Remington R15 .204

Well, I think I am giving up on Remington. I thought I would give the R15 a try based on Byron's glowing reviews and endorsement. Since I already have two AR's in .223, I wanted to try the .204 since I am fond of the cartridge. I was really excited about this gun.

I have had one on order since April since I work part time at SW and can buy one at an exceptional price on Remington's special purchase program for retail sales people. Problem is, everytime I call Remington to find out when I can expect my gun they always say, "2 or 3 months". Thats all well and good but now they are still saying 2 or 3 months. Its kinda disappointing that Remington published a release of January 08 and now we are looking at September or October with best case scenario. I was hoping for better out of Remington but I am not surprised. They just are not the same company they were a decade ago.

So, now I am looking at getting something else. I checked on Tikka since I read where a PM member found a Tikka Varmint in a .204 Ruger. Last I knew, Beretta has never imported that rifle into the USA. Talked to the Beretta rep yesterday and they still dont and have no plans to in the near future. Not sure what their marketing stratedgy is there since the .204 is an aweful popular varmint cartridge but maybe there is a method to their madness.

My next choice would be the CZ 527 Kevlar in the .204 Ruger. I know that will make IdBob smile. I would probably love the gun and it would probably be a darn sight more accurate that the R15, but, I sure would have liked a .204 in the AR platform. Oh well, I guess Mick Jagger said it best when he said, "You cant always get what you want".

I wonder what the true hold up is? It's not like they designed a whole new gun. Maybe the barrel but not the gun. Could they be having issues with the .204s?? I like my r15 in .223 but it does get pretty dam hot.

I'm saving for a DPMS heavy barrel .204 or Dtech. I like the light weight but it may not be worth it.

have D tech or Dan Carey build you an upper in 204.... or 20 tactical.....

You can be sure that either one would shoot very well....
You would not have any quality issues.... or warranty issues....

but you will have to wait for either one.... I am sure they both have worked lined up for months...... :-(

Richie,
I have a tikka stainless varmiter in 204, and a dpms ar in 204. I bought both of them at Scheel's. The tikka has a great feel, wonderful trigger, and isn't that heavy to carry in the field. I bought mine for 749, but saw they had them discounted a good percentage when I was in there last week. The DPMS 204 is pretty heavy (24 inch fluted barrel) for a calling rifle, but love the 204 semi-auto. I have the jp trigger which is very nice. If I had to do it again, I would buy the tikka and put quality glass on it. Both shoot factory 40 grainers under an inch at 100 yards, closer to 3/4". PM me if you have any other questions.

They are probably having to fill so many stores needs that they HAVE to get them their's first. I'm sure because of the high sales on them for the price they can hardly keep up with production. Just remember with any proform the real customers that pay full price come first and then they will hook you up. Just be patient.

Thats the problem though furblaster. There are no stores getting them either. I have heard rumors that this person saw one here or this person saw one there but have yet to confirm a single sighting. I understand being patient on a proform. I have had to in the past but this is getting ridiculous. According to Remington the .204 R15 is still backordered.

I know Darby. The time is coming. I never thought I would want a Cooper or need a Cooper until I shot yours. Now I got the bug.

I have thought about a D-Tech but the price on this R15, I could not even come close to touching even a D-Tech upper.

I might have to call Scheels GCrock and find out if they have any Tikka's in the .204 Varmint and if so, how they get them. Beretta rep is telling us that they have never, nor do they plan on ever importing the .204. Then I hear from guys like you that you have seen one.

Richie,
I bought my tikka 204 late last fall, and hunted with it this past winter. They have had at least one varmint stainless in stock every time I have been there. With the recent price reduction, I was thinking about buying another for those prairie dog trips, and just because I have access to a rare commodity! I've heard it mentioned that Scheel's is the only place to get the tikka's in 204--I sure haven't seen them anywhere else. If you want me to check on the inventory, and price--let me know. Be happy to do the leg work for you. They really are nice, the first rifle I reach for out of the safe.

Too bad they don't make the Browning micro in .204 A-bolt I have anymore. Its a tack driver!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif According to Browning what I bought was a special run of Shot Show special. They listed them for about a year.Never even been to a shot show. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I also was wanting the Remington 204 but I got sick of waiting for one as well so I ended up buying a 204 upper from dan carey a couple of weeks ago. I should have it any day.

You might want to check with dan and see what he can build a complete gun for.

Scheels is the only place that is importing the Tika 204 I have seen them in the Iowa city store for around $700.

I bought a DPMS 204 this summer and I really like it so far. It is my first AR so I don't have anything to compare to but I am very pleased.

GCrock,
Thanks a bunch for the info. I called Scheels in Lincoln and much to my surprise you were right on the money. Scheels is the only dealer in North America where that gun is imported to on a special deal exclusive to Scheels only. They quoted me a price of $649.00 plus $20.00 shipping.

I just got done faxing them a copy of the FFL and giving them my credit card number. Done deal. Hopefully within a week I will have my new Tikka Varmint in .204 Ruger. I hope its as much a tack driver as my Tikka .300 WSM. I cancelled my R15 order.

Thanks again and Remington can pound sand.

You might want to look at DPMS, I have the .204 AR-15. Only took 4 weeks to get. It will shoot small little holes with the 39g BK. Still working on a load for the V-Max 32g.

I brought this same subject up a couple of weeks ago and this link was put on my thread
http://www.gunsamerica.com/930217804/Gun..._15_Varmint.htm

I to have had a R15 in 204 ordered for several months now and my dealer tells me the same thing when he calls that they just tell him they don't know when they will ship that they are on backorder. I already have two other rifles in 204 or I would probably go ahead and order from Detch or Dan Carey. I also made the mistake of trading a rifle in that has already been sold so I kind of have to wait just hope it gets here before fall so I can get the bugs worked out before bobcat season starts.

The 204 wil get just as hot as the 223. They both burn about the same amount of powder, if anything the 204 burns more.

Congrats on the Tikka, I am sure it will be a shooter. I guess since you passed on the cooper in 204, I will let you shoot mine next time we come up there. She should be here in a couple days. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Claimbuster talked me into the 204 after Alice commondeered Pricilla and told me to shop for a suitable replacement. Whats a guy to do /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Man, I hate when that happens. The little woman steals your gun and tells you to go buy a new one? Now thats my kind of woman. I told you she was a keeper.

I have not given up on the Cooper yet. I will own one in the near future. I was thinking about a .221 Fireball like yours but I still think the .17 Remington would be a fun cartridge. I will have to check and see if Dan chambers the .17 Remington.

For now I think the Tikka will satisfy my .204 yearnings for now. It should shoot tiny little holes especially when I get all my reloading equipment. Good thing I have a second job to pay for all my toys.

Richie,
Glad to hear they had one in stock, and at a good price. Post up some pictures when you get it set up and shooting tiny groups. The varmint models come with the larger clip, think it holds like 6 or 7 rounds. Nice thing when you get into a target rich enviroment. I'm sure you'll enjoy your tikka varmint in 204 as much as I enjoy mine--still one of the best values out there. Good Hunting!
