Rookie Questions - Please give advice!

Last year I got all excited to get into "calling"...then I got busy and only made it out once!

I bought a JS convert a caller and plugged in an MP3 player with a bunch of digital JS distress sounds and the azden remote setup, etc. The one time I went out it just seemed like more trouble than it's worth with the remote, 3 power switches, 4 different batteries, etc.

Question is, does it really make a difference to have the "remote" with the call a good distance from you? Or could a guy get by with just running the speaker out away from the hide 20 yard or so?

It seems much easier to bag the azden remote/MP3 player idea and just throw in a cassette and let it play? (mostly because I'll only go out and call a few times a year)

If I do go this route and I only call a few times a year, what tape would you guys recommend playing?

I’m not an electronic call user so take this for what it is worth. I use hand calls so the coyote’s attention is focused on me. The key is when the sound is coming from close to you, holding still is a must. The advantage of having the sound coming from 20-50 yards up wind is that it has the animal’s attention is away from your location. This allows you to get away with a little more movement. I don’t know how much more. If it were me I would still make slow and deliberate movements regardless how far away the sound is. I know what you are proposing will work IF you do everything else right.

As far as what tape to use I have no clue what is even available. I would try something different. Most everyone uses rabbit distress at some point.

Good Luck!

Dump all of it on some other rookie and get some hand calls. Your wife will love the dieing rabbit sounds and the howles in the house, especialy at the supper table  .

Utah,
A lot of calling coyotes depends on what the coyotes are dining on. I have never been out to Utah so I really dont have any advice for you in that regard, but here we also have a high fox population and I have had more than reasonable success with fox pup distress tapes. We dont have a high concentration of rabbits, but I have called a few in that way. One of my all-time favorites though is using a turkey call. I have had some of the best hunts for yotes just sitting on the edge of a field with a turkey mouth call. Also invest in a mouth call that imitates rodent distress. I have noted a few times that the tapes were too loud when the yotes sneak in from a close distance.

Utah223, I think you're on the right track by visiting the forums and investigating the possibilities. Everyone here has some experience and several of these fellers are down right proficient (I'm not one of them). That being said, I think the use of a remote control E-caller give you huge advantages. Of course, there's the motion aspect, but the wind is of major importance. Get yourself down wind of the call and I think you've got it made. Regarding sounds . . . a hungry, un-educated coyote is going to come to almost any distress sound. From rodent squeaks to jack rabbit screams, you should be able to call them in. Here is a link to a rather informative website. It is time well spent just reading it from top to bottom. Just my $.02.
Good luck and God bless,
~Scott

Thanks guys for all the help.

Basically I just need to get out and try it...

Just wondering if I should spend the extra time messing around with this remote control setup, or bag it and just run the speaker out 30ft.

if you have to use the e-call use the remote you will find it to much trouble to run a wire all the time.hand calls really work great and it is a good way to start. i grew up in no. ogden and my mom still lives there if you need some help let me know i have been doing it since 1964 and it is still fun

Utahdogger, do you take on "trainees"? I've been calling twice with experienced callers but when I call myself I see nothing. I'm afraid I'm one of the idiots out there educating the coyote world. Any chance of hooking up sometime right after Christmas? I teach at SUU (Cedar City) so I've got time around then.

LOL, I've been calling for about 15 years or so, and I'm still learning Pard, if you were closer I would say sure, not sure how we would hook up to go ! E-Mail me and let's chat.
