ruger super redhawk in 7.5" or 9.5"??? does the extra 2 inches add anything to it? or is it just added weight?

just wondering what you guys think!

I think the 7.5 looks better but, need to know if there is any advantages. Thanks for your help.
 
I have a 7.5, I thought that the 9.5 was just too heavy. Depending on your use Ruger also makes a Redhawk(no super), it is quite a bit lighter and strong enough to handle heavy loads. It's a little cheaper also. The added weight of the Super combined with the extra 2" of barrel would dampen recoil a bit though.
 
got a super w/ 7.5" in 44mag, 58 0z. empty, add 6 rounds and optics try to carry all day w/ a bandolero style holster your sholder will kill you the next day. I love the gun but wished i'd bought smith 629
 
I have a 7.5" SRH in 44 mag. It's a good amount of gun at 7.5" & for portability & all I wouldn't want any more barrel.
 
I have the super blackhawk hunter with 7.5" barrel. To me the 7.5" balances much better than the 9.5", and it is less awkward to carry and holster.
 
The 9.5 will be left at home after you carry it a few times. Just too much weight, cumbersome and adds nothing to the way it shoots.
 
I have a 480 SRH with 9.5" barrel. Traded a T/C Contender for it. About the only advantage the longer tube gives you is a better sight radius when shooting open sights. I'd probably rather a 7.5" tube on it, same as my Bisley Blackhawk........

When scoped, I had to install after market grips to gain enough traction.

Without a scope, I use the factory grips ....... they are very good.

I prefer without a scope due to weight and balance issues and unscoped I use the "One Ragged Hole" rear and the Ruger front gold bead painted black. Lots of sight radius with a 9.5"

I also own a 7.5 RH and I have fired an identical load through it and my 9.5" SRH and chronoed it. My SRH gained only 15 fps over the shorter RH.

I have not tested other loads ....... that one was a full house heavy cast being pushed with H110 ....... so no slouch. And I am sure that a different pair of barrels would perform differently but that's how mine stacked up with those particular circumstances.

Heck I have shot more deer wit my 4inch 629, and my 4 5/8 inch Superblakhawk than I have my SRH. Shorter barrels are just easier to carry, so they get carried more and end up taking more game.
 
I have both. I use 300gr. GC bullets. I've taken deer, antelope and caribou with both of them. I shoot at 10" steel gongs to get ready for the hunt and fun. I've shot a lot with both handguns. I have a barrel band installed for a sling and hogue grips tapped for a sling stud there. The 9 1/2" seems to recoil less. They are not magnaported. Maybe the 2" extra helps there. My 2 cents.

I tried both and prefer the way the 7.5" balances vs. the 9.5". I ended up with a SBH Hunter. Lots of fun and very effective on hogs and whitetails.
 
I have a scoped 9 1/2. It holds under 3 moa handheld off the bench and
has shot 2 inch groups with lighter lead loads. It's handy to road hunt with
but too big to carry. I had a redhawk that was as accurate but of coarse
would not handle the wild loads I put in the super. If I have it cut I will go to
5 1/2 inches, I don't think 7 1/2 is a short enough gun to carry either. Easy
gun to do a trigger job on, springs available through brownells. I shimmed
the hammer to tighten it but Ideally a bushed hole and pin would be the
way to go. The shims could conceivably get dirt in them and retard the hammer drop. Great 44 for recoil addicts without jumping up to the 454 or
460.
 
The blackhawk hunter is definitely the way to go. There is just something awesome about a big ol' single action revolver. You will not regret it.
 
Traded a 1960 Willy's jeep for a 7.5 ruger blackhawk. Good gun but had been shot a ton. I know the previous guy, he handloaded but loaded near max and shot the [beeep] out of it.
Was shooting with my dad who was the best natural pistol shot I ever knew and he said the gun was shooting blowbuy. Barrel cylinder gap.
The gun was great, even with the gap, it would shoot.
Got older, could not see anymore and decided to have it scoped. Tried a few different scopes but would never hold center. It was the mounts. Sent it to SSK Industries and they installed their TSOB mount. Never had a problem since. Still shoots great.
As far as the blowbuy. Ruger tightened the gap at no charge. Good gun good company. And if you need a mount that will hold, contact SSK.
This is a Ruger 7.5, I have shot whitetail and black bear with it and 2" on the barrel will not make it perform any better.
 
The Redhawk and SRH are stouter guns than the SBH.

And they have longer cylinders which accomodate loads that the Singe action can't.

There is some more theorectical strength in the SRH than the RH ...... but you'd have carpul tunnel and a super case of arthritis WAY before you could prove it.

I hear the posts about the shorter guns. More often than not ..... it's my 4" Smith Mountain Gun that gets the nod. Finnished a wounded escaping elk for a friend with it once ...... four inches of .44 worked too.

Want one like these? I scoped my 9 1/2, but put the fiber optic sights on the 7 1/2.

I like them both, but use the 7 1/2 more because it is handier as I use it in a tree stand for deer inside 50 yards. The 9 1/2 balances better with a scope than the 7 1/2 because the 7 1/2 has it too far out front on the barrel.

How do you like the fiber optic sights? How easy were they to mount? What brand?

I really dislike the stock sights on my Super Blackhawk, but havent done anything about it!
