Range report, Long range gong shooting.

any experience with 1in 7 twist?
I was chatting with a fello a few hours from me that sells
Shillen Barrels and will do the AI and install!
I am just not so sure i want to say bye bye to 55gr V- Max forever lol dang I have takin a lot stuff with that load lol
but ...if you don't try new things you can get get stuck in a rutt!

8 twist is great in 223. I've had great groups using 40, 50, and 55gr. V-maxes in my AR with 8 twist and it's supposed to be more for the heavies. 8 twist is about as versatile as it gets IMHO.

yes, and I think that if I go with a 1 in 7" that i would miss the versatility of the little bullets!

very confused lol ...going to have to make up my mind though and ...bite the bullet soon (pun intended)

Jonathan,
Here is a group fire forming brass 8 twist with 52 gr Amax.
3 shots @ 400 yards.

If you want to go from 50 -75 gr bullets I'd go 8 twist.
I'm not sure about the 75's in a 9 twist, but it will work well under 75gr for sure.

crap!!! thats awsome Tim, I am thinking you are right as others with the 8 twist...I only asked about the 1 in 7 because he has them in stock and will cut the A.I and install it for free!!! but I am going to wait till he can get a 8" twist or have to go with some one who can!
as this is my primary g-hog and coyote ..long range small bore ....it's not a mater of life and death..it is far more serious! lol

Not exactly! You can always shoot shorter bullets.
But you should not use a faster twist than needed for the longest bullet. An 8" twist will handle 80 VLDs and it is unlikely you would ever shoot enything longer. They do make 90s but they have not been doing well and most who tried them have abandoned them.

Thanks Jack, Tim.. I am being pulled (draged screaming like a two year old) into the A.I light as well lol I am just not liking the unfriendly shipping to Canada thing!! man it makes it hard!

I got to find the right barrel..and more importantly I have to find the right smith to first A.I the chamber and then install it to my action! ...ummm with out screwing it up or costing me more then it would be to go out and buy another gun and mount my optics on it!

I hear that.
Good luck on your quest and keep us posted.

You could call/email Pac Nor and talk with Penny about the export thing. I'm sure they have done it.

BTW, I've had 2 Shilen barreled rifles too, shooters aswell.

Thanks Tim,
I am going to do a little home work on this one as the gun is still shooting MOA with very carefull loading!
I still have some time..and besides I want to wake some g-hogs with the 45-70 this year anyway ..hmm 400-500gr pill moving at 1200-1700 fps wow! some buddy's going to get hurt
real bad lol

Tim,
Yes a range with steel and live targets !

Rifle came out great, other than it's a little picky on brass prep. But it shoots well so I'm happy !
Thanks.

I think I know why you didnt do well with the scatter gun Tim, there was a distraction on the course. You need to work on your focus. lol
