Guys you might have seen my other post a bout a Sako Riihimaki 222 that was given to me by my grandfather.. sweet little gun for sure. This is my first strict predator gun so im not all too familiar with bullet types, sizes and speeds, and what effect they have on fur........Once I shoot up the ammo he gave me with it, ill need to start buying some. Id like to base the bullet selection on fox, since there is plenty of them around. But ill be hunting coyote and bobcat with it as well...id like to add that a shot past 200 yards is going to be an extremely rare thing where I am.

-What grain bullet do you suggest? (I see 35 and 50 for the most part)

-What manufacturer?

-What bullet type do you recommend?

....some choices Im looking at are:
-50gr PPU soft points
-50gr Fiocci Extrema v-max
-50gr Hornady superformance Varmint v-max
-35gr Hornady superformance varmint v-max
-40gr Noslar Varmageddon JHP
-40gr Noslar varmageddon JSP
-50gr Remington Premier AccuTip Boat Tail

***sorry for all the questions guys, im a little overwhelmed with all the choices!!!

40g Sierra HP, 4198, most accurate load will be close to the top of the powder charge, no plastic tips on bobcats and foxes because it will be hard not to blow them up.

With your experience, I would not want to see you start out with Blue Dot loads, so don't go there.

Great rifle!

I've used Nosler 50 gr BT with good success. The powder was IMR 4198 and it shot very well. Killed a lot of varmints with it out to 300 yds. There are some better powders out there but I used IMR 4198 in several .222s and was very pleased.

The varmegeddon are not fur friendly. The vmax is kinda hit and miss in my experience. I'd look for a little more solid bullet in whatever grain and manufacturer your rifle likes. Under 200 your not going to see much of a difference in trajectory I wouldn't think. A tough bullet that your rifle likes is gonna be the ticket here.

For the money you will be hard pressed to beat a 55 grain Sierra Gameking SP. Super little bullet that will do exactly what you want and will outshoot just about anything out there with minimal pelt damage but plenty expansion. Maybe a 50 SP Sierra if your rifle wont shoot a 55.

I use 40 V-MAX in my 24" 1in14 twist 222, extremely accurate at about 3,300 fps. Haven't shot a lot of predators with it, but so far so good. No exits.

I *thought* I had the 40's working well in my 22hornet also, but last 2 foxes have been a mess.

So now I'm also considering other 40 HP's or SP's.

Anybody have any experience with the Berger 40 MEF bullets for fur?

for reloads in my .222s- i use lapua brass, fed 205m primer, i-4198 and 50 ballistic tip. i have used 50 and 55 grain sx horn, 52 speer, sierra and berger.

Well yes and no. One that hardly expands for a "varmint" bullet. For fur I think you want a regular hunting bullet instead of prairie dog bullet.

Price,

I'm actually moving from the heavier bullets down to the Berger 40 gr Varmint bullet for my 222 (and my AR for that matter) in an attempt to reduce fur damage on coyotes. You'll still likely experience exits with these bullets on fox because they're such small critters.

I have 2 Sako Riihimaki's myself and they are 1 in 16 twist rate barrels. For factory ammo they like Nosler Varmageddon 40gr JHP. My favorites for reloads are Sierra 40gr. Blitzkings

My Rem 660 .222 does great with bout any 50 gr bullet. I mostly
use spsx to cut down on damage. I like H322, H4198, IMR4198,
IMR 4064. There are many choices
