Remington 700 VTR Rebarrel?

I have a VTR in 243. Haven't shot it all that much, I bought it on impulse and have since realized I'm not crazy about the barrel and especially dislike the brake, and am kinda thinking on selling or re-barreling this year. Its the only Rem I have and already has a Timney trigger in it.

I don't need to do anything anytime soon, but with long lead times I might go ahead and order a barrel in the near future if I decide to do it.

Any suggestions on twist rate, which barrel maker?

You know, while some have favorites they really are all good. I have a Shilen, Hart, Douglas and a couple Benchmarks and every one of them shoot and are a significant upgrade from a factory barrel.

If your going to stay with the 243 you could do a 9 or 10 twist and be good to go.

Personally, I like Krieger barrels but there are several good barrel makers out there.
As far as twist rate, that depends on what grain bullets you want to shoot. You can probably find a 1-8 twist on the shelf somewhere but you'll need to shoot between 95-105 grain bullets.

My bud bought one of these. Last I heard, Karl at Kampfeld already cut the brake off and is doing some other work to it......

Well, mainly 87 grain vmax, 95 berger, 100 sp bullets for deer possibly, although this wouldn't be a primary deer rifle. The factory twist is 1 in 9 1/8", I believe. I hate to go slower, but don't know that I need 1 in 8.

My gunsmith seemed to be mainly into Shilen and Krieger, just said Krieger takes longer. But I wouldn't be in a hurry or anything.

The barrel will probably shoot great once you get rid of that break. My brother in law has one and it is just uncomfortable to shoot.

Cutting the brake off occurred to me, I guess a 20" barrel is long enough. I don't know if that would make me like it though. I'll have to always remember this one as a cautionary when I feel like impulse buying something.

Even at 20" the 87 grain bullets should be moving around 3,000 fps.

With the bullets choices you named the 1-9 twist would work good for you.

If you decide on a 1-8 twist, here is a link to a supplier that try's to keep Benchmark and Krieger barrels in stock.

I chopped a 700 in 243 from 24" to 21.5". Standard barrel.

A shorter, but heavier and stiffer barrel would worry me not. 87 gr V-maxes ain't picky........

I'm gonna think on it over the weekend. If I do buy a barrel, I'll probably try a Kreiger, as I'm in no hurry.

EDIT: Scratch that, 11 months wait at Krieger. Not in a hurry, but that's a bit much.

I wouldn't wait that long for any barrel. For me the best ones are the ones in stock that I can have next week.

I agree but not sure who would have a 6mm, 1-9 twist in stock.

I don't mind waiting, but not 11 mos. Lilja and Pac Nor both do 9 twist, 14 weeks out. Shilen about the same lead time, but no 9 twist listed. Douglas has shorter lead times I think. For my purposes I doubt I would go wrong with any manufacturer, but do ya'll recommend one of these over another?

Benchmark does an 8 twist and you could shoot anything you wanted with that. I've got one on my 6x47L Tac rifle and its a great shooting barrel.

There's a few in stock at the above link depending on the contour you want. You might just call them direct to see what they have.

I called them this last summer looking for an 8 twist 30 cal Remington varmint contour barrel to use for my Blackout project I was doing. Not a common barrel in that twist but they had one on the shelf. I was a happy camper!

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm leaning towards doing the rebarrel, I'm gonna research the 8 twist. I already have a savage 243 9.25 twist, so I should do something different. I guess the 8 would work well for 85 gr up to 105s?

And for in stock barrels, it seems like most of what I saw last night were target type heavy contours, ill stay in the medium- heavy sportier range, a 3-4 contour 22-24". I don't want to get too heavy to carry.
