Remington 260 Build

Been looking into finally building a semi custom rifle and having choosen the 6.5mm as something that looks pretty good, plus its a caliber that I dont have yet.

I have never really looked into the process of a custom build and will be reading as much as I can. Looking to hopefully keep everything under $1500-$2000 with glass.

So any insight will help

Thanks

Not sure. I have a rem 22-250 and rem 243 both model 700s that I could use but more than likely I will be starting from square one. Open to any actions though 700s are the staple in the safe.
The gun will be used to punch paper and hunt with. Looking for something on the medium weight side. I reload and pretty sure I can work something out that will work. Just need to know the steps in building. I have no clue what the steps are.

I always check Sportman's Warehouse (other probably have them too) for the Remington ADL package deals. They usually run about $430 for the complete rifle/scope. Strip that bad boy down and sell everything but the action. Gets the cost down to about $260ish for a brand new action. Not bad IMO. Go grab a .308 or 243 and you will be set for the .260.

Find a gunsmith you like and discuss what it is you want. Start gathering a barrel, stock and BM. Probably need to decide what you are going to use the gun for and it will help answer a bunch of other questions as well.

$1500-$2000 is not "custom" kind of coin, it'd be hard to hit those numbers with a bare remmy build from an unknown.

Good news though, that $1500-$2000 will get you a decent scope, mount, and base for one of your other rigs.

Have you considered doing this with a Savage action? If you are semi mechanically inclined and capable of paying close attention to details, you can build it yourself and save a good bit of money.

x2

I went to a long range rifle shoo this weekend to feel out what people are using (as recommended by a member here) He walked me around and introduced me to everyone and told them i was looking to build my first long range rifle. 90% of them said to start with a savage and go with a 6.5x47 barrel. They said you could have a tack driver for under $2000 before glass. The guy with the highest score on previous shoot had just this with a vortex PST on top.

I was going to bring up Savage earlier. I spent $1200 on my Savage 260AI, but it was built off a brand new target action so I needed a spendier large shank barrel also.

Could do a real nice hunting rig for under $1000 I'm sure, though prices have gone up sence my last rifle. Savage action, Criterion barrel and just say a H-S Precision stock is a simple build and gunsmithing is not needed.

My 260AI with a 30" Criterion barrel and Nightforce optics has given me honest 1/4" groups at 300 yards. I spent about $2200 with a used Nightforce scope, and I've shot in the top three at a couple matches, great for a beginer.

Talk to Jim Briggs of Northland Shooter Supply. I am lucky enough to have him as a neighbor but he is very friendly and helpfull. His number is 763-682-4296.

It can be done , you just gotta shop around for deals.

What stock do you want ?

This will be in budget if you are comfortable with doing it yourself and understand a go/no-go gauge set and the basics of rifle construction. Drop a decent Vortex on it and some good rings and bases and you might make your price point. You'll not likely get back what you have invested in it though because anybody can do this. Investment aside, it is an economical solution that is user tunable. I know of two M10 target stainless actions that sport McGowen 260 barrels and Savage laminate stocks. Both are good shooters. One is Accu-triggered and the other Rifle Basix. One a 24" the other a threaded 28".

This will get you a heck of a nice rifle, ready to shoot when you get it, but you will only have enough money to maybe get a box of ammo when done. You will have much better quality and resale though. I've not seen a bad shooting Cooper. Ask Santa for rings and a scope.

While I like my rebuilt M700, I don't see your $2k price point happening with good optics and a fairly decent spec sheet. Then again, you could find some good deals if you are willing to wait and know the right people to do the dirty work.

I am willing to look into any type of action. I have mostly 700's. 243 and under plus a few 30 caliber 700's.

Looked at some savages. I guess I would just be buying a new gun for the action and then getting a barrel, stock, trigger to complete the build???? I have no clue so sorry for the questions if they seem basic.

all of the guns in my safe shoot around 1/2 inch groups. all are capable of better if I do my job. I have been reloading since I was 12 and have fun trying to figure things out. I did my own trigger work on my 700's so I know a little bit about guns in general.

This is more of something that I have never done and want to keep expanding my knowledge of guns. The 6.5mm seems to have a great BC for bullets and I think will make a great 600-800 yard gun to have fun with. I would be using this as a hunting/paper gun so need weight to be somewhat reasonable.

Thanks for all the insight - I would like to try and get everything done within a year time frame

Thanks

Yes sir you do know him Tim, and yes you do need to come down. That was a B-L-A-S-T!!! Jeff set me up and I shot 1023yds!

Anyway, I would recommend doing anything you can to go and check out whats out there before you jump into it. See what people have done, and how its performing to best see what fits your needs and budget. I went from wanting a big budget large caliber custom to taking my 700 22-250 and possibly rebarreling it for heavies.

ask questions non stop and check out everyone else stuff to make your decision. I don't know about you guys but $2k is a TON of money to me and I want to spend it diligently.

There are some guys that will sell you all the parts you need seperate. No need to dismantle a rifle, even though that may still be your best deal.

This is Northland Shooters Supply inventory list and prices. I didn't look too hard but I didn't see stocks for sale.

At least you can see some pricing for a custom savage.

I had a local gun smith put the barrel on my action for $40-$50. The rest of the rifle a 10 year old could put together with a $10 tool set.

Right now I am leaning towards a 260, 260AI or a 6.5X284 as the possible build. I am going to try and find a used/new stevens action or a 700. Is there much of a problem using a used action since I am going to get a new barrel.

Once the action is found I guess I need to figure out what barrel to get. I want to keep the total weight under 10lbs. Any suggestions. Do barrels come ready to install or do I just get a blank tube and have someone ream it to the caliber and twist rate I want.

In the mean time I might just go ahead and pick up the glass so I can use it on my other rifles and get use to it.

Thanks

How bout finding a Mauser and doing your buil off it. I did a 308 on a K98 I got from a pawn shop for 125 bucks. Everything is cheap to buy for mausers after the barrel.

Here's my 260. It's a remmy long action and a shilen barrel. It's 28" long and as it sits weighs 17.2lbs. It's got a full 1-1/4" barrel though
