I don't have a Raptor. But I recently purchased a Tristar Viper G2 in a 28 gauge. I only have a couple hundred rounds through it at the moment but so far it has performed flawlessly. The fit and finish is excellent as well. Turkish made shotguns have a bad rap but I believe in the last few years they have started to improve. I compared mine side by side to the weatherby SA-08 28 ga which is also Turkish made and I preferred the Tristar. They are not Berettas or Browning but for a gun in their price range they are hard to beat. I would rank them ahead of most shotguns in that price range.

I would get an Escort before a Tristar.

And if CTD was selling Benelli's for a nickel, I wouldn't buy it from them. I hope that company dies in a fiery bus crash.

Back in 2007 I was a buyer for a gunshop. Tristar had some great deals through our buying group. I loaded up on their over/unders and pump shotguns. Ordered like fifty of them. What a nightmare that turned out to be. Nearly every over/under was returned due to broken firing pins. A lot of pumps were returned for various reasons as well.

They are probably a better product now than they were then, but I won't waste any more of my money to find out. Good luck if you do.

I think your better off dropping the auto loader requirement and taking a step up in brand name for the money..

For instance.. I'd rather have a basic Benelli Nova or a Browning or Remington pump than some cheap azz foreign made no name piece of chit that no one works on and a PITA to get parts for.

There's lots of bird hunters up in that neck of the woods. You can't tell me there isn't some half way decent shops up there that have a used inventory to look at? Pawn shops? check out the newspaper for private sales? 400 bucks should be able to buy you a pretty decent used shotgun of higher quality.

My only other thought was 20ga might be a little light for a goose gun but hey that's up to you.

Look at this.. Buy it now for 409 bucks and free shipping. Looks like these guys are in Minnesota too, you could probably find deals like this at your local gun shop.

What furhunter said. Go with a Remington 870 and call it money well spent.

As a lifelong waterfowl hunter I'll give you a word of advice ..... get a 12 gauge. The 20 is very marginal for geese and limited on ducks. Lots of folks buy a 20 because they expect less recoil. The truth is that they are usually a lighter framed gun and recoil MORE than a 12 gauge.

I should clarify my earlier post. I would rank the Tristar ahead of other budget semi auto shotguns in that price range. However for the money the 870 or the Nova can't be beat. Around here there's a lot of 1100s for sale for 400 or less as well. I do like my Tristar but It is what it is and I would not intend for it to be a heavy use field gun. For the intended use and the budget there are better options. I had an Internet brain fart and typed before I thought.

I already have a mossberg 500 already I just wanted a semi auto purely for duck hunting and to take like maybe 3 chance shots at geese. Any other first hand experiences? Or good cheap semis?

I shot a Charles Daly 20ga Auto for a few years on ducks and was pleased with it. My hunting partner loved it's light weight and talked me out of it and it has done well for him, he does very long jaunts across MT prairies wearing out a couple of dogs a day.

They no longer make the CD and there is no cs for them so I wouldn't even look at one now even for a good price.

That said the Weatherby SA-08 is a up graded version of the same shotgun(parts not interchangeable)with great CS, it would be my choice.

I still use a 20ga CZ sxs for some duck and goose hunting with Hevishot #2's for geese and high speed steel 4's for ducks over decoys.

Weatherby Sa-08.

Once again ... stay away from the 20 gauge. If a 12 gauge bothers you remember that there are light loads available that would still be far better than a factory 20 gauge load.

I bought a Ruger Red Lable 20 guage for skeet shooting. It kicked me so hard I flinched so much, it ruined my skeet shooting. I bought a used 1100 Remington and at least I didn;t flinch when I shot it. Didn't help my skeet game much. LOL

I have a couple good condition Rem 1100s I found for less than 400.

Anybody have thoughts on stoeger? I see them used for 350 or so as well.

Stoeger is worth what they cost .... not very much. They're OK if you only shoot 2-3 times a year but they won't take much more than that. I've actually seen them fall apart (really) on the skeet field.

Waterfowl guns and skeet/trap guns are 2 different animals. I want a really heavy gun to shoot skeet with, not necessarily so much for waterfowl. They get heavy if you have to lug them very far. The best waterfowl gun I have ever owned is still my go to gun ... a Beretta A303. It never fails to shoot even in near zero temps.

When I first started pheasent hunting I bought a Stoeger Condor O/U and it performed well for 3 or 4 years and still does though I rarely shoot it anymore as I have moved on to other shotguns for my upland hunting. I put the Stoeger through some pretty heavy abuse and it did the job just fine and it was fairly well built with decent wood. Then my brother in law bought one a few years ago and his is an absolute pile of junk. The finish on the action is terrible the wood reminds me of particle board and the extractors do not function properly. The safety mechanism has a tendency to bind up on his as well. I think Stoeger is just luck of the draw.

If I HAD to stay with a lower budget and wanted an autoloading waterfowl gun, my search would be for a Winchester SX-1. Built like a tank, shoot great, and are almost foolproof. Find a decent used one and replace the bolt buffer. Then shoot it until your tongue hangs out. They can be had for $300-$400 or even less "if" you can find one.

The Charles Daly is back as part of Samco Global. They started out with the guns as Akkar, the Turkish manufacturer, and later bought the Charles Daly naming rights from the previous company. Parts are beginning to show up for the Charles Dalys. The new gun is upgraded to avoid the broken locking block that plagued the original Charles Daly guns.

I don't know anything about Charles Daly being associated with Akkar, but Akkar is the company that makes CZ's shotguns or atleast the CZ 612's.

I had a Stoeger o/u 20 ga I bought new in the early eighties out of shotgun news(catalog). Was total garbage. Importers will try to (and do) sell any piece of junk they can to make money, then simply rebrand once word is out. I would spend the 400 on a good, used, proven gun. I would also take Hildago's advice about going with a 12ga if your going to be waterfowling.
