Huh, those savages are both cutom jobs if I'm not mistaken. I dont get what your telling me.

As old as this is getting, sure, I will chime in...I have had both, Chevy and Fords and they both ran well. I prefer Chevy but would buy another Ford if I liked what I saw in it........

Dude, I am with you 100 percent.

Well since its savage vs. remington, ill take the remington since its got home field advantage, LOL.

In all seriousness, I am a Rem 700 guy. Have been since I acquired my first 700 which I still have, an old ADL in a .222 rem. It'll shoot 1/4" groups at 100 yards off a bench more times then not. Since then, I've had about 10 different 700s and all of them have shot to my expectations of MOA or under at 100 yards with nothing more then a trigger job to around 2# and my reloads with ease.

On the other side of things, I've bought and played with I think 3 savages now and everyone turned out to be the biggest turd I think anyone could get. 1 of them was not even out of the box "shootable", the other 1 wouldn't shoot a 1.5" group or better at 100 yards with close to $200 spent on bullets/powders/primers/OAL combos, and the other would shoot 1/2" some days, then other days I'd shoot a 5 shot group at 100 yards and have 2 of the 5 not even hit the 8x11" piece of paper. On top of all that, they just feel like a childrens rifle to me, like a big plastic toy really. Shake the gun and you hear things rattle, I just cant get to excited about Savages anymore.

So I've bought and played with 3 savages and none were even close to my standards of how a rifle should shoot. I know there ugly and cheap, but if they shoot I wouldn't really care, however when there ugly, cheap, and dont shoot, I have absolutely no place for a rifle like that in my house.

Only Rems and Wins for me anymore...Looking at 3 rem 700s and 1 win 70 right now. Good looking, good feeling, well put together rifles that shoot even better then they look.

Sorry Tim I had too.

He guys while we are at it!

Is a 17HMR good enough for coyotes?
Which is better .223 or a 22-250?
How about 22-250 or a .243 which is better?
Which Foxpro should I buy?
What is the best caliber?

Points to consider:

The original question is two part to some extent. The title says Rem. vs. Sav and stipulates 300 wsm cal. If the cal. is non debatable as the post title implies, the switch barrel concept is not really relevant. The question then becomes Rem. Vs. Sav.

Remington 700's are the undisputed "small Block Chevrolet" of the bolt action rifle. (the standard by which all others are compared) You don't get that reputation "over time" if it's not earned or without merit. Does this mean that Rem. never made a "lemon 700" or a "run of lemon 700's" NO...What it does mean is the 700 is more familiar to more people and therefore retains it's value to the masses.

Therefore, A Savage is not a Remington. Savages are not the "Gold Standard". That doesn't make them inferior, it just makes them different.

I would say that Rem. & Sav. production Rifles are very close in terms of "out of the box accuracy". Rem. will probably hold its resale value better while Sav. may have slightly better barrel quality at the current time.

When it comes down to it the decision is more psychological than anything else. I worked as a gunsmith for awhile and many BENCHREST customers would have things done to their rifles such as "lap the lugs","true the bolt", "square the action", "lap the rings", "change the crown angle". When asked if these mods increased accuracy most would reply that it improved their confidence. Many Golf coaches tell students that if they do not like the looks of a Golf club "don't use it" explaining that if they don't like the looks of they'll never hit good with it. This same cocept holds true whith rifles. If you really like a Sav. don't buy a Rem. and vise versa. Just be as aware and educated as possible on what you do buy so you'll be more confident and happy with it. As with most things Happiness is very important. For example I like "old" dodge 4x4s. I know there a dodge and UGGGLLLYY but thats what I like therefore I'm happy.

Back to rifles......you can almost have the best of both worlds. The ugliness of a "New" Savage and the accuracy of an "old" Remignton it called a 788 but they didn't make it in a 300 wsm.

P.S. For what it's worth 99.9% of those Benchrest guys shot 700's or a variant of it.

SAVAGE 100% is the choice I would make.

Yeah Savage has come a long ways from what they used to be. There was a time I remember when Savages were not a real great option at all. But now the price and what you get for is can not be beaten

While they did go bankrupt it is important to realize this is the reason they have changed. They made the approriate changes people wanted to see and have come back to the force they are now. As a business owner this is part of business, stumbling and falling does help bread realization and changes must occur or your business will be no more. They are still here.
