Ruger SFAR in 308W

Are any of you shooting one of these? I ordered one for Lion hunting. I am exited to tinker with it, and get it tuned.

I am not too worried about some of the reliability issues some have had. Seems the problems for the most part have been sorted out by now.

I’ve been looking in to getting an AR platform 308 and this is on the list…most of the problems I’ve read about were gas system related. An adjustable block and/or opening up the port seem the best the remedy. I do think those issues have been addressed, so should be good to go.
I’m trying to decide if I want more of a battle rifle like the PTR 91, DS Arms SA 58, or an AR 10. The FN FAL type wins in a lot of categories..prob not the best choice for hunting 4 legged creatures though.

I already have a couple AR10's and don't really like them too much. They are just too heavy to pack around hunting. Especially with the some what, heavy suppressor I have. It turns it into a portable tank really..

1st thing I will do is take the muzzle brake off, and put a Surfire flash hider/adapter on.

I have noticed over the years that muzzle brakes are detrimental to accuracy.

I am looking forward to testing out Sierra's 150gr Varminter #2136 with H4895

Yes, I have the 16” SFAR and love it. As light or lighter than an AR15. I have an AGM Rattler on top and a Banish 30 on the end. Still coming in under 10lbs I believe.
I had ZERO issues with mine. I shot a box or two of some 150gr bullets I had on setting 3. Cleaned the barrel and put the AGM on top and added the suppressor and sighted it in using 165gr CoreLokts on setting 1 of the gas block.
Since that time I’ve dropped to 110gr Varmageddons and adjusted the scope. Great round for hogs and coyotes.
I don’t even keep any of my other AR’s at the front of the safe anymore, lol. They are seriously heavy compared to the SFAR.
I’ve posted this before, but here it is in action…

If I didn't already have 3 of the mid-size G2's in 243, an SFAR would be on my very short list. Probably a cm though. I've never seen a really comprehensive accuracy test though.

With the SFAR is it possible to swap out uppers to different calibers? If not what would be a good choice to do so? Stag Arms looks like it has a DPMS type lower.
I’d like to get a factory rifle in 308/7.62 for starters and be able to then switch to .22-250, .243, 6.5 Creedmoor etc.

They make a 6.5 Creedmore version in 20"

I think all large caliber gas guns are ok if you have a specific intended use for it. If not, they are useless wastes of money.

For me, I have had good success with smaller Lions, with an AR15. I am preparing to meet a 200 lb Tom though. And I want something light weight, pack-able for miles and miles in the mountains, that punches harder than an AR15. If it was not for this special intended use, I would spend the money and time on about anything else.

Your idea of a battle rifle seems romantic until you actually try to shoot one fast at the range. Then it seems better as a coffee table relic or conversation piece.

But we all waste money on things. Boats, Dirt Bike Graphic kits and on and on.

I never imagined myself owning a Ruger product. I also, after reluctantly buying this rifle based on some very admirable features, did not think I was going to love the thing as much as I do.

As mentioned somewhere, It shoulders just like an AR15 does, it is pleasantly light, and shoots Sierra's #2136 very, very well so far. I have not adjusted the gas block yet, and have yet to attach my suppressor.

So far I loaded up 10 shots of N140, N135 and H4895. All shot well, but H4895 won the shoot out because of a bit better velocity. I have a lot of experience loading 308 with 16" barrels so I knew the proper charge weights to use, and velocity/pressure targets to aim for.

I am done! I just loaded up the rest of the box with H4895 and the rifle is almost ready to hunt. I just need to go back and fine tune the zero with the suppressor, and tinker with the gas setting.

My guess is the Sierra 150gr HPV would should good out of any barrel, with any reasonable powder.

It flat out shoots great with the 3 powders I tried. This rifle is hard on brass. Its OK.. I have lots of 2X or 3X fired brass in bins to use up, and toss out.
