Ruger Mini 14

Picked up a used Mini, shooting well for my use (around 2-3" at 100 yds, probably the farthest shot I would take at a fox or coyote here in brushy ol' SC). In the future, I may want to improve on that, so would anyone on here know a reputable gunsmith that wouldn't charge an arm and a leg to heavy barrel and "accurize" this rifle? I was inspired by an article in an old issue of Varmint Hunter to see if this service was still being widely offered. Thanks in advance! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

There lots of things that can be done. Take a look at this site.

Then check in at this one. Lots of info here.

The mini as you know is not known for its tack driving ability. It can be made to shoot very well.

I have a Mini 14 and I have an AR15. Right from the first shot the AR shot under an inch. My Mini is usually around 2 inches, sometimes when I make all the right mistakes it shoots under an inch. The Mini is fun (just throws the brass way to far, 30 feet)

I had a few mini's and now I got the new target model. On a standard ranch model, I added a flash suppressor. I believe it acted like a harmonic balancer. Believe it or not, it did decrease the groups by 50%. I would get about 1 1/4 inch groups, About 2 to 2 1/2 groups before. Used 60 gr v-maxes.

The target model shoots under 1 in. Still working loads for it. The triggers are the worst part. If you are working from a budget, I would do trigger work first.

Good Luck

You should sell it and buy an AR. They are not that expensive. I have less then $575 in my kit if you don't include the scope. Even my kit from model 1 sales with an ER Shaw barrel shoots .5" groups @ 100 yards not really even trying to be accurate. I can peel out 10 round in like 30 sec and still be under MOA!! I lucked out with mine cause I have some groups that were shot at 300 yards and still were inside an inch!

Maybe he doesn't want an AR.

It always comes to that.
Mini's deffinatly have their place.
Minis are fun to shoot Minis don't look like EBR, Minis can be made to shoot very well. I think that was what he wanted to talk about.

That is just about true but you will have more money into it by then than if you just bought the AR. Seen it time and time again but what is a learning curve for?

I don't care for an AR. I don't like the looks of them. I have shot some and don't care much for them. They might shoot better out of the box, but I like rugers better. If I can shooter under 1 inch groups @ 100(which I can with all of my rugers) I am happy. I have a Mini 14 target, M77V in .220 swift and a .300 win mag.

That is just my opinion. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Here we are again. He did not ask if he could get a cheap AR to shoot well. He asked about having a Mini accurized. I have both. I like both. There are reasons for both. This is not what is better in our opinions.

Why is that so tough to respond to? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Shilen Barrels a few years back used to offer a drop in barrel for the Mini 14, if I remember right. I do not see it offered at this time. I went to their shop and Gary said that a shooter had obtained 1/4" groups with one. Granted this guy was top shooter to start with, but it could be done. The price seemed reasonable, but I had just sold mine for accuracy reasons. You might give them a call

you should buy an RPG with a laser guided scope and paint on it "Mini AR" who cares about moa you will blow the yote off the field /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Ive talked to Gundoc on the phone, he is very well liked at PerfectUnion too, If you go PerfectUnion'd website there are alot of home made fixes for getting more accuracy from the Mini. It will keep you pretty busy reading all the info there. Look under "Accurizing the Mini " Good Luck ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Didn't mean to start a small fire, but evidently I touched a nerve with that question. I share the same opinion as Rugershooter, mostly because if I want to find hunting land here among the old time farmers, most of them frown upon the "Black Rifle" and younger man combination. Off the bat, first impression, without getting to know you better, they see you as potentially irresponsible, and tend not to invite you back. That's not an assumption: I've heard it from more than one landowner. Even though they are both semi-auto, the wood-stocked appearance is always accepted much better over the tactical look here. I don't have anything against AR's at all, they just tend to work against me in this area of SC. If I can get the Mini to perform decently at 100yds I will be happy, since that is all I will need it to do. As usual, thanks for all of the help guys!

well I had ARS do a couple mini's, he could make them shoot, but he died suddenly a few years ago. you may look into accuracy systems incorporated they are a popular sight for mini accurising.
my minis will shoot with my AR's, the main difference is lack of good triggers for a mini.

You'll get it to shoot fine for you but there really is no need to have to explain yourself to the "buy what I bought, its the best" crowd. You know what you want and need. You can have either, both, or neither and its all good. Good luck with it and good hunting.

Along these same lines, has anyone ever had a mini out of the box that was reasonably accurate. I am just about to get one but am scared I don't even have the chance of getting a good one.

I've never seen one group really well out of the box, however having said that the one I had clear back when they first came out would usually put the first round where I wanted it, it just wouldn't shoot the third, four and fifth rounds into a tight little group. I actually liked the way the rifle handled.
