Public school teachers suck

Public school teachers suck. Just throwing it out there. Who wants to face this sad fact?
Go to school, collect your pay and scream for more while you sit on your fat, public [beeep]!

Well, in Texas, they are underpaid, overworked, and have to deal with thugs and sexual predators (happened last week)

So therefore all the good teachers are quitting and looking for a better job. SO what you get for the most part now is teachers who are not as good as what we should have.

And it doesnt help that the katrina refugees in houston are terrorizing the town. My aunt teaches down there, and had a guy threaten to beat her up on his second day of school after the hurricane.

The real problem is there is no accountability or competion in our school system thanks to the NEA. I have known several teachers in the last few years that were very good teachers and they retired just tired of dealing with all of the crap.

I am ticked off at the local teachers who say one thing and do another. There may be a few good teachers out there but I, in the last 31 years, have met 2 or 3.
Most around here dont earn what they are paid right now and they want more!
My son is going to a local school and went to the classroom for help on a certain subject on his lunch hour like the teacher had told him to do in an open house meeting that I attended..
She sent him on his way when he showed up for help.
That happened on more than one occasion.
She stated in the open house that she would help the kids after school and on their lunch hour. This was in a subject that I could help very little at. She turned him away every time he went for help.
This has happened with more than one teacher and more than one subject.
I have no respect for public school teachers as a whole!
The only thing that they are worried about is their current contract dispute and thats it!
What is a school teacher worth anyway? $100,000 a year, $200,000 ayear?????
You are teaching children the basics in elementary school.
Your job as a teacher is to teach the children until they know and understand what you are teaching them.
You dont get paid to motivate, inspire or manipulate children.
Just teach them what they should know at the grade level they are at.

The NEA is poison! Social engineering is their motive with higher pay for teachers on the public dole for more dues for the "union".....

Part of the problem is that the government has a hard time attracting the best and brightest.

School teachers are a visible-to-the-public symbol of a greater problem.

In college I remember going to a career day, and the public school was there offering teaching positions, the police/fire/emt were there, and I think there were some accounting/clerical things there too.

The ONLY positions that were worth consideration were some Wastewater treatment positions. Those positions were compensated quite well.

But figure that in a town of a quarter million people...
The average K-8 teacher gets less $/hr that the guy that delivers pizza.
The average firefighter gets paid only slightly more.

And for that you expect a person to do a rough job with little chance of advancement, in a pressure-cooker of political/bureocratic BS. And in some instance its a Bet-Your-Tail kind of a deal (firefighter-emt-police).

So who do you expect to recruit? You will only find the A/B students if it is their dream and money is not an object. And that's hard enough to do, then just try to retain them. Dreams only go so far.

So you get some C students and they are not outstanding, but they somehow get along well enough to meet the minimum requirements.

So in a way, its kind of unfair, I dont think I get a good bargain with the public servants a lot of the time, but then I stop and think that I suppose Im glad we have people in those jobs at all. Becaue I cant visualize myself doing them given the above.

I graduated from high school in 1964 and at that time there were many outstanding teachers. That is about the time when things started going downhill, remember that God was removed from the public school at that time. Regardless of what many may think, that has precipitated the decline. The ACLU, NEA and leftist politicians in both major parties have hammered away on their socialist/communist agenda for years and we are now reaping the rewards. Its no wonder the home school movement has grown so fast. IMO, the public school system will continue to sink into the abyss of its own destruction. Continued violence, drugs, lack of parental involvement, social engineering instead of education (its indoctrination instead of education), influx of illegals and lack of real disipline will insure the collapse. The only way out is to put the Bible back into the school system where it once was and teach the principles found there. This statement will raise a few hackles. Remember, taking it out sure did not work.

My wife is a 3rd grade teacher of almost 20 years. She absolutely loves her kids. She has poored herself into her job. With new Gov. programs such as "target teaching" and others, they have mostly taken teaching out of their hands. They are forced to do alot of things they know does nothing for the true "education" of the children. The biggest threat to our kids today is the NEA. The unions are absolutely so far left, they do not care if kids can spell, so long as they(kids)think like those of the left, the NEA thinks they are doing fine. My wife and I can not wait for her to retire. One thing that I do not think that anyone has commented on is the parents or illegals. I give a small program to her class every year about trapping and the need for wildlife control, and every year I am amazed at how, excuse me, stupid many of her kids are. Their parents play no role in thier childs education. over the years my wife has come home from parent/teacher conferences in tears because of the behaviour of some of these parents, they just do not care! over the past 3-5 years almost 1/2 of her class at times doesn't even speak english! They removed the programs that used to come and get these kids out of class and taught them "our" language, so she has to pair up bi-lingual 3rd graders to help teach the others. My wife works for the 3rd lowest pay in teacher salaries in the nation, I make as much as her, and she has a masters degree, I dropped out of college. Please don't use a blanket statement about public school teachers. If any of us had to do as much as they do for what they get paid you would have walked out of the job a long time ago. - okeytrapper

Ronald...I attended public schools and for the most part they do suck...BUT I wouldn't make a generalized statement saying it's becuase they work for public schools...There are sucky teachers everywhere(yes, even private schools). I have meet some really great teachers in my time who all worked for public schools. Unfortunately there were more that are "sucky".

There should be higher standards when doing the hiring process. After all, most everyone I know went to public schools...Do we want crappy teachers teaching the majority of our children?

Some of the stuff they are having to put up with;
Parents who want their kid to repeat 1st grade so as to improve their chances in kiddy football and later a college schoolorship (yah right);
Kids get caught cheating, get an F for same, and parents complaint to school board until grades get changed to A's (teacher had no control over those kids after that and quit, if I had to be the one replacing her I wouldn't have put any effort into teaching that class [sit there reading a book the entire class]);
A kid that I know of was getting things like basket weaving 101 because he was such a good wrestler (graduates and can bearly read, not the coaches problem).
And the list can continue forever

Ronald,

This is a prime example of why teaching is a tough profession. You have people popping off without knowing all of the facts, and not walking in the shoes that you are complaining about. Teaching was easier 31 years ago because the majority still had morals and parents made sure of it. It is not like that these days because 90% of the time is dealing with disipline (or lack of) and government mandated BS. However, their is still hope because we still need teachers here in Texas if you meet the NCLB requirements.

So tell me about this discipline it is near non existent in Washington State schools.

Hey Ronald,

Thats a pretty deep thing your "Just Throwing Out There" !! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

First of all there happens to be a couple teachers who post here and I hope they just skip by and dont notice this tread. There are a hell of a lot of GOOD folks out there doing there best with a Damn hard job to do. I wouldnt want to do it . Would you?? Maybe you ought to get your degree and give it a whirl. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The "Sad Fact" is that Yes there are a few bad apples in the bunch. That holds true with every job out there.

I have two fine nieces who happen to teach in the public school system. They break there [beeep] every day working with kids who dont give a sh!!. And they dont make sh!! either!

I have a deep respect for anyone who does a job I would never consider doing, be it a corrections officer, a garbage collector or yes, even a school teacher.

Your the one "Throwing it out there" so expect to get it thrown back!! Try throwing it out here about LEO's or Millitary personel and see what replies you get. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Im really sorry to see such closed minded comments posted on this site. It really takes away from the wonderfull people who post here. INCLUDING THE TEACHERS!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I don't want to get into a full length discussion about this topic, but my wife is a toddler teacher in a daycare, my mom was a school teacher and my sister is a scholl teacher. I think I know a little about the topic, and I for one think that mainstreaming (putting learning disabled kids into a normal classroom setting, with normal kids) is one of the big problems. If there was help for the teacher with these students, then it would be a GREAT idea. However, with no help to the teacher, they can only go at the pace of the slowest student. When you have a kid in the classroom that is at a 2nd grade level, and most of the others are at a 7th grade level, how is this fair to the other kids that want to learn?

There are regional differences also, and certainly pay discrepancies, but this is gonna get worse before it gets better.

What a great statement - NOT. That would be no different than me making the statement that PARENTS suck. Your post is half hearted at best.

I am curious as to why you say this other than the incident(s) you mention in your post.

As with any profession there will be people that are Outsatnding all the way to horrible. The role of the public school teacher has drastically changed since the late 60's (as stated in one of the replies).

School's now....

serve breakfast daily (along with lunch and after school snacks to the latch key students)

are accountable for students test scores (regardless of if the student wants to participate or even shows up)

have the highest population of students per teacher (to keep taxes lower)

teach a longer school day and longer school year than ever before

teachers have to pass not only their college courses but a nationwide exam ($595) to obtain a teaching license. Then to maintain their license they must continually take additional college courses in their subject area (roughly $2000-$2500 every 3-5 years)

the average elementary school teacher spends over $500 per school year for classroom supplies and materials out of their own money (because the school system and students don't have the money)

ETC. ETC. ETC.

I can keep going but it is not worth it.

I will share with you what I share with my students on a daily basis. In life we have those that do and those that complain.

My question to you is - What have you done to make the situation better for you and your child? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I for one am proud of my profession /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif In life we have those that do and those that complain.

My wife taught 7th grade life science for many years....She cannot go anywhere without one of her "Kids" now an their 20's running up and hugging her, telling her how much she meant to them at that time in their life.....she is now the library/media specialist ( us old folks call that librarian) still in the same jr high school.....she is just finishing her masters degree....

Ronald, rash generalizations serve no one.....you were wrong to make such a blanket statement. I understand your frustrations with those teachers, but saying all, or even most, are like that is a travesty. It is like saying everyone who drives a car is an idiot.....simply not a right way of thinking or communicating.

Just my .02, but I am entitled to it, just as you are yours /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seems like the kids are never in school anymore. In service days, early release etc. A full day is a little over six hours. Three months off during the summer, another month for spring break,Christmas vacation, Thanksgiving vacation plus the normal holidays we even get off. All that time off almost makes it a part time job. They should punch a time clock and see what their hourly rate really is. They never seem to mention all the time off when teachers speak of the money they make.

"teach a longer school day and longer school year than ever before"

What about us ppl that have a job that we have to work to pay for gas, guns /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif and stuff we need??????

A longer school day and year sucks bad.

Hourly rate for teachers depending on location, education and experience goes from $16-22/hour. Not a whole lot when most have some sort of graduate degree. The salaries are based on the school districts idea of how much time the teachers are working during the year (regular school days and service days only). These are then spread out to make the monthly pay.

The teachers are at the school doing the paperwork long before and after the school day ends. The summer for a teacher is 1 week before and after the year). The service days are the days they don't teach but have to do education/paperwork/conferences/etc. Spring break is non-existant for a teacher, Christmas vacation is about half of what the kids get, Thanksgiving is Thursday and Friday.

Another thing, if the parents would take a little more responsibility for the children they made and how they are brought up teachers might be a little better able to educate them. Some parents don't want their kids with 90 IQs labeled as special ed because it might hurt there feelings, even though they would be better off in the long run. The parents need to make there children responsible for there actions too instead of blaming it on teachers and school just because their kid is a screw-off, lazy or (fill in the blank).
