Just a little FYI I have the 4.5x14 40mm CDS and love it's will be buying more. The max parallax error at 500 yes is 1.8 inch moving you eye from edge to edge not enough to worry about having AO.

Tim, thanks for your input. I will probably go with the 100 yard zero.
1100 Rem Man, thanks for your input as well. I really appreciate it.
I HAD the 4.5-14x40 CDS in VX3 with no AO. Above 10 power the image was poor and the coloring was off. I never sent it in to have the CDS dial matched to a load as I mounted it on 3 different rifles to see if I could get used to it. It did however track just right when using "come ups". Well, back to Cabelas it went and I got the 3.5-10x40 instead. I have yet to use that in CDS on tip my 7RM but I do have a straight Duplex 3.5-10x40 VX3 I like very much. I'll stick to AO only scopes when buying leupold at 14 power.
I cannot dial back down from 200 yards to 100 yards, but I am not sure why I would ever want to with my setup. Every other non-dial scope I have I sight in around 1.5 inches high at 100 yards anyway.
I used the 200 yard zero so that I could get more range out of the dial in a single turn of the turret, which is all you get with the zero stop installed.
I use the 200yds zero on a .223 Rem with my 4.5x14 40mm CDS all I plan on doing with mine is send it back in after hunting season ans have M2 Dial put on my windage Dial. then it will perfect. Just FYI with a 40gr Nosler BT at 3725 FPS im only .9 inches high at 100 yds with a 200 yds zero. Worked great on Praire Dogs Since most shots with it were from 150 to 350 yds. I also felt it was a good value for the money. I do find it funny the VX-3 line of scopes now come with dual springs just like my 30yr plus old Weaver Micro Track. Which was a very good scope for the day.
I have a 4.5 X 14 CDS on my 280 AI and shoot a 168 berger at 2700 and I can dail to 650 yards. I have only shoot to 550 on a 10X10 gong, if I do my part it will rig until I tired of shooting.. Love the glass, you can tell a big difference between a VX2 and the VX3. IM saving my pennies for another one for a walking yote getter.
So I'm interested in a Leupold 4.5-14x40 mm scope. My questions is there any big issues with parallax at 500 yards. I plan to put a CDS turret on it for my 243 win.
Good to know that everyone gives the CDS system high marks.
Another option would be to have Leupold install an M1 elevation turret. You could just chart/field verify your drops instead of sending info to Leupold for custom dials everytime you change loads.

I have he 4.5-14x50 on my .308 and it is sensitive to eye position and will black out.

I've got a 4.5-14x50 VX3 Long Range, 30mm tube. Has side focus. Was on my 7mag Sendero, sold it. Now on R-15 for now. Overkill I know, but at least it's enough scope. It's EXCEPTIONALLY clear on 14x. Killed lots prairie dogs out to 485 with it. Very clear. Has side focus. REALLY heavy scope though. Way too heavy for any hunting rig imo. Very top heavy on AR. Want to put a Kenton CDS on it. Got one on VX2 4-12X50. Now that scope ain't clear. Very fuzzy at the edges. Eyepiece is loose. World diff. b/w VX2 and VX3. No contest. However, VX2 has Kenton CDS, on Rem 700VS in .22-250. Marked to 700 yds with 100yd zero. Unbeatable even with fuzzy scope. Dials very dependably. Gonna rig up a VX3 4.5-14x40 with one for my go to all around hunting rig. Lot lighter set up. Leupolds work VERY well with a CDS. Mine always return to zero.

I just last week talked to a Leupold rep about installing an M1 turret on one of my VX3's and was told they can only be installed on the M4 line.

Hmmm....
Unless they changed recently, you can get them on the "3" series. Atleast on the older ones. I've seen plenty do it.
The turret mounts on the CDS series is different.
When they first came out, I asked if I could get a CDS put on a 4.5-14x40 AO, cuz I wanted one with AO - Leupold said it was not compatible and the cost of the installation would be prohibitive. The now make an out of the box AO 4.5-14x40 CDS

I don't know, but I think they will go on the VX3s... it's the turrets on the CDS models that is different from the other scopes. Probably smart to call Leupold to make sure before you spend money.

That's what I thought too. Mine's an older VX-III non AO 4.5-14.
I really don't need the CDS. Just wanted a low profile elevation turret for the little 222 Rock Chuck getter I recently put together.
Don't know if the VX "III" is different than the VX "3" but the tech I spoke to specifically said the M1 turret could only be put on the M4's.
I'm gonna call back and talk to em again. Maybe I got a new tech in training. Hope so cause I really don't want the CDS or one of Leupolds Ginormous turrets.
In April I sent a brand new Leupold "VX3" (not Vari-X or VX-III) to Leupold and they installed a M1 elevation turret on for me with no problems. It's currently mounted on my new .280AI and ready and waiting for a test drive.
Edit: The VX3 I sent in is a 3.5-10x40, standard duplex with capped (covered) standard 1/4" @ 100 yard dials.
The CDS dial is low profile, that's why I wanted it installed on my new VX-3 4.5-14 AO. It was $90. They replaced the entire elevation erector gear assembly or whatever it's called, it's not simply a turret cap swap out. My turret is marked standard 1/4", not interested in custom ballistic engravings on my dial in case I change loads or rifles.
