Savage Striker rebarrel?

I have a Savage Striker, in 308 Win, that I am considering a change for. For those not familiar with Strikers, upper right in the picture:

So this pistol is sub-MOA accurate with the W-748/130 gr TTSX load I developed for it. The issue is at 2800 fps MV, out of the 15" barrel, the recoil is violent. So violent, that the three Warne rings you see on it, can't hold the Burris 2-7x scope tight. After a dozen or so rounds, the scope cant is noticeable, and scope has to be reset. I have tried just about every scope ring known to man, and nothing keeps the scope from canting under recoil. Soooo, given I am getting older, not wiser, I have been considering re-barreling the Striker with something a bit more friendly recoil wise.

My intended purpose is deer hunting, and predator hunting where I pack a shotgun, and a centerfire, for various situations. I was thinking 6mm something, but I am going through a love affair with my 260 Rem. at the moment, so I am thinking 6.5mm something. I was thinking 6mm Dasher, with the 6mm idea, but now with the 6.5 thoughts, I am not sure the which cartridge would be the better choice. A 260 Rem. would be OK, but it seems like recoil would still be an issue. So I am thinking maybe a 6.5x47 Lapua, or something along those lines. The 6.5 LBC/Grendel might be a bit too much of a step down, although the recoil impulse would be nicer. Anyone want to share their thoughts on the possibilities?

What ever choice I go with I will probably go with a heavier barrel profile, and thread it for a suppressor, for deer hunting out of box blinds...This thing is brutal shooting out of a small window, for both recoil and noise level!

I had a Striker in 308 and they do punish you. You could always add a break. That will tame it down. Going 6mm, "I" would probably go 243 or 243AI. Still will probably be stout in a hand gun. JMO

2nd thoughts, 6x250 would be cool too!

Whitetails in WI, we have one field that has a 350 yard field of fire. If it goes to WY, for speed goats, I could see stretching it to 400 yards. I have one whitetail with it, in 308 Win, at 220 yards, and it wasn't near the max. range I feel comfortable with.

As a side note, I was just on the range, checking zero on some deer rifles, for next weekend's opener, and it dawned on me...What about a 6.8 SPC, or if I wanted to go wildcat, 6.5x6.8. Hold over would be getting pretty steep for a 6.5x6.8 versus the 6.5x47, but it would be more recoil friendly.

Not sure it matters, for this discussion, but in my 6.5mm love affair, the 100 gr. Barnes TTSX is shooting some amazing groups, so I would probably stick with that bullet. I use the 80 gr. TTSX in my 6mms, so that would be the choice, if I went that way. They perform well enough in the wind, and the on critter performance has been impressive.

Hey Ray! Yes, I thought about selling it, but I really like it. It just needs to get less violent. A re-barrel is in it's future, but I just can't decide what. I may have to be a bit more realistic about my expectations. The 6.5x47 Lapua is the front runner at the moment. Good bullets to load, same bolt head as the .308 Win, and less recoil, should get me back to shooting it more.

I probably need to get a decision done, and get this thing on order, if I want it under the Christmas tree.

So any thoughts on the 6.5x47 Lapua versus the 6.5 Creedmor?

I started looking for 6.5x47 brass...

That stuff looks pretty scarce! That and the Creedmor would give me a bit more powder capacity, if I did want to push a bullet faster, and deal with the recoil increase. I am guessing brass quality is an advantage for the 6.5x47, if one can find it!

How about a 6x47 Lapua or 6 Creedmoor. I have a 6x47L recoil is very tame with 88gr pills, however it is out of a rifle.

If common sense drove most of what we do, we would all be shooting 1903 Springfields, debating if 165 gr. bullets were enough for coyotes. Or heaven forbid, listen to our wives or friends tell us we have enough firearms!

Seriously, yes I have managed recoil loads, for my grandson's 308 Win, that I could use. The recoil is friendlier, but the light .30 cal bullets don't fare well down range, in the wind.
And I would like to get to flatter trajectories.

And to be honest, this project is more about an anxiety attack, when I had thoughts about selling said Striker, than about the practicality of the firearm.

6mm or 7mmBR may get you there with very little recoil. A 16 inch heavy profile barrel and a rear grip may tame some of the whip. Should recoil more in a straight line.
