New predator rifle form Mossberg

I like the fact it uses AR mags, it would be a nice second rifle for guys that currently use ARs. I will tell you from personal experience it is alot nicer/easier to carry an extra mag loaded, than fumble around with cold fingers trying to load a bolt guns blind magazine....

I also am in agreement that the rifle is too "big bulky" for a dedicated coyote rig. I don't like lugging around big guns.

Mags are AWESOME.

Like said above, fumbling with shells in the cold is a P.I.T.A.!

Especially when your getting in and out of the truck. Way faster to "slap a mag in" then to try and fumble 4 or 5 shells in, when stands are miles apart, and your getting into and out of the truck.

The AR mags are not a bad idea, think of the availability of them, but one limiting factor would be the length of cartridge. In an AR mag, you won't be able to "load 'em long", lets say your using a 77 grain or heavier bullet.

I've seen the .223 do surprisingly well at 1000 yards.

Ask the Marines, or the Army Marksmanship Unit.

Can we get an A-men?

I can see the Coyote Doctor's using this type of rifle with all the prone shooting they do. I can see me liking this rifle for a lot of what I do as well. As for the AR magazine I'm rather indifferent about it. In other words I could care less if it had one or not. Still would like to see this set up in a .243 with a 1:8 or 1:7.5 twist, but I know that is beyond fantasy with production rifles. The new 6.5 Creedmore would also get my attention.

Looking at the rifle, the magzine shown in the rifle, I believe it is actually a 20 round magazine that will not accept anything more than 10 rounds.

A true 10 round mag won't stick out that far...

I'm OK with a 20 rounder.

Not that you would get off 20 rounds, but because you can utilize the capacity like you do with an AR. I know if you shoot a 20 rounder dry with an AR on a stand, then you need to re-think how you are hunting predators.

Hot diggity dog! See there, I KNEW there had to be a logical reason.

Hint...get an AR, SKS, Mini 14, other semi auto and you can miss more faster without reloading.... Best of both worlds.

It's more tactical than varmint/predator. I run a 5 rnd mag in my AR due to bumping a 20 when prone. That also looks like a back gouger when slung over the shoulder. As mentioned it looks heavy too.

Says it weighs 7-10 lbs... about the same as an M16A2 (8.79lbs) with a 30 rnd mag. [beeep] i humped many a mile totin one of them. It aint to heavy.

If I didn't own a predator rifle, I would not make this rifle my "first" predator rifle. However for a guy that has a few rifles it would be a fun one to play with. It would serve a purpose but only under specific circumstances. Would love to have something like it for long range sniping when the coyotes tend to hang up in late winter/early spring.

heh thats a very true statement!

I prefer a hinged floorplate. You can't loose that. Bump the mag release at the wrong moment and now you have a single shot. I don't even mind blind mags. They're a pain to unload, but you can loose em. Just my theory, I guess. As far as this rifle, I think it is cool. A 5-10 round stubby would be, ok. It is tacti-cool though.

Accuracy International Mags??? For .223 rifles??? Boy, I ain't seen 'em!
Have to check that out, of course I usually load 7 in my mags, and Yes, I have had days that I have seen enough dogs to need more than 5 rounds...just not as often as I would like!

Well, I guess not accuracy intl but there are entry of 5 rounders that are rather reliable.

Since no one answered the op ?
I have shot a few of them, when Mossberg was here to test them last month.
They are great off a bench, shoot well, triggers are nice.
On a calling stand, they work fine, but shoot best off sticks, and are alittle heavy to be packing afoot many miles. For walking a short distance they are fine.
I personally don't like a mag that "sticks out", smaller mag would suit me better.
All in all, they are a good rifle, saw many rock chucks shot at 300 to 500 yrds with 3 test rifles we had.(feild shooting, not of a bench).
Not the best choice for a walkin/callin rifle, but they will apeal to some shooters.

Looking at the info, it says this is the "MVP series varmint", indicating to me that this is the varmint rifle in the Mossberg Varmint Predator Series, so maybe they will come out with an "MVP predator" that fits better into the predator category with better mobility and such.

As for the magazine capacity I would love to have the option of a 20rnd mag when I am making the gongs at the range sing, but I would worry about possibly over heating the barrel. As long as it wouldn't burn out the barrel though I think it would be real fun at the range, and it would also make it simple to carry extra ammo on you if it is already in the mag and you just throw another in your pocket if you'll be out a while, or think your going to miss a lot!

I think this rifle does appear to be a little on the tacticool side of things, but I don't hate all tacticool gear out there, and especially tactical rifles.

I like the option of a 10 rder in the gun and a 10 rder in the pack or truck or whatever. Box of shells in 2 mags (or one). Maybe i got OCD

Wish I could see a bigger picture. Someone said that they had a barrel nut. I think these are made for the rockchuck prarie doggers.
