Need a new .308 Win bolt gun...

I'm looking to get a new .308 soon. It will be used for deer hunting and plinking steel at the range, so somewhat of a cross over gun.

Things I'd like would be a medium contour barrel, 20"-22" preferred, 24" would be ok. I don't want it too heavy, as I'll still carry it on occasion. I don't want to go custom, but may to get what I want.

Currently looking at Weatherby Vanguard H-Bar RC or regular RC model, Remington 700 LTR, Howa barreled action with stock of my choice, or I have tossed around the idea of a Browning X-Bolt Varmint and switching the stock.

What do you guys thoughts and experience?

Give the Bergara B14 Hunter a look. It has a factory guarantee of MOA with good ammo. Mine shoots almost half that with handloads. The action is smooth as a baby's bottom and accepts Remington 700 bases. The composite stock is very nice with a good feel and a green texture. Comes from the factory with a Timney trigger. The barrel is a 22" standard contour and is free-floated. Great rifle, shoots really good and is good looking. Just one more option for you to consider.

You also might want to look a a Rem 700 PSS if you can find one. It has a 26" barrel and every one I've owned has been a very good shooter. Great stock also.

. 6mm06, that is a very nice rifle you have there. I may be the only one that doesn't know about Bergara rifles, but could you give us a little history of this company. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

I have looked at Bergara, they are nice rifles. Was wanting a touch heavier barrel, which they do have that model, but I didn't want the stock the rifle comes with.

I may go Howa 20" heavy barrel or the Vanguard B-bar. Never had any complaints with those two and can find a stock I like.

I think a perfect example of the rifle I am wanting is the TC Icon Precision Hunter. Wish I would have grabbed one when they were around.

I was eyeballing a Rem 700 Tactical ADL at Dicks yesterday. Looks like an SPS Tactical without the Hogue, and replaced it with that brown stock found on the VTR. Sticker was only $500 and believe there is still a rebate. Looks like this is a nice option for guys who will eventually ditch the stock anyway.

All good options.
the " Howa barreled action with stock of my choice" sounds interesting, I've toyed with that idea as well.

Sorry for not answering your question before, but I just now saw the print in the middle of the photos on your post.

I only know that Bergara barrels are fairly well known, especially in some accurate muzzleloaders. You can Google it and find plenty of information. The rifle is made in Spain with high quality steel.

This is the first Bergara I have owned and I'm glad I made the purchase. I was shopping here and there for a rifle to dedicate to hog hunting, thinking of a .308 when I found the Bergara. There was a Remington 700 sitting beside it in the gun shop rack that had a green composite stock also and a slightly heavier barrel that I also looked at. The Bergara was somewhere in the $700 range while the Remington was well over $1,000 something or maybe $1,100, don't remember exactly.

I liked the feel of the Bergara and the smooth action. I was impressed with it in my hands. The guy at the store informed me of the 1 MOA or better guarantee from the factory. I asked more questions and he suggested that I contact the company for more information. I said "let's phone now" and so he phoned the US company and handed the phone to me, so I was able to speak with a company rep who told me the same thing. I asked "what if the rifle doesn't shoot as advertised" and he said to send it back to the company and that they would check it. If they couldn't remedy the problem they would issue me a new rifle or a refund. I took the chance on it, purchased it and now am very pleased with it and have no regrets.

Accuracy is great and I took the first head of game with it back in April - a Georgia hog that went over 200 pounds.

Here's the video of the shot just for fun.

6mm06, Sorry fo the way I posted that reply. Kind of learning as I go. The better half handed me this I-Pad one day and said you better had learn to use it or the world is going to pass you by. Sure enough went to the doctor the other day, and they hand me a I-Pad to fill out my history! Anyway thanks for introducing me toBergara rifles. Been doing a little research since then, and I’m very impressed. Nice hog hunt video and bullet performance. No one can argue with the knockdown power of the .30 caliber bullet.

They do shoot very well, and they are available in 20". But, they are heavy.

If you can find any, try some Hornady 178g TAC loads in those Remingtons, and get ready for a real shock on the size of the groups...small!

Rumor has it that in the beginning, Ed Shilen was an advisor for Bergara barrels. These are not Shilen barrels, he only advised them on manufacturing them. Later on, they started producing their own rifles.
