I shoot/carry a semi auto 270 cut down to 18 1/2". I'm a still hunter/tracker when I can be. I usually used a 150 gr RN bullet. I used 130 gr PSP's but was unimpressed at close range. I'm trying out NBT this year...a little nervous for close quarters, but we'll see.
I use a bolt gun when sitting where a 200+ yard shot is possible.
I think any common deer caliber will work for close range if the right bullet is chosen. I want something compact though, with fast follow up shots. Bolt actions aren't really "fast" enough for most of my big woods hunting.
In MI, most shoot a 270, 06, 30-30 lever action, 308....in the woods.
