Ruger 10/22 Conversion to .17

You guys shooting the 17Mach2 conversions, have you found a boreguide that allows you to put a rod through the muzzle end safely????????

I have been using a stupid fishing string and patch to clean my bore, what a pain. BTW Volquartsen dosn't recommend you even put a rod down the bore, they recommend the fishing string, but that is tiresome.

Drill a hole in the back of the receiver and you can clean it from the rear. Remove the bolt and the hole acts as a bore guide. It beats sticking a rod in the muzzle big time.

Jack

Otis makes a small cleaning kit for the .17. I picked up one at the NRA annual meeting and it fits in a small nylon zippered case I had in a drawer.

I also drilled the rear of the receiver for a rod to fit through, but when I'm not in the position to totally tear down the receiver and remove the bolt, the Otis kit comes in really handy..

They also make a Bore Snake for the .17s...

Dont ever use a bore snake on your 17 rimfire, I have heard of too many guys breaking the pull string off and leaving the rest in the barrel, and having a hard time getting them out. I just bought a rod for mine. They also make this little gaget, called a patch worm. The nylon will be harder to break than the small shoe string on the Boresnake, plus it just pulls a patch, not alot of resistance like the snakes.

I use a bore snake for my 10/17 no worries so far. Last time I bought ammo, Natchez had Rem for $3.59 if you bought 10 or more. Pretty cool how pimped out you can make a 10/22.

Seems like I have seen that Otis kit at the Warehouse, its a plastic coated cable.

I have toyed with the idea of drilling the back out, but even taking the bolt out and all that would still be easier than the fishing line.

I notice that if I don't clean this barrel about every box, the accuracy drops off noticably. I should find a good powder solvent, I have been using Butch's Bore Shine.

I tried out some Eley 17Mach2 ammo today, so far so good. Here are two groups shot out of my 10/22 conversion to 17Mach2.

The first group is 10 shots with Eley, you will notice its 3/4" higher than the Hornady group shot with the same zero and distance, due to the increased velocity of the Eley ammo.

These groups were shot off a bi-pod, in some wind, as you can tell from the .5"-1.00" of wind drift.

I'm another happy Eley customer! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know this is totally off topic but where did you get the orange sticky Bullseye's at?

If you have a Bi-mart department store in your town, I bought them in the sporting goods section. Cheney Washington just opened up a Bi-mart in Washington State, too.

They are made by Birchwood Casey.

OK, thanks. No Bi-Marts around here but will check out Birchwood Casey.

haven't yet. Gotta make a decision on bolt handle and v-block. waiting to here something back from the shooter solution floks. I ended up going with a Green Mt barrel, hope it will be ok. Wanted the composite but it was out of my budget for now. might do that on my next build.
