Mag-na-Porting my Colt Anaconda

Any one have any experience mag-na-porting a 44 Magnum or larger? My hand gun really snaps back in my 52 year old hands . This growing old stuff sucks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
 
If it's done right, you will notice quite a difference in the recoil... The only down side to porting one is the reduction in night/low light vision after shooting it...since there is quite a bit of flame that comes up through the ports...

I had a Titanium Taurus (Lightweight 2.5" barrel) in .45LC that was ported and it made it a lot more pleasurable to shoot...

Most of out competition revolvers were ported on the pistol team for "open class" shooting and even in .38 spl, you could tell a difference..with light loads....

Just be sure to get it to a reputable company for the work...

The Anacondas are pretty collectible also, and any alterations might reduce the eventual value--if that were ever to be a concern, for you or your heirs.

But then again, guns are for shooting, and if you're never going to sell it and you plan to keep using it, port away. :)

I'd have to spend some time thinking that one through before magna-porting it, and I honestly can't say what I'd do.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
if money is an issue and you are not really in love with the anaconda, then why not sell the colt and buy a tuarus Raging bull. they are already ported and mine seems to be a good reliable gun. you would have money left over to spend on wammo

Depending on your barrel length, porting may or may not make much difference. I did two, early on, a 4" .44 Mag, and an 8 3/8" .44 Mag: the short one made a wonderful difference, the longer one, I can't tell a bit.
 
I had a Dan Wesson with a wide selection of barrels years ago. Two of them were ported and I do not remember that big off a difference really. Although I realize this is not the same I do remember the gun getting really dirty. What about shooting reduced loads? You never really said what you use the gun for but I would think it to be a cheap solution. Also try taking a higher grip into the web of you hand. This will help some as well.

Thats kinda what I was thinking my buddy just sold one at the gunshow for over $1000 with the box and paper work, before the show he offered it to me for $800 I'm still kicking myself in the you know what for passing that up.
 
I magna-ported a model 29 4" years ago made a good difference in recoil. But the noise was awful and since I would conceal carry it at times the one thing I hated was if I shot it in a low light condition the flash coming out of the ports would blind me like a flash bulb going off in my face. You would completely lose your target for awhile which is a bad deal on a carry gun.

Yep. For a little more than the porting, you could get a ported Taurus.
 
Mine came ported from the factory. Yours must be an early model. I wish I had the one stolen from me as well so I could have one for each side. If you want to talk about kick you should try my S&W Nite Guard. For what the Colt is worth you could trade it for a pair of ported wheel guns all day long.
 
Magnaport isn't too far away from me. They do excellent work, and that fact has been well documented for years. If you do it, go with them, even if you have to wait in line.

Personally, I have never owned a ported anything, and hope I never will. I'll take the recoil, and keep my hearing. I still shoot my 480 Ruger with 325gr handloads with one hand. Gimme about 9-10 more years, and maybe I won't be so "sporty" any more......grins
 
This thread is loaded with wisdom. I think I'm gonna load lighter loads. Open a can of Unique 12grs of that behind a 250 gr Cast still packs a wallop . This was a big help.I have no desire to ruin my Colt.

Your colt is worth 3 Tuaruses.
For me that would be a disappointing trade. I believe the S&W is closer to the quality of the Colt
 
Sounds like a good reason to get another .44 mag. Heck, I had 3 44 mags at one point, each one had it's purpose. I did not regret any of them. I only sold one because it was not accurate enough for me.
 
I have a few of each and I prefer the non ported (greatly).
You will probably lose between 30 to 60 fps due to porting, it may be more advantageous to back off your load 50 fps. I have a ported 454 Casull and I would much rather shoot my unported 475 Linebaugh.
