I put this together for next years deer season, since Ohio allowed the use of some straight walled cartridges, and since I already have a couple 45-70's I wanted something a little different, so I picked up a Marlin 336Y 30-30 with its shorter stock and 16" barrel I thought it would make a nice compact rifle for hunting in the thick stuff.
I sent it off to JES re boring and had it re bored and chambered in 38-55/375 it has a .376 groove diameter and will chamber 375 win and the shorter 38-55 brass.
This is the first re bored barrel I have had, but I have read quite a few positive reviews of Jesse Ocumpaugh's work and indeed the price and turn around time probably can't be beat.
Hopefully I'll get to shoot it in the next week or two.

Keep us informed on the loading and shooting.
I did one of those several years ago in .38-55 on an old 336 I inherited.
Kinda embarrassed to say I've never even loaded up any ammo for it.

Your my kind of guy. Your going to love it. I have a factory Savage 99 in 375 Win and it is a tack driver. Mine is sçoped like yours also. My only regret is that Win. dropped the 250gr loading. I also shoot the 375 Win's Euro brother, the 9.3x72R.
 
That's a good looking rifle. Have you thought about a Wild West Guns conversion for a 45-70? It's called 457WWG and fires a 350 grain bullet 2300fps. You can still use 45-70 rounds in it plus .410 2.5" shot shells.
 
the 457 WWG doesnt appear to fall on the list of approved calibers for ohio - it looks like they have a very caliber specific law.

here in michigan - the law is based of a minimum bullet diameter (.35 caliber or larger) and a min/max case length (1.160-1.800") - so the 45-70 and the 457 WWG are too long for us as well in the restricted zone anyway.

What's the price of his rebore look like compared to cutting a custom barrel from a blank? I've never done a rebore on a levergun, only rebarrels. Ain't cheap the way I did it, but manageable.
 
To rebore and rechamber it was $225 for 3 groove and $250 for 4 or 5 groove and two weeks turn around time.
I had a win 94 re barrelled in 38-55 with a 28" octagonal barrel from Badger by one of the so called top BPCR Smith's and it cost easily 3 times that much about 15 years ago
 
Seems like a fair price for a rebore. Besides keeping all the original finish etc...

I'd like to have a lever gun of some kind. Always thought a 410 lever would be fun.
 
IMHO, you've succeeded in destroying a very nice collectable rifle It's your rifle so, be happy with your new toy. Hope you realize Marlin is no more.
Why in the world didn't you just buy a junk 336 and cut it down?

I'm very happy with my new toy, I also realize Marlin doesn't build firearms like they used to, I have more than a few nice JM stamped Marlins in my safe,
If you don't like or agree with my post just move on no need to comment about something you have no clue about,BTW this is a Remlin not a JM stamped Marlin

That made me chuckle a little. I have a Winchester Big Bore 94 XTR in 375 Win and love it. I have only killed a couple of deer with it, and it worked very well.

Yeah the exhibition grade beech hardwood stock and plastic barrel bands really set it off.
How much do you think I could have got from a Remlin collector if it wasn't destroyed.

I can't wait to try it out this coming season I have a couple 45/70's that I have taken a few with, they definitely get it done but this one is just a bit lighter and more compact
 
I'd have done the same thing if I was a mood for something different Rich....
Matter of fact.....you now have the only Remlin on the entire planet that holds any interest to me what so ever....
Cutting up an old beat up 336 would have been the real travesty.....
 
.38-55 is something I have wanted for quite awhile. Really a pain as far as old/new and bore sizes go. I will have to look for a newer Remlin to convert.
