I'm a big 629 fan, as well as a big Ruger revolver fan. While I favor the Redhawk second to least in the Ruger line (I have absolutely NO use for a GP100), I can't say that I really think new production 629's are any better than the Redhawks after a spring replacement - which is still cheaper than the 629's purchase price. My older smith's, 20yrs vintage and older, had better triggers out of the box than the Redhawks, but they also had better triggers than current Smiths too.
Despite letting my FFL expire, I still do a lot of work on revolvers. There are a lot of reasons you don't see repair work on a $300 Charter or Rossi, and why you'd see more repair work on higher price S&W models... BUT... I do see more internal refitting work for Smith's than I do for Rugers. If a Ruger leaves the factory in proper function, it generally stays that way. The hand is considerably narrower in Smith's, and seems to take wear a lot faster - that's why they get the reputation of shooting loose faster than Rugers, not necessarily because they're weaker, but because they DO GO OUT OF TIME FROM NORMAL USE FASTER, even with light loads.
Tuning is kinda a toss up. Not many non-smiths are good at tuning leaf spring actions, but most guys leave that alone and just work the trigger spring, which is easy. The single spring Redhawk takes a little more understanding to reduce the SA trigger pull without developing light strikes. Done right, however, you can tune a single spring Redhawk action to have no more stacking than the Smith action.
If I'm racing, I want a lighter and smaller 629, but I also recognize that I'll wear out most of the internal parts after a season or two, which doesn't happen to a Redhawk, but the weight loss and faster handling is nice. For hunting, Ruger 100%. For a belt gun, either works - the Smith will be lighter, but the Ruger less expensive to get into.
Personally, after owning, shooting, hunting, rebuilding, and smithing all kinds of revolvers, I like Rugers.
I currently have 3 629's and 5 Redhawks. I favor the Super Redhawks to both - which my wife and I have over a dozen Super Red's.
