Need help locating Greyhound, to be used on boar.

I am located in Texas and my wife has one hot-blooded female greyhound, that was raised from a pup to be a hog dog. We use Foxy to shut down runners, as a back up catch dog, and she is used to sight hunt on the occasion that we actually see a hog in the clear. My wife has been wanting another greyhound to help Foxy with the larger hogs, and we have been having a heck of a time locating someone that is actually using their greyhounds on game.

Last year we went to a greyhound farm and picked up 3,one year old dogs, but none of them had any drive to pursue small pigs, squeeling pigs, etc. Though they would play heck on a piece of hide

We have spoken with several farms trying to purchase a pup, but all the farms want to raise them on the chance that they will make a dog on the track.

She is not interested in a stag, or any other crosses, as she likes the self preservation aspect that her greyhound has displayed. When the going gets tough, Foxy will back up an bay, waiting on the bulldogs to show up.

If anyone has any leads, or knows what direction I might need to be focusing my efforts in locating a greyhound pup, please let me know. The closer to Texas the better, but I certainly don't mind shipping the right pup.

yfzduner,
She's a keeper for sure. Her birthday was the other day, and she asked for a new cut vest for her catch dog...Yep, no jewelry for her, just Kevlar for her catch dog! She and I have separate packs of dogs, some might say she even has some better dogs than I do.

Vargy,

I don't think we will be able to make it to the trade/swap days in two weeks, but we might be able to make the one in Oct. If it's okay I will pass your number along to my wife, as she knows what she wants in a greyhound. Maybe you can point her in the right direction of locating a pup or young dog.

I'll use this post to introduce myself and our dogs. My family lives in the Houston area, and we try to hunt once or twice a week in various areas of Texas and we occasionally venture into Oklahoma. Our primary game pursued is hogs, run with dogs. We also run the occasional jack rabbit with Mandi's greyhound, and we enjoy gun hunting exotics in the Texas hill country. Axis, Red Stag, Fallow, Black Buck to name a few.

Mandi and some of the other greyhounds she has tried. They were track dogs that we picked up at ~one year old, and they did not make the cut to be hog dogs.

Great stuff CC looks like you guys have a blast. Cool too that the whole family enjoys. Welcome to PM. Keep those hunts coming to us. Enjoy your stories and pictures. D

Chris I talked to you wife today. I will find her a pup. I gave her a guys name to check with. Looks like she signed up on my board now. There are some good people on there.

Tyson is/was a backyard savage. I got him at one year old, as he was destroying his owners yard, and constantly broke out of their yard. I was told he is a pit, though somedays I think he might be an American Bulldog x Pit. No way to know for sure what breed he is. I had him neutered and use him as my primary catch dog.

I do have a young Dogo. He is 10 months old, and I plan to start him on small pigs in a couple months.

Here is a pic of my Dogo pup, "Whetto", trying on a new cut vest.

Hello guys, this is Mandi. I see that I have already been introduced. Its a pleasure to be here, and thanks for the welcome.

Vargy, thanks for taking the time to talk to me yesterday. I know very little about sighthounds other than what Foxy has been kind enough to teach me. That said, I most certainly enjoy hunting with her, to the point that she is my favorite dog in my pack (but don't tell Tater or Lizzie that). Hopefully with the guidance of you and some others I can expand the sight hound portion of my pack and increase the fun factor even more.

I look forward to getting to know y'all!
Cheers

Welcome aboard Mandi. These guys will steer you right!

Suffice it to say that there is a huge difference in the necessary qualities in the average "Hot Blood" off the track and a Hunting dog that has been selectivly bred to HUNT for many generations.

I can most certainly see that as absolute truth. The three hotbloods I tried other than foxy had zero desire to catch or kill anything other than mats of wool left in my pens by my sheep. Foxy by contrast lives to sink her teeth into something. I'm assuming that even though she is a hot blood she would be something to use to add more greyhound to a stag cocktail.

The thing that I am wondering about with the stags is their added tenacity. Are they less likely to set back and bay, and at that are they more likely to find themselves injured?

Thoughts?

Cheers

Hey Mandi! I think my wife met you at the Expo in Halletsville. Nice to see more TDHA folks crossing over and floating about the internet.

Hello machine 73 and duane! Machine, I never really apprecited a ridgeback until I saw mrs machine's two boys. Good Lord those are a couple of fine dogs.

I have two hot bloods coming this week that I had discussed prior to ever looking into coldbloods and stags. If I had my way, the big male would work for me and I could cross him over a stag/saluki gyp if I could find one. Machine73, you know from the ethd board that I march to my own drummer and I have a love of all things which are anything but ordinary.

Cheers

They are pretty, I will say that. They have been real slow starters though. I like folks that aren't afraid to work outside the box. For myslef, I'd like to find a jagd x whippet lurcher to use on small game.

I'll stick with a puppy by or a breeding with two successful, better yet outstanding, hunting parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. Best to the Best! They are out there just gotta get next to the guys that have 'em.

I figure trying to create a new breed with pets, race or show stock isn't likely to improve my odds for success. For me the Holy Grail of buying a puppy is to search out and verify the successful Re Breed(s).

An old coaches saying.....I will be convinced that genetics don't matter when a Shetland pony wins the Kentucky Derby. Good kids can't win without good coaching. But, Great coaches can't win without good kidsl

All JMHO.

The use of crosses is very common amongst hog hunters all over the world. And using lurchers or longdogs on small game isn't anything earth shattering either.
