Relieving the forend pressure on a 700, if necessary, certainly does not require a gunsmith.
I cannot understand for the life of me why Savage does not bead blast their SS barreled actions. It costs next to nothing to do, and the rifle doesn't look like a frickin' light saber on sunny days...........
The versatility of the savage is huge. You would pretty much with a barrel swap and maybe a bolt change get into anything that a short action could do. The remington is great as well. I dont have experience with the remingtons, but its in my plans. You cant go wrong either way.
Go to a store that has both rifles so you can feel them first hand. If it were up to me, I'd take the Savage anyday over a Remington in today's market. Rems havent't made the huge strides forward in the past 30 years as Savage has. In the 70's and 80's, I'd take the Remington for sure. That is no longer the case. Good luck whichever way you go.

Savage, well they went bankrupt and have since bounced back.
So yea, I guess you can give Savage the "most improved" award
Actually, Savage is to be commended, and they have done a really nice job in recent years.........
Numbers alone do not necessarily make something the best though. That can be seen with the sheer numbers of CVA and Traditions muzzleloaders being sold.
Man, 2much, after reading your first post on this thread I was beginning to think you were going soft on yer Remington stance, glad to see you bounce back a bit on the second page. Was wondering if you were a little under the weather or something.
