Show us your custom knives?

Mine doesn't stack up very well with some of the cutoms shown here. I made this one. 440C stainless blade. Nickle Silver fittings. Micarta handle.

This little skinner just showed up last week. It was made by a gentleman named Gerald VanBuren, he said he makes a few knives as a hobby and has just started making knives for other people to try and pay for some of his supplies and to get more practice. He does a pretty good job and his price that he quoted me, when I described to him what I wanted, made me feel a little guilty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

He gets his steel from high carbon street cutting saw blades...I don't know what he does to them after that, He said it tests out at about 59 on the RC scale when he is finished with them. Other than that, I don't really know.

The new knives came in while I was away fighting fires. Only got two as the 3rd knife was sent back.

The top knife is a nice little skinner made by J. Rossi out of Argentina. It fits the hand and should make a great coyote skinner.

The bottom is an Abbott knife made with D2 steel and Ivory handles. It's an older knife (1992) but newer than my Uncle Henry! Don't know if I'll be skinning too many coyotes with it but couldn't turn down a good deal.

Now that I have the knife bug, I'm looking at lots of makers and planning a few more purchases. Besides, with the price of gasoline at almost $3.50 per gallon, I can purchase a really good knife for the cost of a tank of gas! How's that for a justification!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And, the knife will last forever!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I got the bug too Mike! I like those that you picked up. I got one ordered but will be a little while before I see it. Hope your doing well over there in Central Montana! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Greg

I went by a local knifemaker this weekend, and spent a few hours talking shop with him. I left throughly impressed.

I laughed when he said he would never sell a knife to a collector. I have a lot of knives, but I could not consider myself a collector. All of mine get used.

I'm with you on that, all mine get used or else they gotta go. I sold an L.L. Bean Stag handled trapper recently because I knew I wouldn't bloody a $450.00 folder. Bob Dozier would much rather have his knives used than be "safe queens." I try to oblige by getting them bloody as much as possible!

Here are the pictures from the knives I got from the knifemaker that I met with the other day.

This one is of the two knives he is letting me buy from him. Maple, Osage Orange, and Rosewood Handles.
