Steve, It's amazing how much 'rainbow' is in the .22 @ 100yds...

I also did the 10/17M2 conversion, let me save you some time.

No, you cant like its been said just throw on a barrel, the pressures the M2 run at are higher than a 22LR, your going to get cases ejecting before you want them to. I splattered my face with powder to find this out. Thats after the heavy bolt. Dont buy the Clark heavy bolt, its too heavy, I had a few problems with it, the timing was off, causing bulged case heads, earley ejections, double feeds, fail to eject, etc. Replaced it with the Skeeter bolt and spring from here, along with their bore treatment....problem solved. I would call them and place your order so you get what you need. Johnathon is a great guy and will talk your ear off, just so you know. They use a mid weight bolt and a progressive spring, whatever it works.

Ohh yea, I love the little M2. I have owned this 10/22 for better than 15 years, I have shot it more in the last 3 to 4 months since the conversion than the last 10 years. Its my new camp rifle.

Wow!
Thanks for all the info and the pics too! since I work with composties in the aircraft industry,I'm kind of fond of carbon fiber. I will probably go with the carbon fiber barrel.

I converted my 10/22 over to the 17M2 as well. It is a bunch of fun now. I am going to take it this spring down to Redfrog's house and shoot some of our prairie rats with it.

I would like to convert the Ruger 10/22 magnum over to the HMR but I don't think Ruger makes that gun anymore?

I read talk over on the rimfire site about the manufacturers possibly discontinuing production on the 17mach round? Anyone have any more details? I'd hate to start my project then it be a pain to find ammo?

The Mach2 was never the big hit the HMR was, I think thats why there have been a few models discontinued from different manufactures. I think the ammo will be around for a while though. Nows the time to buy ammo anyways, just stock up while the gettin is cheap.

how much cash are we looking at here, buying a new .17 barrel and having a gunsmith install it?

Price the barrels on midway, and if you can turn an allen wrench...you can do it yourself..its 2 screws after you remove the stock.

Midway has the Eley stuff for under 5 a box yet, if you look around you can still get it at a decent price. Everytime I order something from midway I buy 5 to 10 boxes of it.

I have a problem I have a 10/22 stock has the same barrel and all with a 3-9x40 scope set at hundreds yards. I can not hit [beeep] with this thing. I am wanting a 17 is it better to go buy a savage 17. or convert the 10/22. What about the accury and things?

Thats a real good plan, I just ordered 25 boxes of ELEY from Midway the other day.

How does the ELEY shoot out of your rifle FUR-Hunter??? I have only shot the Hornady stuff, and its pretty impressive.

If your happy with a 22LR I would probably try to accurize your 10/22, put a aftermarket barrel on it, lighten up the trigger. If your using it for squirrels or rabbits to 100 yards, I would personally make it a 17Mach2.

I don't know what some of the kits cost now, You can check out Volquartsen or some of the other kits mentioned here. Then compare it to the cost of a Savage Mach2.

The Mach2 is very accurate at 100 yards, its easy to shoot groups under 1" when the wind is co-operative.

Just to throw my .02 in. I have an M2 bolt gun and it shoots all the brands I throw in it pretty good. But, it likes the Eley the best, go figure.

I had a chance to sit down and talk to one of the Eley reps last year when we hosted the USA World Cup down here. According to him, production of the M2 round will not stop anytime soon.

why the mach 2 yea i want to sit a scope things squirrels or rabbits but i want to make close shots to. my buddy has a savge 17. bull barrel bolt action and he can hit any thing clos or not

Your going to like it. The Eley shoots as good if not better than the Hornady stuff out of mine. I will never buy the CCI again though.
