Retired

I'm pulling the plug June 15th 2027... so I'm officially UNDER the 1 year mark. I turn 65 this December and will be 65.5 when I finish and start drawing SS benefits. I'll have 23 years and 10 months in with the Florida Retirement System, I wanted to do an even 25 years but I am simply miserable at work now days. It's not worth the extra 3% to stay another year.

I should be financially fine drawing my Army Retirement, my Florida High Risk Retirement, and Social Security... all in all I should make about the same annually that I'm making now.

I do plan on getting a part time job as a Range Safety Officer at a local indoor range and gun shop. They are always hiring and it will give me pocket change and a way to continue to shoot and network with others.

Bowhntr6pt, enjoy the upcoming retirement. Getting to "under the year" mark was one I remembered well!

I retired a couple of months ago....Medicare and Social Security will kick in this October. I'll still teach occasionally, but overall have an adequate retirement in place. As anticipated, I am keeping busy!

I started medicare this month

One good thing about my TriCare Military coverage, which has been free since I retired, it will automatically convert to TriCare for Life when I start Medicare, which pays what Medicare doesn't.

I've received a lot of great feedback from other military retired folks who say they are paying ZERO out of pocket since their TriCare converted and they went on Medicare. Downside is you must have Medicare and that you have to pay for... a catch 22 if you will.

I have to have Medicare in order for my Tricare to convert, that means I'll pay out of pocket for coverage (Medicare) since retiring from the military. That wasn't the deal I made with Uncle Sam over forty-five years ago... my medical was supposed to be part of my retirement benefits, but with the way it is now, I'll be coming out of pocket for the first time since 2001. Sucks but that's life and at least I have about the best coverage one could ask for.
