Longest Coyote Shot With Shotgun

I try to keep my shots under 50yds, but I have shot a few a little past that. My gun patterns 3.5 #4 buck pretty well out to 60yds. I have knocked down 2 wounded coyotes at around 70+yds with that load. I have 3 clean 1 shot kills at 60yds, and 1 that took 3 rounds to go down. I think shotguns are best at 50yds or less. I hate to lose a wounded coyote!

It's true - he shot down into a canyon at about 65 yards away and nailed a little grey fox. It was that hunting trip that concreted my decision to switch from 3" BB to 3" #4 buck.

I have made shots consistantly out to 60 yards with my 26" barrel, Rem Full choke and 3" #4 buck. I have at times needed a finishing shot at animals beyond 50 yards when they didn't get a good full load of shot. A couple weeks ago I missed a fox at 70 yards with my shotty, so I know that's well beyond the capable range of my setup. I have tried a lot of different loads, but I would say that #4 buck is the best way to go unless you have the $$ for Dead Coyote.

ONE BILLION YARDS!!! LOL

My longest is about 40-yards and I don't think I'd take any shot passed that...unless I'm wearing my running shoes!

Any coyote hunter who has ever used a long barreled smoothbore full choke shotgun. Knows of their far reach & inherent tight patterns. A shotgunner that wants to reach out past [screw choked] shotguns. Doesn't know what they are missing.

I used buffered Buckshot. As the buffering assists the large buckshot, from crowding/deformation near the muzzle end/narrowing of the barrel. Thus, a tight group way out there.

Furthermore, that 100-110yrd coyote was the longest I ever shot & made a kill. Most of my shotgunned coyotes were around 60yrds give or take. I have made some 70-90yrd kills as well. Not 1-shot shot kills, but multiple shot kills.

Here is the 50 lb, 100-110yrd coyote. Winter of 81. I stalked this coyote which was laying in a draw. Coyote heard me in the area, he sat up & started to look around. Coyote was broadside[left side facing] from me. I aimed roughly 1-foot high & shot. Coyote ended up in the middle of my pattern.

When I shot, I seen his fur come alive with mutiple hits. Coyote jumped high in the air. Coyote came down on all fours. Then he sat right down, howling. Coyote got up & turned facing away. I sent a 3" mag #3 Buck into his rump. Coyote sat back down, howling. Coyote got up again, turned 90 degrees, walking slowly. His right side facing to me. 3rd shot #3 Buck, hit him on his right side. He stopped cold, his body wavered. Then he fell over like a ship anchor. Stone dead.

I've seen a bunch of yotes dumped in the 50-60 yard range with Winchester SuperX 3" #4 buck, and one at around 90 although that one ran about 80 yards before dying. Longest I've witnessed was 100 yards (give or take) with lead BB's out of a 10ga, which also ran a long way before dropping. Both of the long shot yotes were surrounded by other guns on their escape paths or they probably wouldnt have been tried (I didnt shoot either). I like to stay around 50 or under with room for a back up if needed (which usually is).

Hey Kirby. The hold would be just about dead on for the pattern strike. #3 buck if it left your muzzle at 1500 fps would be doing about 700 FPS at 100 yards. At 25 grains per pellet the FP of energy would be approximately 30, about half the energy of a 22 short, 70 ft lbs at the muzzle and much nearer the 22 CB round ball at about 22 ft lbs. It has taken me at point blank range 2 or 3 shots in the head to kill a darn possum with CB's.

Your loads must put all 27 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 50 yards and all in a 20 inch circle at 100. That is some great ammo and just a super shotgun. Gotta give you kudos.

As to GC, he has provided us with some darn good info on shotguns and patterns. I thank him for that. I could not figure out why killing coyotes when someone else was a kid had any relevance to the thread. That is just me though.

Yes I agree, his thread is very informative & valuable to shotgunners. But it is NOT ALL inclusive. As to the truth of shotguns & or killing coyotes.

BTW, borrow a smoothbore long barrel full choke shotgun. Then set-up a 1/4" or 1/2" piece of plywood out to say 70-80yrds, or even a 100yrds. Then shoot that plywood with #3 & #4 lead Buckshot. It will become apparent of their down-range energy.

I got a 30 inch full 1100 I'll give it a shot. Only got #4 buck though because I don't reload shot-shells. The #4 buck will have even less foot pounds of energy but I'll give it a go.

65 yards DRT with 3 1/2 inch Rem Wingmaster T shot 30 in Extra full turkey choke. This coyote bled form every area of his body, had a broken jaw, and two pellets completely through his skull.

I like the way the Remington shells pattern more than Dead Coyote. After patterning and shooting through 3/4 in hardboard, I will not hesitate to shoot a coyote inside of 70 yards with this load.

The new heavier than lead loads with a extra full choke tubes are deadly. At 70 yards I will score more than 18 pellets in a coyote silhouette. If you are skeptical go buy a box and try it. They will shred 3/4 in plywood at 70 yards!

I like T shot, better then any of the buck shot myself because I like the idea of a lot of shot hitting the coyote. I think past 70 yards they become less lethal very quickly.

To shoot out to 65+ yards I think you need to do the work of patterning your own gun and try different choke tubes. Different brands of tubes yielded very different results for me.

I respect GC and Kirby but you have to find what works for you.

What is some of the velocities on your 3" or 3 1/2" shells you guys use on coyotes? I have heard so much mixed results about dead coyote rounds on these forums on predator masters.

howling: the 3" #4 buck I prefer is either the copper plated Federal or the Remington, both of which are pushing about 1100 fps. The T shot Dead Coyote round is fantastic, but at $3 a round, compared to what I shoot at $1 a round, I'll pass on the Dead Coyote.

I was asking about velocity because I use to use 3" but I always got better performance out of a 2 3/4 inch shells the ammo I always go back to has been Law Enforcement ammo called Nobel Sport it is #4buck 27 pellets, plastic wad and velocity is 1325fps and it goes through both sides at 50 yards because I have done it over and over again. This ammo is $8.99 a box a lot cheaper and coyotes are as dead as they can get...lol. I had 1 shot kills out to 50 yards in the side of the coyote. I still got 2 cases of this ammo and it works and one time I even tried 3 1/2 inch shells me and the dog got that one, it was dead and I was wounded on the nose. Back in the day when 3" or 3 1/2" shells weren't around 2 3/4" was all there was and they killed coyotes back then easy enough. Not trying to change anyones mind on ammo but use what you know works and stop spending a fortune on ammo that in the end doesn't preform any better or just a few yards more reach. I have good results with Nobel and won't shot anything else because I tried a lot of other ammo and cost a fortune. Maybe try it a few times and see if it works for you. Shoots good in a cheap Undertaker Choke from Walmart.

Ok Kirby I took a 4 by 3 foot piece of 5/8 plywood barn siding and set it out at 100 yards. There was no penetration at all. Of course there were no hits either. The ammo was Federal #4 Buck and I shot 3 rounds. Maybe with a different brand of ammo it would work better.

At 75 yards I had 2 pellets hit the board the first time and 4 additional pellets on the second shot at 75 yards. They all penatrated but it would have been pure luck to kill a coyote with the hit. So you better keep the gun you got it is one in a million.

Just wanted to add this.
I think I will try it with my 11-87 turkey gun which has a Pattermaster installed tomorrow. I have had 8 Remington HD T shot in a coyote silhouette kill zone at 70 yards when I patterned it last spring. I will see what that does with with the #4 buck.

mbowerma, best to compare with the same model shotgun & buckshot I used. No doubt, your results will very some from mine.

When I bought my goose gun, I did plenty of field testing [patterning & penetration testing on plywood @ varying yardages]. I knew my shotgun very well. Not to mention the potential of the ammo I used @ varying yardages.

Frankly, I don't give a hoot who believes me or not. As that does not change my experience's with long range shotgunning.

sounds like the jobs the stimulis was supose to save but then the real number

I've seen yotes killed @100 + yards with buckshot. I've hit a couple around 100 yards with buckshot. Had to trackem down and shoot them again. We only hunt in the snow here and make em bleed and they track much easier.
Is a shotgun a 100 yard gun NO ! Will it work sometime YES !

We run plated BB for fox/yotes when were unsure what will pop up. If a for sure yote is the target 4 buck and DC get the job.
