Recommendations 22 LR Pistol To carry

Hey all,

I'm in the market for a new 22 LR pistol to carry on my side when hunting. I have never owned a 22 pistol before so I'm looking for your ideas. What do you like, what do you dislike. My dad had a Ruger Mark of some sort and it seemed to shoot pretty good. a 4 or 5" barrel would be fine for me. Just something to have for fun and to finish off an animal once in a while.

I own plenty of other pistols (1911's, glocks, etc) so I'm not new to pistols, just never had a 22 LR before.

Thanks guys.

That seems a little fancy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the recommendation though!

I recently purchased a SigArms Mosquito. It's 90% the size of a Sig P-226 with normal Sig operating controls, and the one I have shoots to point of aim at 12 yards.

So far its been 100% reliable with eveything I've shot in it and I am totally sold on it's performance. I also own a stainless Ruger 5" bull barreled auto, and a Walther P-22, and I like this pistol much more than either of them.

Yet, all three would be good choices depending on what you're specificaly looking for.

Just my thoughts. - BCB

I have the ruger Mk2 competition target currently, and couldn't be happier with it. I have shot many of the ruger .22 semi auto pistols and in my experience they all shoot great. I guess you can tell by now, that I'm trying to steer you toward the ruger. You would love it, especially with all the mods that can be done to them, if you are so inclined to do so. Good Luck

I have a S&W M-622 with a 6 inch barrel!
This is the most accurate 22 pistol I've ever fired!
It weighs 23 (or maybe it's 26) ounces!
It has never jammed and it's a pleasure to shoot!

When I bought it, the dealer packed up 6 semiauto's for me to try and this was the 3rd one I shot and it's the one I went back to!

My brother has a S&W M-422 with a 4 inch barrel!
It's very accurate too!

I also got a Sig Mosquito. Its accurate for a handgun. I had to find the right ammo, but now it shoots great and no hiccups. It also has a good finish that should hold up after going out to the field, being sweat on and getting all dusty. But being holstered and unholstered will probably show just like any other handgun. Its a slick little gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

The best for the money would be the Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark2 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I carry my 4inch Colt Woodsman or my 5 inch Smith&Wesson Model 41. My 22 Pistols.

Love my Browning Buckmark 5.5. Bull Barrel with full length scope rail if you want to use it. Iron sights if you don't. Great shooter and easy to care for....

I've got a Walther P-22 that I use for that purpose... very small, points nice, has finished off many 'coon and 'yotes on the line for me. Shoot 'em all and buy what ya like /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here in PA we can only carry revolvers when we hunt. So I use the ruger super single six which is 22 cal and has a cylinder to convert it to 22mag. very inexpensive, very accurate and alot of fun. I also enjoy just taking it out and hunting with in in the 22mag configuration.

Just a thought

Another vote for the Ruger MK II. Although I'm currently in love with the MK III Hunter...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have a Browning Buckmark. Great handgun. Very reliable and accurate.

Loaned it to a family member for a backpack trip, it rained on them for a week and it wasn't cared for. It came back badly pitted and rusted. The internal workings are a-ok though.

I guess it depends on how you plan to use it. You going to actually hunt with it or just finish off wounded critters. I have a Mark ll Ruger, and its a great gun but not necessary if your shots are going to be at 10'. A good rule is to get the best you can afford.

The discontinued S&W 422 and 622 are nice, especially if you want an ultra lightweight gun.

The Browning Buckmarks are very nice, and the controls mimic the 1911 if you're future plans include one of those.

But a stainless Ruger MKII can't be beat for a knock around .22 handgun. I have a 6 7/8 inch tapered barrel target model that has taken untold numbers of coons, also a few bobcats and even a possum or two. It's been dunked in creeks, rivers and ponds, packed full of snow when I fell into a snowbank, and generally abused in every way imaginable. It is very easy to shoot well, and I don't remember it EVER jamming.

I carry a 6" S&W 617 Revolver with it's 10 shot capacity in stainless. Very nice shooting and I see that it's now also available in a 22 Mag version. Revolvers give you the chance to better use the BirdShot rounds that most autos won't cycle with. For just carrying I usually load 2 or 3 birdshot, 3 to 4 hollow Points and follow it up with 3-4 solids or high velocity. Also I like longer barrels than some of the short autos because it gives a better sight picture.
