Powder suggestions for 22-250?

AR Comp is another one that in my two 22-250 will run 52 gr Bergers really fast. Burns clean stable and when I shot it thru my old shooting Chrony I figured it was wrong(3925fps) and it could have been because when I ran it thru a Magnetospeed it was faster.

I have found that most factory ammo does not chronograph as fast as claimed. Also, remember that just because one bullet will shoot at 3850, does not mean that you're going to find another load that will have the same POI. Anytime you change components, such as bullets and powder, the POI will change. As far as powder goes, My Ruger loves Varget, and I've also used W760 and H380 with good results.

if you are interested in a new powder that is supposed to be as good as Varget..

try out the IMR 8208 XBR. Xtreame Bench Rest (xbr) from the bench guys say that it's temp stable, and very consistent, and meters really well.

I have been waiting for the temps to come down so that i can start working loads up. But, the good news is that it's a new kid on the block so it's on the shelf. Right now all i use is Varget after trying H380 and 4895.

I would also suggest trying the 50gr, or 53vmax, as the BC on the 53 is a lot more than others in that class. I was getting great results from my 22-250 and shocking results in my 223 with the factory loads. I had a 14 twist and it liked the lighter bullets.

I don't chono the loads until i find that sub .5Moa group that I like. Then chono just to find the data chart for my draft drop sheet. I load within the loading ranges and don't care if it's going 3600 or 3900, as long as it's shooting dimes.

One other thing that i feel helps, is a digital scale that measures to the hundredths (.02gr). I found that when i changed to that, my SD dropped to between 10 and 15, which can help to tighten groups up, assuming the bullet and barrel are appropriately matched. So far as i can tell, that is about as low as physics is going to allow.(without spending a fortune to get lower numbers)

Hunter.....

I highly doubt you can push a 55 gr'r that fast without some serious pressure signs, and besides, the accuracy probably wouldn't be anywhere near optimum. I've done a ton over the years with the .22-250 and although I've used some good standard powders like 4064, BL-C2, H380 and H335, I've found that loads in and around the less than maxiumum usually produce the best accuracy overall.

I usually start in the 4-5 grains below max and work up from there in half grain increments. When you start to see a "sweet spot", I break it down to tenths or so and fine tune it.

Best wishes....
Bob

I just got my Ruger 22-250 back from factory. They sent 2 updated clips and polished the throat as it was leaving a scratch on brass. Any way I mounted the scope on the rail and shot 3 holes at 200 Yards that could be covered with a dime. POWDER was 36 gr of IMR 4064 pushing a 50 gr vmax at 3574 fps. I don't know what else a person could want. Rudy

I have post this in past threads
Factory Rem 700 26” Heavy Varmint 22-250 – HS Precision Stock.
Pet Load:
Sierra 55 SBT #1365
34.5 grains of Viht N135
CCI – 200
Remington brass
Average Velocity = 3652fs

Accuracy and terminal performance on Hoosier coyotes is outstanding.

Good shooting –
B..

I am shooting factory rifle as Buck_358,but am shooting same load that Rudymontana is shooting 36 grains of IMR4064 with 50 grain Vmaxs,
this rifle loves this load and has zapped a bunch of coyotes...

I don't shoot 55 grain bullets but I think looking for 3900 FPS out of a 22-250 is asking a bit.

I shoot 52 grain bullets and have found that Benchmark and IMR 4320 give me what I want.

The nice thing about the 22-250 is that a lot of different powders give you good results. These are just the ones I've settled on.

My Savage absolutely loves CFE223 and 55gr bullets. Really small groups. Don't remember velocity from when I ran it through the chronograph. My buddies rifle prefers 4895 with 55gr.

A couple of years ago, I was helping a friend work up loads for a Rem 700 VSSF Stainless with a 26" barrel. He wanted to shoot the 55g NOsler Winchester combined Tec black bullets with win 760 and win primers.

We found a load of 41.5g of 760 in that new barrel that clocked 3850 which was the fastest that I had ever seen a stock 22/250 shoot with a 55g Bullet. The black coating decreases the pressure to where you could get more velocity, is the only thing that I could figure.

SO, I tried the 140g nosler combined tec bullet in my 7 STW, and got 3600 with extreme accuracy, the black coating decreased the pressure.

You speed demons may want to give the black bullets a try.

I have one with a 26" barrel that shoots CFE 223 really fast with little groups, and the other with 22" barrel shoots AR-Comp the same way.
