New Groundhog Hunting Toy

Well, those Win. Super X HPs shoot really well in the Ruger. They did ok in the Marlin, but nothing to get excited about.

Chris, you are right about the cost of the 33 Remingtons being too much, but I don't have much of a choice where I live unless I order them. Then, I have to pay shipping costs.

Jeff, how's things in Indiana? I remember you mentioning the Winchesters. Glad I tried them.

I initially ordered 250 Win. Super X, and have since ordered another 250, so I'm stocking up on that one since it shoots so good in the Ruger.

I shot a coyote in the neck at 106 steps with the Winchester 40gr. jhp, he never moved. I have a marlin stainless laminated that shoots them just fine. This is THE best do everything load for the 22 magnum. You have made a good decision.

They are hard to find around here also, so the last time the local Cabela's got them in I picked up 4 boxes, they were about $11 a box.

Justin, that's an impressive shot at 106 yards. Apparently that bullet really is a good one.

The last ones I ordered were from Sportsman's Guide. Good price on them there.

I had seen these two late summer pups a couple times before I managed to bag one.
I was spotlighting off my atv (legal in Texas) when I came across them in a field about 175 yards out. I killed the engine and started squeaking with my lips to try and draw them in. I was starting to kick my self for not bringing the 270 but then one starts angling toward me closing the distance.
As he reached the edge of the brush I barked to stop him. I had no idea of the actual range but knew it was a long shot for the little magnum, so when he stopped to look at me I held right on his nose and pulled the trigger. He dropped to the shot.
I counted 106 steps to him, the little slug had dropped a couple inches and hit him right under the chin and exited the back of the neck.

This was stretching the capability of the 22 mag to it's limits on something as large and tough as a coyote, but I would have no reservations about attempting the same again with this setup. The 22 mag isn't meant to be a long range cartridge, but it can do an awful lot with the right bullet within it's effective range.

David,

I doubt you've been getting much groundhog hunting in with you filming. Have you had any luck with the new Ruger? With the targets you've been posting, I thought for sure a few varmints would have hit the dusty trail. I know the coyote bought the farm, so I guess that answers your question about will the Winnys get the job done with the soft tips.

On a side note, I will order a box of Fiocchi 40 grain jacketed soft points next time I order some bulk HM2 or HMR and mail it to you to try out. I've had great success with Fiocchi in 22LR. I have no clue if the perform in WM but they sure are a deal when bought in bulk.

Eric,

My new groundhog hunting toy ( Ruger ) hasn't seen any action yet, on groundhogs at least. It did, however, drop that coyote earlier in the month.

I have seen the Fiocchi 40 grainers and have wondered about that one myself. But, since the Super X 40s work so well, I haven't thought much about trying anything new.

As to my groundhog hunting and video, I've only been hunting twice, each time took a different friend. I did the filming and they did the shooting. They got one each and I got the shots on video.

I generally give buddies the first crack at shooting and I do the video work, then we trade out. I have tried twice to get on one with the new Ruger 22 mag., but those darn pigs are wild. On this particular farm, it seems that when they go in the hole, they stay there for quite a while. Then to, hunting with rimfires is a lot different than doing it from 300 yards away. I hope to go back this coming week. I have dedicated this summer to rimfires only, so it's taking time and careful stalking, but is a lot of fun.

We aren't seeing many groundhogs this year, and things are slow right now. I don' think we have the numbers that you do out your way. We used to have a good population, but not anymore, probably due to the coyote.

Here are the photos of Jim and Travis. Both took the groundhogs with two different .17 HMRs.

Jim took his groundhog with a Savage 93 heavy barrel and Hornady 17 gr. V-Max at a
distance of 117 yards. It was hit in the neck / chest area and dropped like a rock. We
thought he had taken another one that had got into the hole, but upon careful examination
of video, determined that it was a miss.

Travis used my CZ 452 American with CCI 20 gr. Game Points, head shot at 45 yards.
This one took quite a bit of stalking and patience in the hot sun, but he got him.

Well, the new toy took it's first groundhog this evening. I used the Winchester Super X 40 gr. HP at a distance of 86 yards. Had to shoot prone on that one. I heard the bullet thump hard and the pig went straight down. That bullet performed great.

Marco,

The hat is cheap, but a good one. It keeps the sun off my neck and face better. It's a bit light in color, as is the camo I'm wearing.

The camo is Cabela's Open Country and the reason I wore it is due to the heat, it being light weight, and the shirt is porous allowing air to pass through.

Multicam is much better camo for the grass, but it's heavy and hot. Still, I will probably wear it since I've been after a groundhog that is wild as a marsh hare. I've tried three times unsuccessfully to get on that one. It goes in the hole and seems to stay there.

I've been rolling over the idea of trying to dye the hat to a green color. Don't know if that will work or not. I thought about getting another one just like it and giving it a try. Any experience with something like that?

I almost ordered the ghillie from All Predator Calls when it was on sale. I wish now I would have. I think I could crawl up within rimfire distance wearing a ghillie.

I'm having fun anyway, and got three kill scenes for the new video, so all is not too bad.

Jeff,

I did consider paint but it may fill up the pores in the hat. I thought about clothes dye, but not sure if that will work or not. I may give it a try.

Marco, I really like the ruger VMBZ. It's a fine rifle and built the way a rifle should be. It has a solid look and feel to it.

As far as accuracy, it's doing pretty good. I did have a bit of trouble with trajectory on some groundhogs where I shot over at distances around 90 yards. Of course, I was shooting both uphill and down, so that may account for the rise in the bullet impact.

When the bullet hit that one groundhog, it made a very loud and distinct pop. It sounded as if it hit hard. The groundhog went straight down.

I agree on the VMBZ 6mmo6, I got my VMBZ back in 98 and its like an ol bottle of wine it gets better with age! And its the most accurate 22 magnum I ever seen or shot. My buddy and I were at the range awhile back and he had his colt out getting it ready for an egg shoot. He would go down range drive a piece of pipe into the ground and put the egg on top of the pipe, then walk back to the bench talk and brag about how accurate his .223 colt was fire a shot hit the egg than go back down put up another egg. Well I get real tired of hearing about his accurate colt, so while he would talk I acted like I was shooting at my target, but I was shooting his eggs!! Its was pretty funny, he would put up the egg on his stand come back to the bench start talking Id say fire in the hole blow his egg up he would stop talking to shoot the egg look through his scope look dumb founded and say the wind must have blew his egg off the stand. Now this went on for atleast 6 shots till I started smiling, and he caught on to what I was doing, need less to say he wasnt very happy and didnt ask me to go to the range for awhile! But he did say that was one accurate 22 magnum I had, and he never complements anyone on there rifles.

Nothing like taking the wind out of someone's sails occasionally. It keeps us all a little more humble, hopefully.

Hey Jeff,

Today I went to Wally-World and purchased a new hat just for experimenting with Krylon. The hat was marked down to $7, so no big loss if it didn't turn out well.

The hat was the same color as the one in the previous photo, but had a wide, black cloth hat band around it. I took it off, spay painted the hat, then replaced the old hat band with a camo one I had lying around.

An initial problem I see with the Krylon is that it will scrape off rather easily. Is there something I can spray on it, like a clear coat or something, that will help the pain stay on better without giving a glossy shine to it?
