New "BEAR" call

One interesting book to read is Alaska Bear Tales by Larry Kaniut. It is a compliled accounts of bear encounts from Alaska. There is a couple of good tales of black bear attacks. For me the biggest lesson was the story of the 2 kids in Upper Michigan that were out fishing and was stalked and killed by a black bear. I may have been 8 or 9 when I read that story and it was probably in Outdoor Life (Grampa gave his old copies).

One other thing that proves there is no certinty on bear behavior is the incident with a problem sow with a cub. She was trapped in a large culvert live trap. Well the sow was caught but the cub was outside when the door closed. A second smaller trap was set to the mothers trap and left over night. When the cub was handled the sow showed no reaction at all. Bear reactions can run all over spectrum. I don't know enough about bears to read the minor behavioral clues on what they do next.

Bob Mc -

Yes the fact that there are griz around definitely affects how I call all critters except wolf and all outdoor activities as well. It is very difficult staying still while toot'n when you hear some racked in back of you and you know the bears are out. Also I prefer to use my 223 for fox - wolf but when the bears are still out in the fall I tote my 45-70 5 shot revolver along. In tight cover I use my pump sg loaded first two with #4 (for fox/lynx) then follwed by my bear loads of 00 & slugs. Each year year I usually have some sort of unplanned encounter with the beasts.

Now that cub distress call that Rich is tinkering with just ups the chances a bunch. Your 'dales may keep the bears away for the food calls but I'm a betting that they would cause more aggressive behavior in the momma bears (griz or bks) when using the cub call (remember a cub is in trouble) A boar would probably back off as he is attacking that cub and will think the dogs are getting it but momma will be attacking the trouble ('dales)to protect the cub. Would be interesting. Let me know what happens and be sure to film it! Oh and sign a release of liability with Rich before you do this. LOL

Right now I have a turf war going on with a griz and so far I'm loosing the battles. Yesterday he choose not to engage in contest. May be when I'm out tomorrow. But that cub call could be my edge. Rich's version of a star war weapon in MHO. So I want one for the cause.

John,

What could cause more aggressive behavior than a cub up a tree, momma on the ground, and 3 Airedales clamped tight to her butt? Been there and done that. More than once. 'Course I'm not talking grizzly! I really don't expect to see anything that I haven't already seen. Maybe just more often. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

After speaking with a few men who live in bear country and have seen first hand just how agressive bears can become when they hear a bear cub crying, I decided to write up the following disclaimer.

June 23, 2003

WARNING

The Cronk “BEAR” call produces very realistic sounds of crying bear cub. This sound causes very strong protective
instinct to be aroused in female bears. Other bears, including hungry males will come in to eat the crying cub.
Calling wild bear is serious business, and may provoke an attack upon the hunter. We at Cronk custom calls accept
no responsibility for the safety of any person who blows the “BEAR” call in any area where bears may be within
hearing distance.

LOL Rich!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It is kinda said that in this day and age that someone would have to add that kinda of warning.

If you blow it, you take your life in your own hands.

Hello Jesse,
I'll go with ya to call with this thing. One of these days I will get over my aversion to electronic deals and get a few of Mr. Cronks fine calls.
Half the fun of hunting bears is they can eat you.Maybe more than half. I bought a Carlton "Bearcall" had never heard or tried one, I think it sucks. You guys tried one?
Mr. Cronk I look for your posts, thoughful, honest.
Carl

I also have one of Mr Carltons call and I just do not have fun calling with it. Other calls are easier to blow and you can play a wider range of sounds. I like my Primos Regulator 10 because I can go from a mouse squeek to raspy elk in distress. Having to travel 6 hours a weekend while trying to sell my house I had plenty of time to pratice.

I would love to go calling with you. But that sad part is work really picked up here lately. I'm hoping to be in town for the opener though. Right now they have me in Colorado working 15 hour days for 2 weeks. I'm going to be home for the fourth. And it sounds like they might be sending me back here in July, or to Ohio. But they do know that I want Aug.1 off.

Are there Grizz in Colorado. If so where so I say out of that are while I do some calling here in the next week or so. I brought this bear call with me, and Last night at dusk I called in a coyote with it just a little north of Ft.collins. Rich I thought that this call was for bear!!!! LOL
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif It was a good time. I love this call. It is easy to blow.

Cougarbait,
You ain't gonna believe me but the fact that a coyote came to that sound does not surprise me much. I think it was just yesterday that I got around to making an instructional cassette for the BEAR call. In that tape, I mention the fact that bear cub distress is not just a momma bear wwhizzer-off'r. It is also a prey distress sound. The "easy meal" syndrome. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I am glad that you have called something with that call already.
