I'm looking to purchase a rifle this spring capable of hitting out to a 1000 yd. I was looking into the 308 or the 300 winchester Mag caliber. Any Ideas?
Watch the video Beyond Belief by long range video productions. John has some interesting equipment he uses for long range hunting. If you go to his website I believe that he goes over some of the equipment he uses. www.thebestofthewest.net
The place to start your idea is the bullet you'll shoot.
I'm going to assume you'll use the gun for longrange coyotes and general shooting.
Both the 308 and 300 win mag will shoot to 1000yd and beyond, but the recoil from those big long=high bc bullets is going to be heavy.
Shooting at those ranges you'll have to reload your ammo in order to fine tune the gun.
My mentality would be to follow success ,look at the 1000yd shooting competitions.
Unless you're hunting large game i'd drop down to 6.5 or 7mm caliber. That being said i'd look at the popular 6.5-284 caliber it dominates the 1000yd game.
I'd start by reading up on the vld=very low drag uld=ultra low drag bullets they are the only answer at extreme range.
A caliber with quality brass is another important consideration = lapua or norma, one piece to the next has to be consistant. With cheap brass you'll get some thick- some thin and more and less powder per round makes a big difference at 1000yds!
Let us know your ideas of use and i'm sure you'll get some good opinions.
Depending on your budget, low end -270wsm heavy barrel savage with a 6x18 nikon buckmaster and burris signature rings .$1000 ballpark
high end -408 cheyanne tactical-bat action-nightforce scope no holds barred.$5-6000.00 and anything in between!!!!!Mike
John shoots a 7mm WRP, a basic 7mm stw with a throating change. ya wanna extreme range rifle, go on www.longrangehunting.com and look up a guy called fiftydriver, His name is kirby allen, he's a smith and longrange enthusiast and he builds awesome rifles in calibers of his own design. Most knoledgeable guy I ever talked to about ballistics.
My new extreme range sporter is in the works now in the works, a 7mm Allen mag, shoots a 160 nosler at about 3725 fps.

Sako TRG42 in .338 Lapua. Well that's on the top of my want list anyway.
250gr Matchking @ 2900fps with a bc of .587
Still supersonic at 1000 yards with almost 3/4 ton of energy left. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Are you planning on shooting 1000 yrd matches? If so, you might want to check and see what the requirements for the class your wanting to shoot in are. I know several people who shoot 1000 yrd matches. some use 223,308, 300 win Mag, 6.5x284, and 338 LP. Open sights, scopes, bipods, palma, etc.
I dont know enough about this to recomend a barrel length. There is a guy her locally that shoots F class I believe (Front rest and scope). He uses a factory savage tactical. Onnly mods done to the rifle are a high dollar bipod and custom tube.
I thought I read that Carlos Hathcock (Marine sniper) used a 30/06 in 1000yd competition. I don't know what kind of knockdown power it would have at that range, though...
Yes, Carlos Hathcock, Jr. used a .30-06 in his favorite rifle, a Remington 700.
His son, Carlos III, uses a 6.5x284 and .223 for long range competition. Or maybe I should say "used" - C III just retired from the Marines at the ripe old age of 40!
Its going to take a heck of a caliber for bang plop perfromance at 1000 yards. I shot an antelope a little farther than this distance with my 300 RUM shooting 125g balistic tips. I hit it about an inch behind the shoulder just above its elbow crease and exited at about the same area on the oposite side. It was far enough away that I was able to recover from the shot(alos helped that I have a KDF break installed at the time) and was able to watch the impact. The antelope tilted sideways when hit and ran about 30 yards and tipped over stone dead.
in a 300 winny to get to 1k best and still have the energy needed for expansion and penetration on med game you'll be best served with a 30" fast twist barrel to shoot long heavy for caliber hi BC bullets. a brake helps with recoil but the noise is tremendous, I prefer to just build the rifle 2-2.5 pounds heavier and forgo the brake.

My buddys shot long range. They have shot prare dogs at 1000 and 1500 yards, they are trying for 2000 but have not got it done. They are shooting heavy guns with bull barrels. They shoot 6.5-284 ackley Imp. They are building some 30 cal to try and get that 2000 yard dog. But they love the 6.5-284 ackley Imp for under 1500.
Shooting a prairie dog at 1k yars is ok maybe even a coyote But not Deer or Antelope, come on guys shoot the paper and do your part as a hunter to get in there and make a quick clean kill, losts of things can happen between pulling the trigger and impact at long range. most of it is no good.
There was a man selling his 2000 yd rifle in the Varmint Hunter classifieds. Don't know if he got it sold yet. 300 WSM , all set up and ready to rock. If you got the change.
