standard .25MOA it comes with and it works well. I had one made for my pet load, but have not installed it yet. Going to buy another real soon, should have $200ish into it,when I cash in my discounts.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It seems to be a great system. I am going to get a turret for my pet load, as well. It will be nice to be able to dial in on those coyotes that occassionally hang up out there a ways.

I have used one on a 7mm Rem Mag for the past two seasons with great success. Make sure you send good data to Leupold and you will be happy with the results. I shoot a lot and after all of that practice, I can now dial out to 760 yards and be spot on.

I couldn't be more happy with this system for the price.

RyanD,

Thanks for the feedback. That sounds great. My biggest thing is trying to decide what barometric pressure and temperature to submit. I will pretty much be hunting in the winter, but the temps can still fluctuate quite a bit, as you know. The same would be true with the barometric pressure. What did you go with for our state? I know these things make a difference, but maybe aren't a huge factor. What's your thoughts?

Hey Tim,

Their website says you get one free custom dial. That would be great to get another one. Could sure always buy extras to cover different weather conditions, but like to get one to cover fairly closely the most common conditions I hunt in.

Mark,

I cannot remember the exact figures I sent in and I do not remember them asking for barometric pressure, but I could be wrong. I remember sending temperature, humidity, altitude, bullet information and muzzle velocities. I used an average of 20 shots over the chronograph on a 30 degree day.

I can look when I get home and post the exact values if it would be useful for you. I do however remember my reasoning for choosing the values I sent in.

Since the gun I was putting the CDS system on is primarily a deer gun, I searched the web for the historical average temp and humidity for the months of November and December in South Dakota. I used an average of those numbers for data and it seems to work just fine for me.

Mark,

You maybe diff, but I prefer AO scopes on anything over 10x. I'm sure Leupold kept away form AO to keep the cost down, however I've read plenty of people wished and would buy one in 14x if AO. May not be a big deal to you. On that note 4.5-14x40 is my fav power range.

Good info Ryan.
I set mine up much the same way. I split the diff on the temps I will be running.

Mark you need......
cal/chambering.. bullet brand/make ... grain & B.C...FPS...Alt/elevation....Temp.. what zero you want 100/200 etc

Mine reads **.223 RemAI 62TSX 3284fps 30F 100yards 1/4MOA **

Ryan and Tim,

Thanks so much for the info.

Ryan, that is what I was going to try and do too. If you have the numbers you used, that would be a great starting point for me.

Tim, that is a good point on the 4.5-14. Now you got me thinking.

Tim,

I just sent Leupold an email inquiring about why they didn't offer the CDS model with an AO. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. The extra magnification sure would be nice on those longer shots, especially on coyote size game. The 10X would certainly be enough, though. Are you using your set-up for coyotes?

Mark,
Most of the action my CDS 10x on a .223AI has seen was Tx last winter.
Yotes, cats, and hogs at night with shots on yotes out to 300 ish,no problems.

BTW, I did buy the 4.5-14 too...I generally buy AO scopes as well, but I do not miss the AO at all and have seen no issues shooting long range without it. I did have my zero set at 200 yards as well.

Mine reads: 7mm Mag 168BRGR VLD 2880FPS 1000ft 40F 100yds 1/4 MOA

In looking at it, I was actually surprised that 40 degrees is what I used, but that must have been what I calculated as the average temp over the months I mentioned. I do not remember what I used for humidity, but I know if you search for it, it is easily found online.

I have not seen any major differences when shooting in temps colder than what I have mine calibrated for, but I am not shooting for groups either. I have shot steel at 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 yards, all of which take 1 shot to hit the steel with no wind. The 300-500 steel plates are 5.5 inch plates and the 600-700 yd plates are 10 inches.

Mine is mounted on a 7mm Rem Mag CDL Boone and Crocket. I have bedded the action, floated the barrel and added a timney trigger to the rifle...all of which has helped with the accuracy for me.

Thanks, Ryan. Nice shooting on the steel targets. I do have a question on setting your zero. If you decide to go with a 200 yard zero, can you dial your turret down to 100 yards for any reason or does it start at 200 yards and go up from there? I hope that makes sense. Thanks for all the help.
