Predator Hunting in Portland, OR area?

Well its been fun learning the area. I grew up north of K-Falls and know that area real well, and get a little frustrated trying to learn a new area (especially this populated). But I'm still pretty young, so i have time to add another map to the back of my head. Frustrating but fun at the same time.

As for the snow...there hasn't been to much on the main 4610 and 4613 rd North of 224. However, I did take the 4610 rd up to a supposed lookout on Sunday. The weather went from a heavy rain to a blizzard in less the a quarter from wear I made the turn. I was in almost two feet of snow by the time i decided to turn around. With that said, I have been very surprised how little snow is in the mountains this year. Going to try and go back up that road this weekend again...hopefully it will be old snow, and I can see if there is any telling tracks so I can decide to right that place off or hunt it with confidents.

I will have to look into the area you mentioned as well. Like I said, I am pretty much starting from scratch here. I know how to hunt the east side of the state for yotes, but this Valley stuff has been a trip. Love the challenge. Going to have to keep the pelt of the first valley yote I get as a trophy...no matter how shot up it might get.
 
I know the feeling on the west side it's what I hunt pretty much every weekend. When your thinking about going east shoot me a PM, after my last post I was cruisin around on Goggle Earth (you should use it or Bing to pre scout areas you want to hunt)& found a area over by Terrebonne that I used to hunt it had lots of coyotes, man i miss that place.Dave

Now that I have found more time on my hands, due to a recent job change, and that I'm choosing to spend that extra time pursuing yotes, my wife is not to happy. She has already reserved her seat in the truck for my next trip. The girl grew up with a hunting fool as a father, so she should know what she is getting into, but she wants to go along for the ride, and isn't to keen on me blasting any dogs.

Lucky for her, the odds are in her favor that I won't this early into the game. Ugh! Maybe she can hold my beer...or better yet, she can hold the shotgun and I'll hold the AR. This might work out after all.
 
I have enjoyed this read also, Im heading out to Estacada area for the second time here in a few minutes, Im just starting out on learning that area. I thought i would google anything for that area before I walked out the door real quick and came across this thread. I will keep you guys posted on what I come across.
 
Futura, glad to see someone else is wondering through the Estacada area aimlessly. You will have to let me know how you do, or if you find any sign. Wish I could have gone out today, but instead all I have is the forum to keep me occupied while at work.

Well, yesterday was uneventfull. I drove out to the green bridge past Estecada and kinda started from there. I did shoot at a crow with my .223 though lol. I want to head back and check out 4610 Rd. Whats out that way?
 
Well, shoot. I was hoping you might find some good stuff to share.

As for the 4610 rd, I have gone up there twice, and the weather was not great for hunting. I havn't seen any sign up there, though I wasn't totally focused on looking most of the time. Allot of the roads I found were either gated, or blocked, and there is a no shooting zone for the first few miles up the 4610 rd. I have been driving down hwy 224, and head N. on 224 (right across from a small marina. I take the 4610 and hang a left a few miles left (other wise you find yourself on Winslow Creed Rd, which might be good, who knows). I follow the 4610 again until it turns into the 4613, as the 4610 takes a hard right and heads up the mountain. I took this higher rd last weekend, and is where I hit a ton of snow. This might be a good rd to take if there is still snow up there to look for sign. If there is snow up there, keep your eye out for turnoffs, as there were very few for me, and the snow got deep fast...kind of sketch if your not in a 4x4 and have decent tires. IF you stay on the 4613 rd, which takes you North, you eventually hit a paved rd which is the 4614 and if you head west on it, will turn into SE Squaw Mt. rd. If you head east on the 4614 it winds you up to a higher elevation, and there are many unexplored rds off to the sides of that, but most of it looked pretty thick and steep.

Let me know what you find, as I am going to explore a little more south this weekend if I can get some time away from the honey do list.
 
Yeah Im probly not going back out till next weekend, Im going down to Bend to pick up my new .243 this week. Im gonna try and make it down to Fort Rock and play with my new toy while Im there.
 
Ft. Rock is a good place to test out a new toy like that. Havn't been out there for years. I got the ok from the wife, so I'm headed out in the morn.
 
Well, I was able to peel away for a Saturday morning. Ended up going south off 224 over the green bridge on the FS-45 rd. Took that road all the way back west until I hit pavement. Got out and called on one spot, but no luck, especially with the rain. Hit a little snow on top, and saw no dog or rabbit sign. Quite a bit of deer though. Did spot a few places on the west part of the 45 rd that looked open enough to hunt, but didn't have time to get out and scout for sign. Hopefully will be able to go back out that way next weekend to look a little closer. One of these days one of the darn things will run in front of me on the road considering the amount of driving I have been doing.

Futra...I assume you got your new rifle...get a chance to test it out? Curious to know if you got any hunting in at Ft. Rock?
 
I actually got hung up on some other stuff, Im gonna shoot down to Bend this weekend and grab my new rifle. Hopefully get to shoot while Im down there. I'm going to at least zero it. I was being optimistic and bought a couger tag though lol. Yeah down 45 is where im gonna probly start spenind a lot of my time. Check out Google Earth and you can see a lot of area that looks promising. I have been hooked on google earth and messing with my GPS a lot lately.

yep google earth is a great tool to scout with.

The hunting from a boat sounds GREAT! I plan to get myself a boat for chukar hunting ASAP when I get up there.

If any of ya'll can get me a plumbing or construction job I will move up Immediately I can't find any work down here in Los Angeles.

We all gotta get together It'll be a freaking coyote slaughter! you guys got cb radios in your rigs? Nice so you can scout side roads seperately and stay in contact.

I also got the wife who isn't into me whacking the song dogs but I called in a dog within 10 feet of her we just had cameras she liked that. She is always complaining that huntings takes all my free time. Man must of been dealing with this as long as he's been hunting for recreation LOL.

Well as long as when we get together we are not hunting outside of Portland....might be a long day of stairing into the trees.

Been meaning to put a CB in my truck, but haven't got that far yet. Usually just run the FRS handhleds which are hit or miss depending on the terrain. Nothing says blue-collar like a CB bolted to your dash...going to have to get one.

At the very least the other day....I did find some sweet spots to throw trap. Finding everything but good places to hunt yotes...ugh.
 
lol triple deuce, Yeah my gf/ fiance isnt to big on hunting with me either, I just recently got her to watch the Predator/Quest/Pursuit/Nation shows with me. Thats a start though. I have a cb in my truck under the dash and a magnetic antenna, just to f with truckers, but I havent plugged that thing in 10 years or so. SlowDraw, check out the latest issue of Predator X'Treme Brian Downs talks about baiting and gives a lot of tips I wonder about baiting out 45 road someplace.
 
I rarely use the cb since i'm the only hick in LA who has one. Ran into a guy up by bend runnign some dogs we ended up going over to xmas valley to blast jacks at night the cb sure did come in handy.
 
Christmas Valley is my old stomping grounds while I was in High School, my Uncle Gene use to take me out there at least once - twice a week during my freshman year. My Best Shot on a moving target was out there, 300-310 yards on a coyote running in the grass, headshot with an old .222 Savage. My uncle says it was 250 yards, but hey when we were in our teens we always added 25 to 50 yards to everything we shot. Right Guys? Am I Right? .....lol
 
Went out today got snowed on and high winds, had one barking from the other side of the road but never showed up.
crows and an owl were all that came in.
I hate sun-mon days off.
 
called one in on public land today using pup distress in the Evans Crk Unit. Clearcut... used distress for 15 minutes nothing... he or she came charging in as soon as I switched to pup distress. Definately time for vocals.

That was my 4th stand of the day and it was raining.
