I went to buy some basic .22LR ammo, for some target plinking this morning.
When in the heck did it get so darn expensive?

I knew prices for centerfire stuff had got outragous.
But not .22LR!!!

Crimanickally (old-fashioned word, LOL)...I realize it's been a few years since I had to buy any rimfire ammo.
But, heck, the last I bought was Federal 36gr solid points...and the price on the box says $9.99.
And it's a 500 count "brick"!!
I remember buying a box of 50 for .50 cents!
And a 100 count plastic carrying case of Stingers for $1.19!!
I didn't realize that I am so out of touch with reality.

I think the last I bought was 550 pieces for $20 but even thats been a while so I am sure its higher. Oh and that ammo suct. About every 30 rds. or so would be a dud. Remington bulk pack.

The days of the .50$ wildcats and the $8.88 Federal bulk packs from Walmart are long gone. I think my last Federal Bulk pack was $20 at Walmart for 550 rounds. They were hard to find at the time too. It is about to the point that my handloaded 223's are the same or cheaper than my 17HMR's

Welcome to the NEW world of Rimfire. I never used to mess around with rimfire unless my sons and I went to the desert to plink. Then a few years ago, things started taking a turn when the "Rimfire Craze" took over and rifle manufacturers started making better and more accurate "inexpensive" rifles. Heck I remember when you could buy a really nice and accurate Rimfire Rifle for around $100. (Last year I bought a precision target rimfire that cost $1150 and thats only middle of the road these days). Soon everybody's brother was buying a Rimfire no matter how many Centerfire rifles they owned. I'm living proof because up to that point, I had 8 centerfire rifles and one rimfire. Now I have 9 centerfire and 5 rimfires. And because of something called "Capitalism" and "the marketplace", business folks saw this as a new opportunity to make money, not to mention an increase in the cost of manufacturing ammunition. Sorta like remember how much "Diesel Gas" used to cost before everybody started buying Diesel P/U's?

Bottom line is loads of people are buying .22 Rimfires and the new rifles produce accuracy because of much of the ammo that is manufacturered. I use mostly Wolf ammo that costs between $5 - $7 a box of 50 rounds. But my target ammo that I use in my Anschutz Target Rimfire costs between $15.50 - $20 a box of 50. Ain't nothin cheap anymore unless the Chinese make it which is why some folks shop at Walmart. Each to his or her own I guess. Remember one thing, if people want something, most will buy it no matter what it costs. Sometimes you have no choice if you want to play.

everyonce in a while the bulk packs are on sale for around $15 at farm and fleet, i always grab one then. Ive got a few thousand rounds of .22 now.

Just ordered a .22mag, i can only get 100 rounds of that for the price of 550 rounds of 22lr but it can do a lot more and I don't see myself ever going out and blasting off more than 50 rounds at a time with it thats what the .22lr is for.

All of my guns ammo is the relatively cheap calibers. .22lr, .22 mag, 9mm, and 12 gauge. all of them you can get 50 rounds of target/plinking ammo for under $10 per 50 rounds. makes it so I can actually afford to shoot the things. plus when you buy a box here and there you have a supply and it doesn't hurt so bad when you want to go shooting cause the money was spent beforehand

Around here, you can get a 525 brick for $25 at Sportsman's Warehouse on delivery day, but you have to stand in line as it sells out quickly. I still have been able to get it when it arrives.

Don't buy it at $100 a brick. Let them eat it, they will. Remington is opening another plant. BVAC is making some rimfire. I just have a feel it's going to change. Walmart gets the same amount of rounds they always got. People hoarding 80,000 rounds do it because someone on gunbroker will buy it. Don't.

Bought a 525rnd pack of Federal Champion 36gr. HP's the week of Christmas for $31.99 at a hole in the wall gas station. Apparently the memo they were supposed to be gouging on ammo never got to them. Gas was $3.59 a gallon though ironically where everybody else was at $3.09. The one time a full bladder paid off

. Never pay gouger pricing. A local guy is charging $21.99 per 50rnds of 17HMR. I just smiled, shook my head, and walked on. I'll shoot squirrels with my 223rem before I pay that price.

It was only a few years ago when a local drugstore chain in my area decided that they were no longer going to have a sporting goods department and were selling everything in there for 50% off, including ammo. The normally $11 a brick American Eagle ammo was- that's right- $5.50 a brick. I bought 53 bricks of it which was all they had. Feel guilty for buying it all? Are you kidding me?

Loaded it up in the trunk of my Mazda Protégé. On the way home my steering was very light and people coming the other direction were flashing their high beams at me thinking that I had my brights on due to my back end sitting so low. I got home with it and stashed it. Still have most of it too. Good feeling.

Have only seen rimfire ammo 1 time since sandy hook in my area.

I am lusting for a cz 512 22 mag but what is the point with no ammo available?

Don't pay those gouging prices! Big 5 sells a box of 22 mag for 20 bucks now. I will never pay that.

I notice shotgun shell prices are up too. Walmart had a lot of shells but the cheapest was 6.37 a box for federal game loads. A couple years ago they had it for 4.79 on dove opener.

What is rimfire ammo?

At this point I think guns are just clubs. Feeding one is darned near impossible.

I can find 22 mag and 17hmr for 12 bucks a 50. 22 lr doesn't exist here...... well for sale. I might still have a few rounds left in the truck and safe from previous Christmas presents. I know the local scout troop is struggling to find ammo, so a bunch of us will probably chip in if things do not get better by spring from what we have laying around.
