Longest Coyote Shot With Shotgun

We used to shoot a fair amount of coyotes with the shotgun when running them with dogs. It was safer to shoot the scatterguns in unfamiliar settins than wing pullets skipping across frozen fields. Never know when a cow might get in the way 1/2 mile down the road. Wounding wasn't that big a deal because a hurt coytoe would get caught by the dogs in short order. #4 buck was the flavor of the day after lead shot was banned for bird hunting. I had some lead BBs that worked really good out to 50-60 yards. I used a remington 870 with patternmaster choke tube for the #4 buck loads and it shot very well. I also used a remington turkey choke that did really well too.

I used the dead coyote 3.5" out of my 870 supermag with patternmaster and wouldn't hesitate to shot out to 60 yards on a fox or coyote.

I know several guys that shoot wolves out of planes with #4 buck and regularly shoot 50-70 yards.

What I find amusing is this magical 40-50yrd maximum. For a clean "lethal & or ethical" kill shot on coyotes. Heck yeah, I've shot them at very close range as well. Peppered them hard & still had coyotes get to their feet. Or try to.

1-coyote that sticks in my mind. I was so close to him, my pattern covered his body perfectly. Roughly a 3' pattern. That coyote rolled over in his bed & sat up, trying to run. This was with a 12ga Remington 3"mag, buffered #4Buck. My best estimate was he took almost every pellet/[41 pellets], a direct solid hit. Not some magical bang/flop DRT.

Anyone who has shot their share of coyotes. Whether, with a center fire or a shotgun. Knows, coyotes can often take a severe pounding. Without dropping dead in their tracks from the 1st solid/ supposed lethal? hit.

I've shot coyote with a centerfire & about cut them in 1/2, only to see them get to their feet & try to run. I've also shot them in the mid chest, leaving an exit hole you could stick your fist in & not touch the sides of the hole. Only to see those coyotes get to their feet, or try to.

As I've stated previous, long range shotgunning. You HAVE to, raise up some, for elevation pellet drop. Regardless, the penetration energy of Buckshot is still present.

Whether I was close or long range shotgunning. I kept hammering away, until they were stone dead.

Kirby,
I hear ya about taking a hit. Man those yotes are tough .

Skinned a yote for one of my guys a while back. It started with the first shot 22-250 ,broke one of it's legs. Had 2 22mag bullets in it, high body hits. There were also 4-5 #4 buck pelets in it. The final shot was a vital hit 22-250 again !

After that first hit That ole yote was a hard guy to get out if the brush .

"Whether I was close or long range shotgunning. I kept hammering away, until they were stone dead." ....Amen.. Well said !

We have killed them pretty comfortably out to 50-55 yds using
3-1/2" with Carlson extended choke and either Dead Coyote or the new Federal Coyote load and a red dot sight. Past that, they needed a little rifle back up after the shot.

Based on what I have seen in the last year, I think 50 yards is about the limit, with the correct equipment and a rifle back up.
