Long range shooting

First to the OP, Sorry for the different rabbit trails we have been going down in this thread.
If you would like, I can start a new one.
If you're good with dealing with long-range in general we're good with that too.

I have been slapping steel (and p-dogs) at long range for many years. My experience has taught me that gear can be bought, matching rifle to ammo is not too difficult, but experience has to be earned.

FWIW, coming up with the proper (repeatable and reliable) dope is the toughest part of all. After you have the techniques nailed, the real key to success is developing a deep rooted understanding of the environmental variables and how to develop a firing solution for those variables. Pulling the trigger becomes the easy part. Master the basics first out to 1000 yds, then worry about the little things, like spin drift.

FWIW, I have my own 1500 yard range and my own steel targets in sizes from 6 inch circles to full size USPSA metric targets. Shifting winds and mirage are the long range shooter's nemisis.

I got a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 300 Win Mag. If I dominate with those, I may get something else to go out further.

Sounds like you are in LR heaven

What are your twist rates on the 300 Win Mag and the 6.5 Creedmoor? What bullets are you using? What are your average velocities and group sizes for each?

6.5 Creedmoor is 1:8 twist shooting 140 Berger VLD at around 2800 fps. Shoots 3/4 or better. I'm gonna work on loads a little more.
300 Win Mag I don't know the twist. It's a late 70s Rem 700 that I picked up on auction. The previous owner only shot half a box of ammo through it for a single elk hunt and then never shot it again. I load up 210 gr Berger VLDs and it shoots lights out. I haven't had this gun long enough and still havta chrony it and still on load development.

You two rifles chambered in rounds that should cover lots of long range situations.

I will concur with others who say find someone who is more experienced and proficient than you and let them help you

Good luck and welcome to the madness of long range

If your 300 Win Mag is still wearing the original factory barrel then the twist is going to be 1 in 10". That twist will properly stabilize the Berger 215gr and 230gr Hybrids under most conditions out past 2,000 meters. You may give up a little BC, but it wouldn't be much. Once you chronograph and verify your loads you'll be in business!

If you haven't already, do check out the Sniper 101 video series by TiborasaurusRex on YouTube. You'll be amazed at what you learn from it. The guy is nearly a rocket scientist and not only can he talk the talk, but he can definitely walk the walk! He explains many complex issues in simple to comprehend terms. With around 96 videos in the series (and still growing) it is quite an investment of time, but I assure you that it is worth it!

Now that I got a lot of good shooters watching this thread. What do you guys all log into your rifle notes each time you go out. I know this is a very crucial step to accurate shooting. Temp, Wind, Distance, .....?

I use the Storm Tactical 6 ring binder
I also bought some card stock and used Excel to make my own cards

If you don't already have, you will need an accurate RF and some sort of firing solution calculator (phone app or Kestrel)

Yes I use a couple different shooting apps and I use a Leica 1600B. I'll look at the Tactical 6 log book. I've just been keeping my targets and write down few weather conditions and couple other things. I guess I'm not even close to being ready for this long range stuff.. Lol. Thank you much!

you can prepare all you want, buy the latest gagets and gizmos, and still not be ready. At some point you just have to jump in and see what works for you. You will quickly realize what you need / don't need. All you can do is practice, correct issues and keep learning. Its an addicting hobby, so your in for it.
