Remington 700 SPS...changing stock?

New member
Picked up a new one last night. Straight SPS model ( non varmint) with a 24 inch barrel and in 243 caliber.
Right out of the box I hated the all black bolt and this morning buffed off the black "shake and bake" finish so that it appears similar ( except no bolt jeweling)to my VPS 700. BUT...

The plastic stock is WAAYYYY too "thin"..?..."narrow"..?? whatever you might call it up front on the forend for my taste and today Ive been checking out laminated wood stocks online. Dont want no "thumbhole" stock nor any Halloween colored laminate...just "wood colored" lamination s. Light and dark wood colors preferred.

So..the big question is this. How "drop in" is "drop in" anyway. Boyds has some great looking stocks at great prices and Stockys do to with the addition options of pillars of a solid AL bed installed..? ( not really sure I need either actually...Im not looking to get 3 rounds in one hole at 100 yards....just a nice tight group is all.

Anyone had any dealings with either company ..or.. anyone ever had any brand "drop in stock" they had no problems with at all.

I have delt with stockys with fine results. Sometimes a drop in stock requires a little fitting but if you have basic hand tools you will have no problem.

I fully understand the so called advantages of BOTH pillars and of an Al bedded action...but I just dont think I NEED the accuracy such MIGHT give me. All the B&C stocks I have seen are all "plastic"...and I just dont care for the synthetic stuff much as all....hence am looking at some brand..??...of wood laminate.

I could go with one of Stocky's "Bobby Hart AccuBlock Heritage Classic" stocks in Tawny Brn or Granite Grey...if I new I wasnt going to have to work off pounds of sweat getting my action to fit properly...???
 
If you look around you can buy a factory gun with a jeweled bolt and a lam stock.

Since you already have it,you could find a Rem factory or Boyds lam stock and have it drop in. Many classifieds on the net with these for sale.

Thats exactly what Im trying to do but my main question was / is ....just how "drop in" is "drop in". Ive seen 45 ACP parts for 1911's that were perfect fits and some that wasnt even close to working correctly...as an example.
 
I've bought several laminate stocks from Boyds, and they are mostly drop in fit. Sometimes it takes a little fitting on a not so popular stock. But for a Remmy should be truly drop in.

That is what I was thinking. And what I would go with.

Boyd's stocks SUCK IMO. Some of the worst inletting I have seen has been on Boyd's stocks..........

I hate the plastic stocks! Far too many make a rifle look like some WW5 weapon and most are too flimsy in the forend.

That combo looks pretty good to me...but an all black weapon...with a black stock....Yuck. leaves me cold.

BTW...one thing I noticed on mine is that the floorplate is PLASTIC!! No "AL"...but plastic. That'll get replaced for sure.

The B&C stocks are not plastic, believe me. I went to one on my SPS VS. If you can bend that stock you'd have to be superman. The beauty of a synthetic is you don't have to worry about scratching it, and it will not swell with humidity like a wooden stock.

The B&C was a very simple drop in for me. Don't think it took 5 minutes to do. I'm totally satisfied.

The B&C has the pillars. I'm totally happy with it. Here's the only picture I have.

If you'll notice the word "plastic" is in quotes and used as a generalization. If it isnt "plastic" then its got to be "wood"....:)

Believe me or not..there are TRUE plastics that your rifle cant even shoot a bullet thru...and yes..THEY ARE plastic.

I dont worry about scratches to start with...Ive got O/U bird guns here that Ive had since 1985 with nary a scratch in their beautiful wood....and GOOD stocks ( wood) dont absorb water if they are properly sealed....and KEPT sealed....but its true that "plastic" stocks are waterproof.

Im not familiar with the "SPS VS" model...but my straight SPS is nothing to brag about accoutrement-wise for sure.. But its definitely fixable.

Here is my Rem SPS Varmint with a B&C Medalist fully adjustable stock. It was about a 2-3 minute swap and well worth it. It drives tacks now! I did not like the flimsy and cheap factory stock that came on it, plus it was not very accurate with it. I also adjusted the factory trigger to a lighter pull and so far I really like it, but I do hear of alot of complaints about these newer triggers. Someday I might splurge for a new Jewell or Timney trigger! The only downside to this B&C stock is that the total weight of this gun has increased substantially from the factory weight, but for now I don't mind the extra weight when considering the accuracy of the rifle!
