Remington SPS tactical vs. Remington XCR tactical

Wondering if the XCR tactical is worth the extra money. Same twist rates, XCR 26 inch barrel and SPS tactical is 20 inch barrel. Stock on the SPS tactical is a hogue rubber overmold vs. a stiffer HS stock. For you long range shooters what are your thought about the two. Looking at the .223 caliber. Looking for ranges 300-700 max. bench rest mostly

I have the XCR compact tac. in 223. (20" BBL) The extra coin is for the B&C stock (rather positive its not a HS). Hogue stocks get a lot of flex if you put pressure down on the fore end. Second, you are paying for an all stainless barrel and action that is PVD coated. In all honesty, Remington's PVD coating is awesome. My rifle gets used pretty hard and it has not one scratch on the barreled action where I can see metal thru, its really tough. The SPS is not stainless and has a rougher finish, bead blast/blued? Basically a cheaper version of a parkerized barreled action as found on the 700P. The XCR has the 40X trigger, same as their custom shop rifles have. Its adjustable and breaks like glass. The SPS I believe has the x-mark trigger. Umm, the XCR has the fluting on it if that matters to you. Accuracy wise, with 69gr. FGMM, my XCR will hold under MOA out to 400 yards. Usually at 500 it hovers under/over MOA. I've never shot an SPS, but i know they can be shooters as well. In my opinion, their biggest downfall would be the the stock and trigger, in that order. Those are the differences, you'll have to decide if they are worth the extra $400 or so . Hope this helps.

Oh, missed the last part of your post. If you plan on most always shooting 300-700 yards, I would find an 8 twist rifle. The 69gr. is usually about the heaviest a 9 twist will accurately sling. At 600-700 yards the 75-80gr. pills fly a heck of a lot better than the 69's do. If you get into just a little variable wind at the longer ranges, it will drive you nuts.

I have a friend that has two SPS tacticals, one is a .223, the other is a 308. They both shoot good, and with the 20" barrel are great pickup guns.

Have an SPS Tactical in 223 and I really like it. I cannot comment on the XCR, I have never seen one. Only negative of the SPS is the Hogue stock, replaced mine with H.S. Precision. Shoots better now and way more consistent. Shoots 69gr Sierra's very well, if I do my part it will shoot 1/2 inch at 100 yards regularly.

XCR Compact is HS, XCR Longe Range is B&C. There is a couple on Gunbroker that have XCR fluting with the SPS stock. Its a couple hundred cheaper.

Just buy the SPS, and if it is not to your liking stock wise, buy a new what ever.[ H.S, B&C ]

FWIW, the SPS Tac, shoots lights out and is a fine example of the Remington 700 line up. IMO.

I appreciate all the advice and help. Can I throw in another question... What about the remington 700 VS? I can pickup a XCR had 800 rounds through it for ~ 850 and its the 20" barrel or a new SPS tactical for 600 or 700 VS for 750. All the secrets are out... I want to shoot long range but... its a .223 and just barely getting into longer range shooting. Appreciate all the help in advance

I would go with the sps tac new, the VS will have a slow twist. Shoot the tac as is for awhile and upgrade as funds or urge occurs.

If you really want to shoot longer ranges, skip the .223 idea and pick up yourself a .308 also available in the SPS, XCR, and 700P models, all respectable shooters

Good advice. I had an SPS tactical in 308 and it was a great gun. It was very accurate but I hated the stock and trigger and it did not balance well. Recently I picked up an XCR compact and there is no comparison. The 40x trigger is perfect the fluting helps the gun balance better and the B&C stock is nice. I am much happier with the XCR

I thought I'd go with the .223 only because I'm a poor college student. Cheaper to buy/load ammo for. If I get just the Sps tactical do you think I'm ging to want to upgrade the stock very soon? I ask as it may be better/cheaper to buy it with a hs or b&c stock on it already? How far accurately will the .233 shoot (gun being limiting factor not the shooter).

The Hague stock on the SP's will serve its purpose until you could save enough for a better stock. I'm not a fan of the comb height on the his or b&c stocks. 223 will make it to 1000 with the right load.

Take a look at the Remington VTR. I love mine in .223. I did add a Timney trigger but it shot lights out even before. It will shoot cheap factory ammo into 2" groups, or better, at 200 yards. I really like the barrel being ported on the top.

Stay with the .223. With 68gr Hornady match bullets (BC of 0.350) you can do target shooting to 1,000 and shoot it all day (and see your hits on plates).

A 308 will beat you up after a while.

.

Buy the Sps tactical. If it shoots well and suits your needs so be it. If ya feel like the stock is hindering ya the go ahead and buy a better one. But if it shoots good why change it
