Second that. My SPS Stainless Varmint in 204 I bought this summer shoots well: I shot two 1/2" center-to-center groups and two 3/4" groups on the same target with 39 Sierra's. Mine has the new trigger. I adjusted it with ease and it's light and crisp.

I will admit, sometimes 700s require some minor "tweakings", as I know them well. For your "efforts" however, you end up with a better rifle IMO.......

2MG, its best to just let guys like that go to think what they want. Everyone is born ignorant, some just better themselves with knowledge and intellegence. I have nothing against Savage, I just get tired of hearing how everything but Savage is junk.

If this is so unbelievable to him i'd be willing to bet that the Remington's he's owned shot alot better than he ever will

My last 700. A VTR chambered in a 204.

Here's a couple of 5 shot groups with Midway Dogtowns-cheap bullets. They may look like 3 shot groups but they are 5 shot groups

The only thing I did to this rifle is to lighten the trigger pull. I have 3 700's now with no accuracy problems. Dave

Yeah, I know. I've owned both, and the majority of each have shot very well. None better than the other. Still prefer the 700 action over the Savage action.......

I have been coming onto these websites for several years now, mostly just reading what folks have to say, but on occasion, I do comment on things. There seems to be a group who seems hellbent on trashing Remington, and more specifically, the Model 700 rifle. This group very seldom, if ever, compares Remington with, say a Browning or a Ruger, it's always a Savage. They are constantly telling us how all you have to do, is buy a Savage rifle, take it out of the box, and without doing a single thing to it, it will automatically shot quarter inch groups, at 500 yards...no less. Now, I'm an old goat, and I can remember when, except for the Model 99, most all Savage products were cheaply made and looked and shot the part, as well. About 25 years ago, I used to help some of the locals with such matters as putting on a scope and sighting in their rifles, as I had a farm and a place set up to shoot. A lot of these rifles were Savage 110's, and to get to the point quickly, although they would shoot well enough to kill a deer, the rifles were, to be honest, a piece of crap. Now, I'll be the first to say, it's your money and you can spend it as you like.....on women, cars, clothes, guns, and whatever else strikes your fancy. And I also know, that these websites can turn someone who has never shot anything but a BB gun, into an "expert", who claims to own one of every kind of gun ever made. I never see a post where some Remington fan is running down Savage, or any other brand. We fans of Remington and the Model 700, know that we own and shoot the best selling bolt action gun ever made, and we don't have to resort to running down another brand. I also know, because I have an FFL and sell some guns, what reason a lot of guys give for buying a Savage....it's cheaper than other bolt action rifles. I guess that's why they then say Savages are better than Remingtons, it makes them feel better, because they couldn't afford a more expensive, and better rifle. I'm sure this post will step on a few toes, and I could care less. I'm just tired of hearing the Savage crowd constantly crowing about how much better their rifles are than Remingtons, when anybody that knows anything about guns, knows better.

Some people just have to stir the pot, 2much.

I am sure Savage makes a great gun, and I have heard good things about them.

But I'll stick with my model 700's.

Kymail, isn't funny how they all have to compare themselves to Remington?

i bought one last year ,shot three shot groups perty much touching right out of the box,, the trigger was decent on it but i had it tuned down and the only problem ive had is the lips on the mag thing is straching up the cases

Good post, I agree. I've no reason to put down any brand, I just tell my own experiences with them as accurately as possible. I've nothing against Savage rifles, but they are no more accurate out of the box than a 700.........

Unfortunately, scratching brass has become a common problem, of late, with 700s. Had to address the issue just the other night on my new SPSV......

I bought a 700 tactical .308 with the Hogue stock. The Hogue stock SUCKED!!!! I was shooting 3-4 inch groups at 100yds. All I did was change the stock to a Bell and Carleson and it now shoots sub MOA groups of 5 at 100.
I love the new trigger. Crisp, clean.

That is an issue with every sps I've had through the door. The lips of the feed ramp are sharp. Won't hurt anything but very easy to smooth them out

I have several 700s in different calibers and there is not a bad one in the bunch. The worst one will still shoot better than I can. We have become better informed over the years, I can remember sighting in a deer rifle years ago, we would set an old bucket at a good range, unknown of course, and if we could hit it two out of three shots we were good to go. Now if we can't get half to three quarter inch groups we think we are cheated. We are very lucky to have as many good products available as we do today.

Picked up an sps in .223 and a BDL tactical in .308. Triggers were done before I got them. The SPS shoots good, Factory is around 1-1.5". The .308 shoots great. It loves 150gn HDY SST's. HDY Factory ammo was shooting sub MOA and I worked up a load shooting clover leafs. Love mine...

Sorry I stepped on some toes didn't know you remmy guys was so insecure. But please don't even go there on the Savage vs Rem deal it just too funny. I made a comment that I thought someone might get a chuckle or two out of but I guess it was a little to much for some of you to handle. I have been following these remmy threads and from exploding guns to blaming ammo manufactures and to receiving half of what you paid to falling out extractors sucky triggers scratchy brass falling off bolt handles need to tweak it before you shoot it change the stock change the trigger free float it and on and on and on. Fix these things and at the end of the day you will have a shooter that tomorrow you can shoot little bitty groups ALL DAY. Or you can just buy a SAVAGE.

Well currently there are 5 model 700s in my safe I have never had a bad one now maybe a picky one from time to time but never a bad one if you find a bullet that it likes you are set.

I recently sold a 700 lss in 270 wsm wish I still had it but I wanted something new. From day one cloverleafs with anything I threw down the tube from cheapo blue box federals to winchester supreme

I have a 204 sps sporter weight set in an older bdl stock I bought used that everyone told me wouldnt shoot 45 gr bullets well it likes them better than 40s

My 300 ultra is a plain jane all black sps that I will trick out over time it pretty much shoots moa and I dont have a muzzel break on it I am still playing with it looking for a load

Ansd my newest addition of course it is heavily modified but is deep doen nothing more than a 700 sps is my christensen arms hunter in 257 wby that the first group I shot was a four shot group I could cover with a dime.

Like I have said before get soemthing you like whether its a savage or a winchester or a remington I like to stick with one brand then I know them well. And you never forget where the safety is!

I have on in22-250 with a bull barrel. My dad has a 204 with a regular barrel and the both shoot awesome. My dad also has a Savage predator that shoot really well so no complaints here
