Remington XP-100 owners - your ideal caliber is. . . ?

I've wanted an XP-100 ever since I first saw them in Field & Stream when I was 10.

So fast forward 30 years or so

. . . well the good news is at least now I can afford one. . . I'd use it for predators and variments.

Setting aside cost, availability, and other mundane practical concerns, the question is what caliber?

Option A: Leave it as God and Remington intended: .221 Fireball. Ignore the issues this causes with brass availability, etc, etc, etc.

Option B: Get real and get a .233. Cheap and readily available everything and gives up nothing to the .221 FB.

Option C: .22-250. PITA to find one, but if/when I do, well, p-dogs had best be afraid. Very afraid.

Option D: 7 BR or some other bigger-than-.22 caliber. Why use a hammer when you can use dynamite?

Option E: Some other bizzaire wildcat caliber that just got invented last week. Major gun range street cred can only come via a major pain in the [beeep].

Don't just tell me what you own or would get, tell me WHY.

+1 on the 6mmBR. If you do it and buy a new barrel blank, go with a 1-12. Lapua brass and you will see 10+ reloads per case and crazy accurate.

Although I'm an active shooter and like varmint hunting, I never seem to get around to doing much of it.

Having said that, I always liked the XP-100, I even like its looks although I would guess that some find that strange. A gun way ahead of its time. Don

6 MM BR. Hmmmm. I'm intrigued.

Particularly because I already own a .243, so shared bullets and some overlapping powder selections as well.

I'll have to troll around and look at some prices.

I was off base in my PM to you. On www.saubier.com under "small caliber discussion" on page seven is the picture of Ray's 20 Javelina AI, that I built for him. The title of the thread is "some things that are good to see in a PD town"

Nothing wrong with the 221 fire ball for general varminting.

But if you build custom I would get a 6mmBR.
It's basically a shortened 243. More power than a 223 rem and a better choice for deer.

Muzzle blast from a 15 inch 22-250 would be ear splitting!

Ernie Bishop posted photos of several of his on this thread and they are worth a look very nice custom pistols
I think a 7mm08 would be fairly controlable but he has some in 6.5x284 7mm Dakota 7mm SAUM

UF--he just tied for 1st in the MOA roving field course with that 7 SAUM of his--great cartridge www.moaguns.com, shared 1st with Mark Hamton. I have a bunch of XP's in various cals. but the next one will be a 6.5 SAUM. That's the perfect long-range large-capacity case for the XP...IMO. I have 1 in 6.5 WSM, but it's a bit too big. The best long-range cal. i've used to date was my old 6.5-284 Win. XP.

..it is. Have just that combination in a Savage Striker, but NEVER shoot it (or any other rigs for that matter) without hearing protection. Dang gun actually failed me on the abovementioned field course though.

The load's a 65 JLK Low Drag at 3230, and is very accurate out of it's 15" McGowen barrel.

For PD's though i prefer my 17 FB XP with 25 Horn HP's @ about 3300 out to ~500 yds. on any given day.

Why? I just like the 221FB. It's a classic, and very user friendly.

6BR's a good choice too, but 22BR would be even better.
Why? The BR cartriges are always accurate with great brass available.

FWIW I have a 22BR built on a 700.
Easy to form cases and lighter than 6BR recoilwise (is that a word?) which might be a factor with a handgun.

Here's a pic of the 22-250 Striker that's gonna be my go-to coyote rig this season 65 JLK Low Drag at 3230 mv oughtta' be just the ticket--

Gonna take some more work on the trigger mechanism to get it like i need it to be, but it's giving me ~0.5-0.75 MOA now as is. Some bedding work's needed to.

Here's a buddies factory 22-250 Striker with a terrible trigger that's shooting consistent 0.5 MOA with JLK's 60 Low Drag. Here's a 425-yd. 3 shot group i shot with it the 1st time dead on the nose for trajectory vs. Ball. Plex reticle calcs.--

If you are still interested in buying a xp-100. I have a xp-100r in 22-250 that has been fired, but is in excellent condition. It includes a mounted Burris 3-12x handgun scope, and a bi- pod. If you are interested send me a message. Thanks- Brent

It depends what you want to do with it.

A fast twist 223AI would be cool.

If you want bigger, I'd go 243 Win. Bigger yet, I'd go 260 or 7-08. A Grendel would be cool too......
