New shotgun barrel hits the market

That thing is a load of crap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you know anything about shotshells, you'd understand that that is probably the most INACCURATE shotgun barrel ever produced, and they are just playing on people's "COOL" factor to sell it.

Shotshells have a shotcup that carries and cushions the shot. It releases the shot and falls away AFTER it leaves the barrel. Now think about it......the shotcup will NOT have time to fall away until it is at the very least 1/2 way down that "barrel". Wonder which side of the barrel it will be on when it releases the shot? With a 3" exit variation, it could vary from shot to shot over 6"-8" at 25 feet! Not to mention the fact that you have no idea (at this point) what type of pattern it will throw.

That being the situation, you'd have to purchase ammo from them that probably has no cup protecting the shot. Probably like antique shotshells, having only a paper wad under the load.

Buy yourself an old barrel, cut it off to the legal point, and use it to effectively kill an intruder if the situation warrants.

And ANY LEO on here will tell you that brandishing a weapon for the "Fear Factor" is only going to get you killed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Promptly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If you reload there is a product called SPREAD-R that is inserted on top of the shot before crimping the shell closed. It is a finger that goes into the shot and as soon as it exits the barrel the lighter slower finger deforms the shot pattern opening it up 2-3 times more than a standard load.

These are cheap to buy and very inexpensive way to make a very rapidly expanding shotgun pattern with any standard shotgun.

Shotgun shells are also sold with these already installed for those that do not handload.

We have used those in the past. They work BUT......they're marketing this as a home defense weapon, and they won't do much to spread a pattern at 15 feet. There simply isn't enought flight time or distance involved to allow them to work.

A sawed off shotgun makes a great home defense weapon. This is because the shorter the barrel the wider the projectile spread pattern.

The basic premise that the reason for cutting a barrel down is to make it shoot a "street-sweeper" pattern, is flawed. Unless you are cutting off a choke constriction, the only pattern difference you will make by chopping a barrel is in the distance from the muzzle to the target.

In other words, if you cut two feet from the barrel, the pattern will be the same size at 18' (from you) as it was at 20' before chopping. That's because, while the target is still the same distance from you, it's 2' further away from the muzzle. Not a big difference in pattern size at all.

The reason sawn-offs were made illegal is because they are easily concealable. Sawn-off rifles are illegal too, and they have NO spread, LOL.

That thing looks like something we used in college, it had a hose attached to the small end and usually someone was pouring beer into the other. Could be dual purposed.

Might chip a tooth Nick... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif This is just more hipe and hoopla to pry a dollar from an unknowing person, or, some Mall Ninja who buys for the "cool" factor.

I'll bet you don't get any penetration from the shot because it has NO barrel to induce velocity...

May as well throw bb's at em....

make mine an AR with 55's...
