Magnification with pvs-14

Mr. B. I was just referring to the 3x USGI that connects to the PVS 14, not the Eotech 3x daytime magnifier. since I have the USGI 3x, the 2.5x Sony does not interest me but the 4.5x Poloroid does. I am pretty sure I am going to go with a new clip-on if the price is where I think it will be. I have a 3x Aimpoint daytime magnifier and the Aimpoint CompM4s. no Eotech here at all.

Shurshot,

I know what you are saying I was trying to make the point that the EOTECH needs magnification in most hunting situations, nightvison or daytime shooting. Maybe its me but what is the longest head shot at night you would take on a yote? or even a body shot on a raccoon? and feel comfortable you will always hit.

The 4.5 interest me too. Somebody is making a lot of money off the USGI 3x..Probably because it switches so many hands before it gets to the consumer.

During the day with my Eotech, I can hit a beer can @ 175 yards 3/5 times, with the 3X Day Magnifier 4/5 times.

At night, I have shot allot of coyotes and hogs, more than 75, with just the Eotech @ 100-200 yards.

I have three Eotechs with the 65 MOA circle around the 1 MOA dot.

When hunting, I DO NOT USE THE CENTER DOT, I simply put the target inside the 65 MOA circle and pull the trigger, my brain instinctively places the circle over my center of aim. Works extremely well for fast action as well as targeted standing shots at night....try it, you will like it.

I agree that fine crosshairs and magnification are a good thing. personally this is compounded for me because I have astigmatism which makes a red dot sight look more like a bug smashed on a windshield rather than a dot. but I sighted mine so that POI is just above that smashed bug and with practice was able to get pretty good with it. I feel confident out to a little over 200 yards if the yote was standing still. that is why the clip-on looks very inviting to me. it gets rid of the red dot and offers whatever crosshairs I choose along with magnification.

You guys got me thinking about this astigmatism thing.....especially since I have the Eotech and PVS14 ordered. I have read that some do not even realize they have it until they try a red dot scope.

I called my eye doctor and had the nurse check my records.....none...GTG... whew!

Yes Mr B....got a headache from trying to figure out what to buy....and now a big hole in my wallet.

My thanks to you and Skypup....You guys are a great source for ideas and experience for NV setups. The only problem is most of your ideas are expensive.

Now......what's next?

you guys went and did it to me again! I am having a new rifle speced out now...

it will have a Vltor rifle length monolithic rail with an 18 inch barrel. haven't decided on which barrel yet.

Geissele SSA-E trigger
Magpul PRS AR15/M16 (5.56N) Rifle Stock
nickel boron bolt

this is what I have so far. Gman has given me some advise... anyone else want to chime in on parts?

my friend says that parts are very hard to come by right now but says he will be able to get what he needs.

film at 11.

I also had to order the 4.5X lens myself I had a mil-spec 5X afocal but traded it off last year and really missed it this fall I hate to say. How does the 4.5X lens do at low light on a PVS-14 strong pinnacle/filmless tube?

Very good, it has a huge objective.

I am testing the 4.5 now. So far the 3x is more clear at range of 100. Not much...

4.5 more field of view is larger at 100 and is worth every penny.

Bad news with 4.5 is the screw in attachment. You risk damaging your pvs 14 if you plan on taking it on off all night. Maybe Skypup can figure out how to get a push on mount like the 3x hooked up to this thing.

Going to use it as a backup until I get another pvs14 Another Great find!

I got mine setup on the PVS. I had no choice but to put the IR filter on it because my twist mount sticks out just far enough to interfere with threading the 4.5x onto the PVS but the thickness of the IR filter gives me the needed clearance to thread it all together. it was noticibly darker looking through the 4.5 but clear. I put it on the helmet and that was no good for me. too heavy for one thing and the only way I can focus on anything is to cover my other eye. I won't be using the helmet for sure. I need to drag the rifle out of the safe to make sure it will fit on but I am pretty sure it will. I don't think I will ever use the laser now either. I would have to get an eye patch to even consider it.

Those magnifiers work best when you are on a stand shooting over a bait pile or your E-caller, they absolutely sux for walking around mounted on your helmet, unless you are laying on your back watching a meteor shower in a field somewhere...they also kinda sux for walking around in the woods with them mounted on your PVS-14 on the rail, I only mount mine when I am in a stand calling.

I think I am going to put my helmet/mount an DBAL I2 up for sale. I don't see myself using them. I will use the PVS mounted on the rifle and scan with the PS-32 for now. then I will get another NV of some sort...

I've shot allot of hogs and coyotes using my helmet mounted PVS-14 and DBAL-I2 IR laser, what don't you like about that setup?

That setup provides great situational awareness, especially when using the PS-32 for detection with the other eye.

I just can't see well with it. I have to close my other eye or cover it to be able to see through the PVS and I just don't like wearing the helmet because it isn't comfortable.
