most powerful 7mm

There's nothing a 308 will do that a 7mm won't do better!!! Unless you plan on shooting cheap store bought ammo then the 308 would win, but if not then I can see no reason on choosing a 308 over a 7mm!!! A 308 isn't even in the same ballpark as any of the 7mm's that have been listed in this thread.

I dont think he meant a 308win. We went from the fastsest 7 to 308. I think he meant fast 30. That why assumed he wanted big horsepower and went 338L. Savage long range hunter would be affordable and factory ammo is available.

That would definitely make more sense!!! Granted I think their head was a couple quarts short of an oil change but I've met some that think the 308 win is the end all, beats all cartridge!!!

sounds to me you should look at a 300 RUM. Not that the 7mm RUM wouldnt work but there is more factory loads for the 300 and you can roll some real heavy weights for real big game.

Why? Deer and elk simple. 7mm anything accept some kind of subsonoc suppressor bs is plenty. Sure I like my powerhouses, they are flat and hit hard, but why go to such an extreme? 7mm rem mag, 7 mm weatherby if you are feeling eccentric. 7 saum 7rum all readily available and an elk won't know the difference between any of the fast 7s.

Big 7's or 30's kill elk just fine.
My LR hunting rifle will be a 28 Nosler (26" barrel), Manners stock. Extended Wyatt's box, and throated for the 195 Berger.

For that, I'd go with a 7mm-08.

I want to bump this cause im in the same boat im looking for a new 7mm because mine is a heirloom and im retiring it. Also have somthings to add.

One thing the .28 nosler has going for it that the stw rum etc is a regular long action. If you dont like it you have many more options to when you wanna change caliber. Im really considering the 28.

Also as mentioned the 7 wsm holds the mile world record group. And everyone says there is no difference in the two and that record is a Totally different thing bench gun. And the 7mm rem mag could also maybe do it. But still makes me wonder. If a shorter case and stiffer action affect accuracy and set them slightly apart like say a .308 and a .30-06. I dont want to open that can of worms and i love the 06 the last gun ill sell is my 06. But when your talking 1,200yds to a mile. Its the small things that put you on target or put you way off.

But for me what it comes down to is.i already have a rem 7mm mag. Dies and brass. and the gun i got has killed everything i ever shot at if i did my job. It has tons of bullets data and the biggest plus is i can get ammo in a pinch at any walmart or backwoods mom and pop fudd shop in north america.

Should have my 28 Nosler hunting rifle in about a month.
Not a long or heavy barreled set-up.
Distances you have in mind?
I plan on grouping mine past 1K and on a good day at 2k.
If it is a hunting rig you are not going to need a lot of brass, so costly brass is really not an issue in the big picture.

I love the 7mm cartridge and I'm sure all those listed are great. I do have a Remington Sendero 7mm STW and I absolutely love it. I shoot 140 gr. Barnes TSX bullets for drop-right-there performance on mule deer and antelope. This is one of my top favorite rifles / cartridges.

I have a Rem 700 Deluxe 7mm Rem Mag. I bought it when I first moved to Alaska. I've killed Sitka Blacktail deer, BIG Mountain Goats, Caribou and Whitetail Deer with it. It shoots extremely well, 3/4" groups are easy with it and it can do better using target projectiles.

I don't have any experience with the newer 7mm cartridges but, frankly, why would I look for something else when what I have is ideal for what I bought it for?

I may have over looked it but a 280 AI is not the most powerful, but it one heck of a round. Almost the exact a 7 Rem Mag billistics but with less powder so you can stay on target. Also holds 5 rounds not 3 in factory mag.

Most over look this cartridge, and it shoots sub 1/4" groups with the 180g Berger hunting at 2800 fps.

I got to handle my 28 Nosler this past week but while planning the build I bought a JP Eliminator while they were clearanced and got wrong one. So mine is waiting on Muzzle break although the it's sitting in a temporary McMillan stock as well.
I also throated for 195's but also checked with new Sierra 183's and they will be a good option for steel.
Horizon Firearms has a new stock which it will be dropped in as soon as finished.
Mine is mainly for shooting 1000 yard steel in our local match so I doubt I will hunt with it.
I did shoot a Nilgai with the 28 Nosler last fall and it did great. Little over 300 yards with the 175 LR Nosler AccuBond.
