My DPMS Prairie Panther has arrived

Here is a picture of my new DPMS Prairie Panther in 223 caliber. So far, it looks like it is going to be a real shooter. It has a Vortex Crossfire 4-16x50 scope with Vplex Wide Illuminated reticle, 20" target grade barrel, 1 in 8 twist, 2 stage match trigger. Didn't have a bore sighter, so I had to shoot at 25 yds to start, taking 8 shots out the truck window to get it halfway right at least, and then back to 100 yds with my bench, etc., and it took 12 shots to get it almost there, one more adjustment, and 4 shots exactly where I wanted them, easily covered by a dime. I think I'm gonna like it, but the coyotes won't like it a bit.

coyoteclyde, I'll post the exact load when I am through tweaking it. I feel sure it will involve the 55 grain Sierra Blitz King, H4895 powder in the neighborhood of 25 grains, CCI small rifle primer, Winchester and Hornady brass. I haven't shot it enough yet to be sure.
 
Kirby, that is the one piece tactical mount by Burris. My scope has the 30mm tube, so I bought the model designed for that. It is Item #410341 and is called AR-P.E.P.R. Mount (30mm). It comes with two sets of ring tops, the smooth like I have on there now, and an extra set with Picatinny Ring to mount a shooting light, a red dot sight, or other accessories. Guaranteed for life, and by far the strongest mounting system I have ever had.
 
Kirby, it would accomodate a 56 mm bell end no problem. It just looks comfortable with my 50 mm Vortex. I don't recall them offering different heights, but I may be wrong. I'll check and see and let you know.
 
Here is my Dpms, if the pictures comes out. It has a Larue quick release mount on it. I can put my carry handle on/off is a couple of seconds and no matter what the scope is always on zero. Leupold 8.5x25x50

Kirby, I don't think it is called extra high. The specs at the Burris site show 1" from the top of the rifle to the bottom of the scope. Here are some pictures of the setup at different angles, including the extra top rings that come with it if you want to mount some other accessory on top of the scope.

If the center if the scope is about 2.5" above the center of the bore on an AR, your optic is just about perfect for comfortable shooting, for the average person...

Any lower and you can get a cramp in your jaw from trying to get a good cheek weld and still have a good sight picture...

Rings I've been useing for a number of yrs, are a tad low. Need a better set-up.
 
Kirby, take a look at the RRA cantilever mount. Nice solid steel, about the right height, priced a bit less than the Burris unit, and made right here in the good ol' USA instead of China. I've got two mounted up now, and a third ready for a scope. Good solid mounts.
