Show us your custom knives?

mikegranger,

Randall is proud of their knives, that's for sure. I honestly think that one of the best deal's going right now are knives made by Gene Ingram. His prices are very reasonable, he is an hell of nice guy to talk to as well. His wait times have really shot up the last year or so. The 2 pictured above were ordered this time last year and I waited ~6 months for them. I have 8 more on order from him strung out over the next year and half. His current wait times are pushing up into the begining of 2010....His prices are really not bad at all and he builds a heck of a knife. After deer season ends (grin) I would be willing to send you one of my Ingram's to play around with and check out for yourself. If you are interested you might as well call him now and get yourself in the book's for a knife, you will have ample time to figure out exactly what you want.

Funny you should mention Ingram. I like your water buffalo handled knife. Hey, why don't you just send it this way and I'll skin 50 or so coyotes with it to see how it holds up. Sometime in March I'll send it back with a well worn blade. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PM me your address, and I will let you know when I ship it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I wasn't kidding.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have 4 D"Holders and use them all the time . I don't by stuff just to look at it. They are very good knives, I don't no how to do pic.

I know this doesn't compare, but a nice knife for those of us who cant afford better. you might even call it a semi custom?
This is a knife made by spyderco and designed by Bill Moran. VG-10 stainless.

crapshoot that spyderco looks good too. How is the VG10 for edge retention and sharpening? I would like to try a Kydex sheath, even though I appreciate a good leather sheaths looks and sound deadening. I did bend a Knives of Alaska this year in the leather sheath at a bad time. KoA also offers a folder in VG10.

So far so good. I don't do much skinning though. It has a fine edge that sharpens easily, but also dulls easily when working on bone.

Lance,
That's called a "collaboration" between a factory and a custom maker who designed the knife and allows the factory to produce it as a partnership. The Spydie Moran's were pretty good working knives if the grip fit your hand. Seems it did fit most peoples hands, sadly, not mine. You'll like the VG-10 blade. Spyderco and Fallkniven both make use of this great Japanese blade steel and IMHO it makes for a wonderful blade. VG-10 is a very fine grained steel and is capable of an extremely fine edge. This is a steel to show off your sharpening skills with because it will get absolutely hair poppin' scary sharp! When properly heat treated (same for all blade steels) VG-10 holds an edge pretty well and is surprisingly easy to touch up. I'd like to see more of it in the knife world.

A couple of non-custom knives to give a look would be the Fallniven offerings and the Helle brand Scandanavian blades. The Swedish Fallniven knives are great knives, though lately the price of these knives has taken a jump. Some of them are as pricey as a good custom by a well known and respected custom knife maker. Doesn't mean they aren't worth it exactly. However, the best bang for the buck is probably the Helle knives. At well under a C-note for nearly any of their knives you will get a really, really, good cutting blade of old world design and in some cases even materials.

Just as some others have mentioned their favorite makers, I would give Bob Dozier's knives a real hard look if I were interested in a custom knife for using hard and hanging on to its value. Simply superb... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Lance,

I have that same knife, I really like it for skinning coyotes.

You're supposed to stay off the bone silly.....if you can!

CDenton,
I googled DHolders and was flabbergasted at how nice his knives are. I'm like you though, don't have any safe queen guns and really don't plan on just looking at a knife. I really can't imagine NOT sharpening them and cutting open a few things. Of course, not being a collector of nothing much but bills, I don't understand the mindset of buying something and watching it go up in value having never used it. Isn't that what the stock markets for? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well Mike I need to come clean on this one D"Holder is my father-in -law but it makes him just cringe when I take one of his knives to the steel. Hell that half the fun and then get blood stains on it. Its all good.

Mike-
I thought I would share the little I know about Randall knives..note I say little. I think the main draw apart from making a real nice knife is that Randall, Bo I think started making knives before WWII and his military style knives really took off. Alot of guys have a soft place in there heart for the knives like some of these that men of that generation carried into combat. Randall does make some nice hunting and skinning knives too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif The waiting list is so long now you would really have to be patient for a new one. Order now and delivery scheduled for 2012! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Although I like the Randall made knives I don't think they would be my first choice for a hunting knife or coyote skinner etc. I value my Randall because it was my fathers and it is a heck of a heavy duty knife but not a hunting knife unless your hunting bad guys. Did you get your new knives yet? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

gamedog-
Those are some nice knives! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Ruana is right over in Bonner just down the road a piece. I know lots of guys around here who really like those. Greg

My picture doesn't do them justice, but here's a couple of mine from a local maker here in Utah. Both have buffalo horn handles and are scary sharp!

That Barry knife is a very clean, smooth, classic Loveless design. Very nicely executed.
