Ruger 77/44 question

Sure - the Ruger 44's do not have a reputation for fine accuracy but should knock the lights out of a coyote or cat while punching a large hole in the fur.

If you want them to go down and stay down it will sure do the job.

First deer rifle was a Ruger 44 Deaefield. I hated having to sight that thing in each year. My 308 is easer on the shoulder than that thing was. But boy did it make a nice hole.

I have one of the new 77/44 "All Weather" rifles and like it just fine. I've killed two coyote's with it so far, but this was done while deer hunting. I would not consider it a primary coyote/bobcat rifle, but that's simply my opinion. They can be very finicky until a load is found it likes, but certainly capable of the job if you don't mind hide damage.

I lapped the rings on mine, as well as performed a trigger job and shimmed the two piece bolt. Also made a round bedding washer from a bicycle inner tube. Mine wears a Leupold matte 4X as well. The rotary magazine can be problematic if you're wanting to use certain bullets, but for the most part that can be worked around also. I've done a good bit of testing with mine with various jacketed and cast bullets and have found several that will shoot very well.

Good luck to ya'

I know the 44 Mag from a rifle will work for coyotes. I hope the 77/44 does as good for you as my 788 does for me.

The hornady 225 FTX shot well in mine as does their 300 XTP load.

Nice to find someone else with the 788 in the 44. I love mine. Shoots better than people would expect.

You aways need the odd ball, like the 44 mag in a rifle, in the safe that makes people wonder what you were thinking.

The 44 mag will kill a coyote without any problem as long as you do your part. I shot a coyote while deer hunting last year with my Winchester 94 trapper 44 mag at 110 yards and it dropped where it was standing didn't even do a death roll just died on impact. Bullet was 240 gr sjhp with 24 gr H110.

I have a 77/44mag with a 4x Leupold, use it for deer. I shoot the 240gr jhp. Works great. I use the same loads in my Blackhawk. It shoots reasonably well, about 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds. Plenty good enough at that range. I use it in the thicker cover so never shoot farther than that. Have yet to kill an elk with it. Maybe some day.
