New Groundhog Hunting Toy

I think the gold tips are Remingtons own bullet. The old Rem V-maxs that I have are green tip and have the big R stamped on the case head below the rim. These chronoed faster than any of the other Rem V bullets at 2,140fps at 10ft. from muzzle! they shoot great in my VMBZ and hit real hard. I also have some of the gold tips, OSSI coyote killers the 35gr. V-max extented range and the 30gr. V-maxs from CCI and Hornady all great cartridges.

Here is a pic of Remington ammo at work. The group is a 50 yard, 3 shot groups out of my Marlin. Which version is this

That is new Remington load. The older Remington loads have the green tipped Hornady V-max bullet. Like I said I think Remignton is using there own design for the new ammo.

DoubleCK, darn good shooting.

Left is Remington's 33 gr. Accutip-V and Right is Hornady's 30 gr. V-Max.

I tried the Hornady's in my Marlin and they did ok, but not as good as the Remington. I haven't tried them yet in the Ruger.

I also have some of these and will give them a try. I don't expect them to shoot as good as the Remington, but I won't know until I try. Both of these are 40 gr. bullets.

Out of curiosity, how did the Hornadys compare to the Remingtons in price?

The Hornady's were $13.99 and the Remingtons were over $18. I got a little change back from a $20. Pretty expensive, but darn good shooters - the best I have ever shot in a .22 magnum.

The Rems are $15.95 down here. 6mm don't be surprised if those Winchesters don't shoot real good out of the VMBZ Ive shot some 1"ers at 100yds. with mine. And they are a great coyote bullet for the 22 magnum.

The accuracy is well worth the difference.

When you try the V-Maxs, please post the target. I'm curious as to the results.

Yes Ive shot the CCI 40gr. Maxi Mag. They shot good and gave good hunting accuracy. When I chronoed them they shot right at 1,910fps. and when shot into the wet newspaper they gave good penetration and weight retension about like the Win super X Mags. The CCI Maxi Mags have been around since 1973 and for good reason, they work very well and get the job done great all around cartridge and good for larger small game.

That is a very nice looking rifle. You will have a lot of fun with it. I've never owned a .22 mag in a rifle. Might have to get one just to try it out.

UPDATE:

My Nikon scope would not hold zero, so I sent it back to the factory for repair. I since purchased a new Leupold Vx2 3x9 with a Leupold dot reticle and installed that in Warne Maxima rings on the model 77/22. I sent the Leupold back to the factory and had the parallax set for 60 yards. It was originally set for 150.

This evening I sighted the rifle in and did a bit of experimenting with different brands of ammo. From the looks of the targets, you would think it's rigged. But, the truth is, the Remington load is the most accurate .22 mag. load I have ever fired in two different rifles. The others don't come close, in my gun, at least.

Here is the new groundhog getter for this summer, and the results of ammo testing.

YoteKiller,

I'm just surprised at the difference in accuracy. I never expected that much variation. My gun certainly is picky over what it likes.

I've read that .22 magnums can be finiky. I just never expected it to that degree. At least it likes a good load.

Groundhogs beware come June.

Where do you live in Tennessee? Do you shoot groundhogs?

David

It really surprised me too.

I live about 20 miles SE of Nashville, between Franklin and Murfreesboro. Two well known Civil War battlefield cities.

I used to shoot g-hogs all the time. Now that coyotes have migrated here, groundhogs are few and far between. The last one I had the opportunity to shoot was 4 yrs ago. I shot a mother and 2 youngins. If I had known those were the last 3 I'd see, I never would have taken the shot.

This is where the 3 were shot. Landowner said before the coyotes came, the place was over run by groundhogs. As you can see, there are many, many ditches where the GHs had their holes.

It's really a shame what the coyote has done to groundhog populations. The numbers here are way down too. I struggle to get enough in a summer to produce a video.

Several years ago, there were so many groundhogs that a friend and I laid aside our varmint rifles and picked up TC Contender pistols. We both shot .223s and 30 Herretts. We shot over 50 groundhogs alone with just the pistols. I only wish I had the video equipment back then that I have now. What a nice video that would have made.

Just one more reason to lay it to the coyotes. They have about destroyed our varmint hunting.

6,
How did those 40gr Super X shoot in your rifle???

They are not fancy or expensive but have shot the best in several of the 22mags I've been around....
