Reasons to buy a 22 mag??

I can tell a huge difference on a fox, on a beaver, pigeons, squirrels, coons and opossums. Not a slight difference. A HUGE difference.

Not at 125 yards it isn't at 300 and I'm betting that considering you have a .22m that you haven't shot enough, if any, game with the Velocitor or the Aguila Interceptor to know what the new .22lr ammo is capable of. I notice a big difference in those too over run of the mill .22lr. Don't worry, if I still had a .22m sitting in the corner I'd take it when game got a little bigger too but no way am I gonna drop down some cash on a new gun and won't advise the OP to do that either. I hear Winchester is also coming out with hyper velocity 40gr. .22lr ammo too. Can't wait to try some.

anything a .22 can do a .22MAG can do better!

Highly under-rated round. I like shooting Fed. 50 Gr. HP's.

1 shot coon kills....no playing around ....dead. Try that with your .22 consistently.

I have been convinced by use on game....not targets.

It's not considered the "poachers choice" for no reason. (not to degrade the round ...just the illegal user).

Chris Brice is right about the Aguila ammo. It's within 200 fps of standard 22 mag 40 grain ammo, but its a 30 grain bullet. I have done alot of side by side .22 LR comparison on PD's. But I have to say that the 22 mag can pull the same tricks. Hornady 30 g. Vmax 22 mag ammo is much flater and faster then standard 22 mag ammo. I have a 702 plinkster that shoots the Aguila Hyper Velocity @ 1750 fps in a semi auto rifle. Its a squirrels worst nightmare out to 75 yards. Theres is a use and purpose for all the rimfire rounds mentioned in this thread, or they wouldn't be on the market...

I love the round. Had one in one form or the other since I was in high school.
The Henry in the pic is my current one, but I just ordered a Single Six with 22WMR cylinder to try this year. I'll still carry the lever gun just in case though.

If ya just want one for plinkin, a lever gun will sure bring out the kid in ya.

Fun for whackin Gophers too.

I think you need one.

Dont want to get off topic, but is that a German Shorthair pointer with the Cur dog?

Yea,,,, She ain't much of a tree dog, but those two are a great team.

I do however know an old trapper who's GWP trapline dog is a Coon treeing machine. LOL

Here's a pic of her and my Cur dog getting their bark on with a trainer Coon.

I've also got an old worn out GSP male that spends his free time treeing Squirrels here on the property.

Turns out those German dogs really are versatile after all.

OK,,, enough of that.
Don't want to poop this party so lets get back to the facinating discussion about the abilities of a 22LR for Coyotes and Cape Buffalo.

I would think that shooting pigeons with a .22Mag would keep me entertained for about...FOREVER!!! HAHAHAHAA that has to be some fun right there!

There are so few squirrels out here that when I do see them when hunting they get a pass. I found a spot for beaver recently so I may bring my Marlin 925M along and give it a try.

I have shot a .22 magnum since 1970, it is my go to gun for calling raccoon. Very accurate round tat packs a good punch at reasonable distances. I have also shot some long range crows with it too.

Sorry my bad...

I can't sing the praises enough for the 22 magnum. The 22 mag has been under utilized as a small game and varmit round. With todays new loads , sales should be up. The great Winchester 61 pump in 22 mag would be the
last gun I would ever get rid of. I wish Winchester still made them.

I have hunted with the 22 Mag for about 10 years now and really like it. It hits much harder than my 22lr. I use it for varmints and meet hunting. The FMJ loads kill very well and I do not loose much too any meet (grouse, rabbits). The expanding loads blow varmints up just fine too. I have a 223 that comes out for long range dog hunting but that’s about it. The 22 mag is my go to gun for general use small game hunting/ fun plinking. I use a Ruger 77/22 mag and a Savage 24 in 22 mag/ 410. If I could (can’t in WA state) I would hunt deer with it. It is a mean, very versatile sleeper round. Get one and never look back. Good Luck!

I have been back and forth with the .22 Magnum. I love it for a while, and then I don't. Then there are times that I realize I could load some blue dot rounds for the same price that a box of $50 .22 Magnum rounds cost.

I really like the rimfires. Out of all of them I like the .22 Magnum over the rest.

Ive shot them all into wet news paper at 50yds. and the CCI Game Points blow them all away! Ive chronoed the Game Points and got close to 2,000fps factory spec gives the game points 170ft.lbs at 100 yds!
Ive been shooting them now for 8 months, killed 2 coyotes a big coon, crows, and a truck load of squirrels and I think there my new go to round for the 22 magnum. You guys should give them a try.

i have had a marlin 25MN in 22 mag for YEARS, it still shoots the tacks that hold the targes to the board out to 75 yards. i keep it above the cabnet for critters around our place, coons, possiums heck my wife even killed a skunk in our yard with it!! i have taken a bobcat with it and even shot hogs and cows for butcher with the same rifle.

i would never be without it around. just the right punch for a clean kill out to 100 yards on anything less than 50 pounds. accurate as i am, not hard on the ears when ya just gotta take care of something and you dont have time to put plugs in.

i love mine, shoot CCI hollow points in it and you wont be dissapointed!

I think I am going to drop some cash on a new marlin xt-22m sometime after the holidays. But that depends on wheather or not I can fix my johnny stuart pm-3. If I cant fix it i'll have to use the money on a foxpro.

Thanks for all the replies. I learned a lot about the 22wmr through these posts.

I just ran across this thread. CDBHunter I see you are in Maine. I used to live up there many moons ago. Back then the 22WMR was legal for deer hunting. I have taken deer at 125 yards with my Ruger77/22 mag. Behind the ear shot DRT
I have also killed several feral dogs in Georgia. One of the dogs was a 100 plus pound wild Rottweiler mix. I am an avid squirrel hunter. I dearly love my 541T for squirrels but if I'm tree rat hunting where there is a heavy population of coyotes my go to gun is without question the Ruger 22 magnum. Out to 100 and a bit further with head shots it is deadly.
