Magnification with pvs-14

I'm impressed with how clear the image is through the pvs-14 when used with the Sony 4.5X camera lens that SKYPUP posted a few months ago.
Anyone try 6X or 8X lens with a pvs-14.

Different powered lens would be a cheap way to change your setup depending on the expected shot distance.

I have only used the 3X and 5X mil-spec afocal lens along with several 3X below commerical style camera lens. The 5X work well on a pvs-14 with strong performing tube.I would love to have something like a 100mm 6X CAT lens for long range viewing but havent seen such a beast anywhere on ebay or net.

is the Sony 4.5x longer or shorter than the milspec 3x? it looks like it may be shorter but without seeing them side by side I can't tell. reason I ask is space is a premium on my rail and if it's longer I would have to move my scope forward to use it.

When you get it could you compare it with mil spec 3x, ie light gathering and clarity. I have not used mil spec but have 3.5x and 4.5x tele lens and they work great.

from Skypup's pictures it looks like it is quite a bit longer than the 3x which means I will have to move my Aimpoint forward to allow it to fit. that means my DBAL I2 has to move off of my top rail to the side which is not good. decisions decisions... I may just have to have something built with a longer top rail to have room on top and put the 4.5 Sony in the safe until then.

Can you give us a link to buy for that sony? Couldn't find the old post.

Keep us posted if it is a better picture through a pvs 14 than the milspec 3x? That 3x is expensive.

here is a cut and paste from Skypup's original post:

It is a Polaroid Super HD 4.5X Telephoto with a huge 70mm Objective Lens and a HUGE 58mm Ocular Lens that is IR compatible, light weight and only cost $70:

You will need a $4 30mm to 58mm step up ring to attach it to the 30mm objective lens of the PVS-14, I have mine screwed into the 760nm IR filter:

So far I think it is the best lens I have used on the PVS-14.

Thanks. Just ordered it. Have you used it with the laser and shot with it? I am assuming its accurate when using the laser or eotech?

Any poi change?

I just ordered it myself yesterday or the day before. I have shot a lot with the 3x mil spec and it's better because I can see better being amplified so I have to shoot close range to test for POI change, but I always do better with magnification. so to answer your question, no POI change that I can tell. I have used the laser very little and I know that the laser points lower than it should but have not even bothered to coexist them. I should probably just sell the I2. that would solve the problem with using the 4.5x fitting on the rail.

well I got the 4.5x today and it is shorter than the milspec 3x. it sure looks longer in Skypup's pictures to me. I looked a little closer and see he is using a different mount between the two. I have not got the step down ring yet so I can't put it all together just yet to be sure but it looks like it may just fit right in there. hopefully I will get the step down on Monday.

That lens works real good off a stand, it has a HUGE objective and gathers allot of light and the resolution is very good, it is lighter than the USGI 3X Mag too.

The USGI lens are the best, but they are really heavy too.

I think you will like the Polaroid lens...

None.

There you go folks...Skypup just save you alot of money in ammo and a whole bunch of range time!!

Wow i can't beleive that big lense is lighter than the military 3x that TNVC sells. I'll guess ill find out when i drop them on my feet in the heated blind

ok so lets recap and please fill in the blanks...

Sony 2x $?????
polaroid 4.5x $76.94 with the step up ring. plus shipping amazon
USGI 3X $ 479.00 plus shipping TNVC and other vendors

The 3x is nice and does slide on and off easily, and can screw in. I can also click it in place with the monoloc. I use electrical to make the 3x ring just slightly bigger to hold the magnifier. This way I can take it in and out fast without having to take off the monoloc.

Okay...

Fill in the rest of the blanks....

As I understand it you get to magnify either by connecting a multilplier lens to the PVS14 or you get to use the PVS14 behind a magnified scope.

So what is being done in this thread.....what are the magnifier lenses being used with.......what are you running in front of the magnifier ......the Eotech??

I just use the magnifier for scanning the edge of the woods and to get familar with the ground before i start the thermal search.

I personally didnt like the eotech with or without the magnifier for coyote hunting. Eotech does have a great field of view. But think about it...there is a reason why eotech makes a magnifier to go in front during the daytime..its because it needs more power..

If I was hunting zombies eotech would be the best..
Plus when you put the eotech on the EXPS30 with the magnifier you will get a tear drop center dot. Meaning it wont be clean, the magnifier does wobble a little when on the pvs 14. EOTECH says it was not designed to be used with the 3x magnifier on the pvs14.

but if you love the EOTECH then you will like the 3x.

I moved the EOTECH to the shotgun and use it as a backup just in case the IR laser fails. I also use it to check the IR and visble laser before i go into the woods. Meaning when i look through EOTCH at 30 yards or so the IR and Visible Laser should be really close to the Eotch dot.

I know this stuff has been on the forum before but I just want to point this out since everyones had the EOTECH and lasers for a while - Maybe we can get some more detailed feedback.
